Agents of Socialization include, family, schools, peers and media. Family serves as the basis in developing attitudes and behaviors. There are many families of multiple backgrounds and during high school I came from a low income family whom didn’t see interaction as important. My parents often kept to themselves and my siblings were the only people I really talked to. I made friends with other peers who also came from low income families and we found activities to do together such as playing card games or hanging out at restaurants. We were displaying anticipatory socialization because we were all seeking things in common like video games, music or sports. Anticipatory socialization is “learning that helps a person achieve a desired position” (Macionis). I was trying to learn different types of heavy metal bands my friends were into and also joining into their activities such as free running. I did not have many hobbies myself other than playing video games so this kept me busy. My peers helped shaped me for who I am today. I had some good influences and bad influences from the peers I associated myself with. Many teens in my high school tended to …show more content…
Sometimes I feel as if I’m experiencing a culture shock, but at the same time, it’s something I’ve been used to for years. I know when I was in high school, I was always into the technological media and had my own email set up, computer and owned a phone. People thought I was a geek and nerd back then, but now today it’s seen as completely normal. I feel like I fit in with this generation of adults better and my life is definitely in better shape now that I’ve had the chance to see how other families interact with each other. My peers are definitely the reason why I decided to go back college because without peers, I would never had seen what kind of opportunities exist outside of the bubble that was created around me because of my
Socialization is the term used to refer to the process of inheriting and circulating norms, customs and ideologies, providing an individual with the skills and habits necessary for participating within his or her own society. Socialization is in short the means by which social and cultural continuity is gotten. Ricky and Lafayette and four other boys make up their own gang called the four corner hustlers. (218) the environment in which the boys live in is starting to influence their lives because they feel they have to survive, and joining gangs would help them blend in.
As a teenager we are all looking to be accepted by our peers and will do whatever it is they want us to so we can be accepted. That is to say the feeling of needing to be accepted by ones peers is done consciously; the person starts to do what their friends do without thinking about it. (Teen 3) In fact, teens are more likely to be affected by peer pressure because they are trying to figure out who they are. (How 1) Therefore, they see themselves as how their peers would view them so they change to fit their peer’s expectations. (How 1) Secondly, the feeling of needing to rebel and be someone that isn’t who their parents are trying to make them be affects them. (Teen 2) Thus, parents are relied on less and teens are more likely to go to their peers about their problems and what choices to make. (How 1) Also, their brains are not fully matured and teens are less likely to think through their choices thoroughly before doing it. (Teen 6) Lastly, how a child is treated by his peers can affect how they treat others; this can lead them into bullying others who are different. (Teen 3) Consequently this can affect a teen into doing something good or bad; it depends who you surround yourself with.
Identification with a peer group is a critical part of growing up because even though there is a mix between valuable and invaluable points, no one wants to be left with nobody to help them figure out how they fit in the world and get pass tough times. Peer pressure can have positive impacts and not so good but the postive are too valuable to overpass, leaning us over to conclude that classifying with a circle of close friends are a key factor when going into the real
According to Pascale, socialization is essential to the integration of new members into an organization (P 27). However, it is up to the organization to create an environment that offers both new and established members order and consistency through explicit procedures and implicit social controls (P 34). Furthermore, by providing organizational members with continuity and clarity, the firm is able to establish a strong cohesive culture that empowers its employees so that they may develop the social currency they need to implement change and execute tasks efficiently (P 35). It is this strong cohesive culture that has sustained some organizations over numerous generations (P 29); and it is this culture that Pascale’s seven step model of socialization is intended to cultivate (P 34).
Socialization is a lifelong process of acquiring one’s personal identity; when we interact within the four agents of socialization—family, school, media, and peer groups—we internalize norms, values, behavior, and social skills. Since our values, norms, and beliefs about society are first learned with family, family is the most important and influential agent of socialization.
The education system and the peer group within the school system are important socialisation agents in an individual’s life. Children from an early age absorb the values, attitudes and beliefs of the society in which they participate (Ashman & Elkins, 2009).
When I began college I had a small group of friends, but when I was trying to introduce myself to new people it came as a surprise to them that my parents did not attend college. After the conversations ended, I felt uncomfortable with how to act or think because I had a feeling of misplacement when talking with my fellow peers. As a byproduct of the change in college culture, it will create a “friendlier” environment for the first generation. Students need to feel safe, rather than out of place.
Teachers and peers Teachers played a huge role in my development because I started preschool at the age of two, so I spent a lot of time in some sort of classroom setting and interacted with the teachers. When I was younger a lot of times I preferred to be around the teachers, mostly because being an only child at the time, that was all I was used to. There were times when I did interact with my peers. Most of the time I spent was with my cousin because we had the same class. Once I was old enough to start kindergarten I was confident that it was going to be a cake walk. I met a group of friends and was excelling in class. However, my friends and I had a very hard time getting along, so we were later separated. Throughout my childhood I recall bouncing between several different types of friend groups, from the “cool clique”, to the
A system in which people interact with others for personal or commercial purposes can be defined as Socialization.
General socialization begins in childhood with our parents and grandparents or caretakers. Simple verbal and nonverbal interactions taking place between those closest to us and our world around us creates ideas and beliefs and coach us in how we should react to our environment. General socialization can be seen when children are punished for being inappropriate or impolite, or when their behaviors are reinforced by authority figures around them. Growing up in a conservative home, one may ...
The term socialization refers to the “lifelong social experience by which individuals develop their human potential and learn culture.” [Macionis et al. p 55] The concept of socialization is that our actions are driven/learned by culture. Socialization is also the foundation of personality, which we build by internalizing our surroundings. Through the lifelong process of socialization, society transmits culture from one generation to the next.
Although I am only sixteen years old and in the eleventh grade of high school, many things have influenced me and caused me to be the person that I am today. I hope that these things will continue to help me be a better person and influence me as my life continues. Some of the things that have influenced me have been church, my family, my friends, and school.
An example of how peers can have more influence then parents from my own life who be when I was in middle school, at the time I was hangout with girls who were not a good influence on me, I know this know but at the time I thought my parents were not wanting me to have friends. Those friends would always be late to school and class, at this school we had seven different classes and had five minutes to get to each c...
In the social development theory,( Leo Vygotsky primarily) explains that socialization affects the learning process in an individual. It tries to explain consciousness or awareness as the result of socialization. This means that when we talk to our peers or adults, we talk to them for the sake of communication.
Socialization is the process of passing down norms, customs, and ideologies that are important to the society by the previous generations to the younger generations. The school system is a social agency that was created to enhance the processes of socialization through education. The importance of school as an agent of socialization can be best explained by the amount of time students spend in school and in activities happen around school. The manifest functions of school are to educate students the social norms, and the knowledge and skills that help them become economically productive in order to benefit the society. But students not only learn from the academic curriculum but they also benefit from socialize with their teachers and peers.
