Anthony Kevin "Tony" Dungy (born October 6, 1955) is a former professional American football player and coach in the National Football League (NFL). Dungy was head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001, and head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 to 2008. Tony dungy became the first African American head coach to win the super bowl when his Colts crushed the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Dungy set another NFL record for successive playoff appearances by a head coach in 2008 in the wake of securing his tenth straight playoff appearance with a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Dungy reported his retirement as coach of the Indianapolis Colts on January 12, 2009 after the Colts' unfortunate loss in the playoffs. The …show more content…
Colts made it to the playoffs in each season they were coached by Dungy. Since retirement, Dungy has filled in as an analyst on NBC's Football Night in America. After playing quarterback in college for the University of Minnesota, Dungy went undrafted in 1977 and was marked as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League as a safety.
He played as a defensive reserve and special team for the Steelers in 1977 and the Super Bowl champion 1978 season, he leads the team in interceptions in the latter season. In 1979, Dungy was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, at that point completed his career a year later at a New York Giants training camp in 1980. Dungy is the latest NFL player to intercept a pass and throw a interception in the same game. Dungy was the emergency backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 1977 game against the Houston Oilers when both Terry Bradshaw and Mike Kruczek went down with serious injuries on October 9, …show more content…
1977. Dungy has one Super Bowl title as a player, as he played with the Steelers when they won Super Bowl XIII. After his time in the NFL as a player, Dungy was invited to become an assistant coach for his alma mater, the University of Minnesota in 1980.
After one season as a defensive backs coach, he was asked to come back to the NFL, this time as a coach. He was employed as an assistant by Steelers head coach Chuck Noll, his previous head coach from his playing days with the team, in 1981. His work under Noll place Dungy in the Sid Gillman coaching tree. In 1982, he was named defensive backfield coach, and was promoted in 1984 to defensive coordinator. He left the Steelers in 1989 to end up becoming the defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, and took over the defensive coordinator position for the Minnesota Vikings under Dennis Green in 1992. While at Minnesota, Dungy's defense was ranked number first in the NFL. Dungy accomplished his dream of being a NFL head coach when he was employed by Rich McKay to change the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team at that time surely understood for its lack of achievement, on January 22, 1996. Dungy introduced his form of the Cover 2 defensive with his defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin with a few new tweaks here and there. The outcome was the now-celebrated Tampa 2, however Dungy openly let it be known depended on ideas he had grabbed from his days in
Pittsburgh. On January 22, 2002, Dungy was hired on as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, a team that at the time was exceptionally intense on offense, yet extremely weak on defense. He introduced his "Tampa 2" defense quickly and kept on retooling the Colts' defense to his liking during his tenure. In the wake of joining the Colts, Dungy left the powerful offense introduced by Jim Mora, in both playing style and in staff, essentially unaltered. Dungy was brought together with Tom Moore, who was held the title as offensive coordinator. Moore and Dungy had previously coached together at Minnesota and Pittsburgh. During his early years in Indianapolis, Dungy had trouble trying to fix the Colts' defense and had blended outcomes in the postseason. In his first season at Indianapolis, the Colts were blown out 41–0 by the New York Jets in a first-round playoff game, and the team lost postseason games to the New England Patriots in both 2003 (in the AFC title game) and 2004 (in the second round of the playoffs). Dungy signed a three-year contract expansion in October 2005 for US$5 million per year. The Colts concentrated on defensive improvements during the 2005 offseason, signing five-year defensive tackle Corey Simon. Broadly anticipated that he would be a Super Bowl contender, the Colts won their initial 13 games, provoking much theory about the likelihood of the Colts turning into the NFL's first team to finish the season undefeated since the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Their thirteenth win ensured the Colts home field advantage all through the playoffs. With nothing to play for aside from the opportunity to go unbeaten, the Colts lost their fourteenth game to the San Diego Chargers. The Colts played their starters sparingly in the last two games. The Colts lost in their first playoff game to the soon to be Super Bowl champions the Pittsburgh Steelers. This misfortune made the Colts the first team to ever begin a season 13–0 and not make it to the Super Bowl. On February 4, 2007, Dungy and the Colts won Super Bowl XLI 29–17 over the Bears at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. On December 23, 2007, with a win upon the Houston Texans, Dungy won his 72nd NFL game as Colts head coach, passing Don Shula to wind up being noticeably the winningest coach in franchise history. During the 2008 season, the Colts won 12 normal season games, including their last nine straight, securing a wildcard shot, but were upset 23–17 in overtime by the San Diego Chargers in the wildcard round of the 2008–09 NFL playoffs. On January 12, 2009, Jim Caldwell who'd been assistant coach for the Colts was picked as the new head coach for the Indianapolis Colts subsequent to being named Dungy's future successor a year prior. On November 1, 2010, the Colts added Tony Dungy's name to the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor located on the center balcony on the east side of Lucas Oil Stadium. In June 2009, NBC Sports hired on Dungy to fill in as a studio color expert on the system's week after week Sunday Night Football pregame show, Football Night in America. Dungy's career has incorporated a few remarkable firsts. Among them, Dungy is the first NFL head coach to defeat each of the 32 NFL teams. He was the youngest assistant coach at age 25 and the youngest coordinator at age 28 in NFL history. Dungy was the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl (with the Colts' triumph over the Bears in 2007). He was the third African American head coach to win a professional football title in North America, behind Darren Arbet of the San Jose Sabercats. Dungy stresses that coaches are basically teachers who put faith and family in front of football and don't deprecate their players or shout at them. Likewise, as Dungy, they try to avoid panicking when things go severely. They control rather than drive, and Lovie Smith found that maybe the most enlightening thing of all. Smith said, “We talked about how to do it, being a teacher instead of screaming and yelling, all that stuff.” Smith also said: “I think as you look to young coaches coming up in the ranks, a lot of us have a picture of how a coach is supposed to be, how he is supposed to act...And I think what Tony Dungy showed me is you don't have to act that way.” Dungy said: “I really wanted to show people you can win all kinds of ways. I always coached the way I've wanted to be coached. I know Lovie has done the same thing. For guys to have success where it maybe goes against the grain, against the culture.... I know I probably didn't get a couple of jobs in my career because people could not see my personality or the way I was going to do it.... For your faith to be more important than your job, for your family to be more important than that job.... We all know that's the way it should be, but we're afraid to say that sometimes. Lovie's not afraid to say it and I'm not afraid to say it”
Ever since that day he has been a quarterback after his dad put him as one, and scored 4
In 1972, he had a Passer Rating of 157.5 in a game. A rare perfect rating would be 158.3. In 1973, he had an amazing season where he brought the Broncos to their first ever winning season. That season he earned a First Team All-AFC, led the AFC in touchdown passes, and earned the Broncos offensive MVP. In 1974, he led the NFL in yards per pass attempt with 8.1 yards. In 1975, he played his final season and retired. He became the Broncos quarterback coach for the 1976 season, then retired from that right after. In 1977, the Broncos went to their first super bowl, the year after Charley Johnson retired. He ranks 7th in most touchdowns by a Broncos quarterback, and 9th in most yards. In 1986, Charley Johnson was inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame.
Paul Tagliabue was appointed the NFL's commissioner in 1989 succeeding Pete Rozelle. Many believed Pete Rozelle to be the standard of measure when considering a new commissioner. Pete Rozelle was believed to have had the vision and leadership to guide the NFL to a new level. Paul took over the NFL just as it concluded a decade of two work stoppages and the embarrassing "scab football". NFL owners began leaving their traditional franchise homes in search of newer stadiums and bigger pay markets. Paul was viewed as being out of touch because of his reactive nature, management-by-crisis style, inability to form cohesion among team owners, and his faulty public relations skills (Greenfield).

Did you know that Joe Montana grew up in a town where many other great quarterbacks grew up for example Dan Darino and become one of the best to ever play. Joe had a amazing life he won many awards and become very famous over the years. He has a beautiful wife and two kids. Joe montana is one of the greatest football players to ever play.
He made his coaching debut on October 5, 2005. Just three short days later, he recorded his first win as a coach when his team took down the Minnesota Wild. Gretzky then took a step back from the game he loved to be with his ill mother who passed away on December 19th. He then jumped right back into the hockey world just 9 days later after his mother’s passing. With the knowledge Gretzky was able to give his Coyotes during the 2005-2006 season, they were able to improve and win 16 more games than their previous season with a different head coach.
After his senior year he was already getting ready for the NFL. It was time for the NFL combine, (which is like a training camp for former College Football players to see how skilled they are and what team will want them). During the NFL combine Payton was lighting up the sky, he was impressing many coaches, that almost every single team in the NFL wanted him. So after the combine he met with Chicago Bears head coach, Mike Ditka.
Every person ever associated with football knows how the game is played. They know every rule, play, stat, and anything else that can be recorded. There was a certain one of these people, though, that stood out from the rest. This was a man by the name of Vince Lombardi. Most people generally know who Vince Lombardi was. They know him as the former, and most famous, coach of the Green Bay Packers back in the late fifties and early sixties. They also recognize him as the man the trophy awarded to the Super Bowl winner, the Lombardi Trophy, is named after. This is all common knowledge in the football world. Do any of these people know who Vince really was? Do they know what he did to the game of football? Do they know that he changed the game, forever? Not many can actually say they know what Vince Lombardi did to the game of football that left a lasting impression. There can be arguments made of other coaches that have made great lasting impressions in football. Some names including: Bud Grant, Mike Ditka, and Don Shula. If you look more in depth at this though, they haven’t left that big of a lasting impression of the game. None of them really changed the way the game of football is played. None of them did like Vince Lombardi. He was the first to truly take risks to change the game of football. Through hard work, dedication, and an understanding of the game, Vince Lombardi was truly the most influential person in footballs history.
Coaching any sport is much harder than it seems. There are some jobs that almost anyone with the right education can do. Coaching is definitely not one of those jobs. One can get educated on drawing X's and O's on a paper for decades and still might be far from being a successful coach. Of course knowledge of the sport is very important too but to be successful in a job like coaching, one has to dedicate himself to his job; his job has to be his life. This is the major reason even those who hate Patriots still respect Bill Belichick and agree that he had unique abilities that make him so successful. His exceptional intelligence, his ability to break down and exploit game film, his singular discipline and his almost unmatched work ethic makes him probably the best coach in the NFL today and even one of the best in the history of the NFL.
Jackie Robinson once said that “"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." (Brainy Quotes). Jackie Robinson faced more abuse than any other baseball player. Jackie Robinson had his mind set on breaking the color barrier for African Americans. Jackie Robinson had the muscle strength and talent to inspire and change the color barrier in Major League baseball. Jackie Robinson was one of the most significant baseball players that America has ever known for Jackie Robinson’s bravery to stop the color barrier for, his inspiration he gave to people all around the world and for his accomplishments during baseball and outside of baseball this made him one of the most valuable players in the National League.
Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Bonds, Ozzie Smith, and Tony Gwynn; What do they all have in common? They are all some of the most famous African-American baseball players to ever play in the Major Leagues. One man, though, made it possible for all of them to play in the Major Leagues. That man’s name is Jackie Robinson. Although Jackie Robinson faced many adversities throughout his lifetime, he persevered and became the first African-American in Major League Baseball, breaking the color barrier and changing the world of baseball forever.
On March 24, 1976, Peyton was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Archie and Olivia Manning. He was the second of three boys. Cooper and Eli are his siblings. Peyton developed his skills from watching his dad play for the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings. In 1991, Peyton became the starting quarterback for Isidore Newman High in New Orleans where he felt comfortable playing with Cooper, the top receiver. After being recruited by several different colleges, Peyton chose the Tennessee Volunteers. Under Peyton’s leadership, the volunteers steadily climbed to a high national ranking. Also while playing for Tennessee Peyton set forty-two conference, school, and NCAA records. Although he was finished in three years and was expected to turn pro, he chose to stay with Tennessee one more year. In his last year with the Volunteers he led them to the National Championship in the Orange Bowl. The following year Peyton, the number one overall NFL draft pick, became the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts.
“I'm a pretty good winner. I'm a terrible loser, and I rub it in pretty good when I win”-Tom Brady (brainyquote.com). Tom Brady is the New England Patriots starting quarterback, and without a doubt he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. In fact without him the Patriots would have never even went to a Super Bowl. Now that the Patriots have the legendary Tom Brady on their team they went to six Super Bowls and even won four. However Tom Brady wasn't always as good as he is now he started from the bottom like everyone else.
