Death is a very sad concept in any form of literature. Wilfred Owen’s poem Anthem for Doomed Youth pulls the reader into these feelings of depression resulting from the loss of a loved one. From the beginning to the end of the poem, Owen skillfully uses metaphors, imagery, and other literary devices to describe and narrate the story of young men of arms lost forever. Owen uses Anthem for Doomed Youth to express the hardships and emotional trauma experienced by soldiers and their families during times of war.
Looking at the title right away we know this poem has to involve death and the death of young people. The word anthem had multiple meanings however, for this poem the word anthem represents the point of view or movement taken by the youth. The doomed youth is talking about the young solders who are being sent to war. The words, “passing bells” (Owen 1) pull the reader to think of death, or more specifically funerals. However, it is not a death of any man. It is the death of solider that is being expressed in this poem. We as the reader determine it is the death of a solider, because of the mentioning of guns, and rifles (Owen 2,3). The first three sentences are pulling us into a world of sadness, and we are becoming the people who have to witness and be part of this death. In stanza one we are talking about the brutal death that the solider faced and how we as the people are impacted by it. We are reading about how soldiers are being put in the battlefield and how the only noise they can hear is the sounds of guns. It saddens the readers to know that even during their last breaths the solders are not able to say their last prayers because every noise around them is flaring guns (Owen 3-4). The poem is an extended metaphor of a funeral where the poet looks at a typical funeral in a church and compares it with what would happen to a soldier killed in battle.
In conclusion this poem displays a look on the truth about war and its affect on the young soldiers who participate in it. Owen clearly displays the idea of negativity towards war. He believes that war only causes problems for the families. He does not think war is good especially since the young are not treated properly before and after their deaths. Through great imagery and literary devices Owen is able to take us into his perspective and show us how war has impacted the soldiers and the families of the young lost ones.
The deep complexity of its message is furthered by Olds’ use of metaphor. In describing the unburied corpses strewn about the cemetery, she notes a “hand reaching out / with no sign of peace, wanting to come back.” Through indirect metaphor, she is able to not only bring emotion to the stiffness of a frozen hand, but ponder a greater question—whether the “eternal rest” of death is peace at all. Despite the war, despite “the bread made of glue and sawdust,” and despite “the icy winter and the siege,” those passed still long for life. The fact that one side is praying for disaster to come on their enemies isn’t showing God’s love and at the end of the poem it says, “We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love.” It is out of love for their own soldiers but not for the soldiers on the other side. To summarize, Owen uses numerous literary techniques to illustrate his firsthand experience of World War One, and communicates his opinions with a distinguished use of metaphors, similes, personifications, themes, imagery and irony. Owen recognized that the high casualties and unnecessary deaths in World War One were all in fact a metaphor for all death in modern warfare; the well known ‘glory’ of dying for one’s country was simply a lie. Thanks to this, he was successful in making people realize that “The old lie: Dulce Et Decorum Est, Pro Patria Mori”, ‘It is sweet and right to die for one’s country’ is a terrible misunderstanding, and the poem it depicts an irony of death on the modern battlefield. No matter how noble the reasons may be, nothing but misery, heartbreak and agony can come from war.
‘Poetry can challenge the reader to think about the world in new ways.’ It provokes the readers to consider events, issues and people with revised understanding and perspectives. The poems Dulce Et Decorum Est (Wilfred Owen, 1917) and Suicide in the Trenches (Siegfried Sassoon, 1917), were composed during World War One and represented the poets’ point of views in regards to the glorification of war and encouraged readers to challenge their perspectives and reflect upon the real consequences behind the fabrications of the glory and pride of fighting for one’s nation.
The phrasing of this poem can be analyzed on many levels. Holistically, the poem moves the father through three types of emotions. More specifically, the first lines of the poem depict the father s deep sadness toward the death of his son. The line Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy creates a mental picture in my mind (Line 1). I see the father standing over the coffin in his blackest of outfits with sunglasses shading his eyes from the sun because even the sun is too bright for his day of mourning. The most beautiful scarlet rose from his garden is gripped tightly in his right hand as tears cascade down his face and strike the earth with a splash that echoes like a scream in a cave, piercing the ears of those gathered there to mourn the death of his son.

Consequently, Owen conveys so many deep emotions to the reader that it feels as if one is really in the battle. The reader would be overwhelmed with the detailed descriptions of the war and about its pain and destruction that it has caused. On the other hand, the reader would have felt that Brookes poem was shallow and bias.
The title ‘Anthem of Doomed Youth’, is juxtaposed to its real meaning of anthem being something to celebrate and be proud of. The assonance between the ‘Doomed’ and collective noun ‘Youth’ can come as a shock to society as topic of death and youth do not go together. In other words, the soldiers are too young and are already fated to death by enlisting in the war. This highlights how war is cruel as the soldiers are stolen of their youth, entering a battlefield designed to ‘sapt the soldier 's spirit.’ Furthermore, Owen shows that the fallen soldiers themselves will not get a proper burial of “candles,” “pall,” nor “flowers.” Instead, these are substituted with negative imagery “The pallor of girls’ brows” and personification “patient minds” to demonstrate that the thoughts of the ones waiting for the fallen soldiers back home are the closest thing they will have to a funeral. This is epitomised in the personification “bugles calling them from sad shires,” which conveys a nation in mourning back home. Owen’s poem uses symbolism to bring home the harsh reality of war the speaker has experienced and forces the reader to think about the reality presented in romanticized poetry that treats war gently. He utilizes language that imparts the speakers experiences, as well as what he, his companions, and the dying man feels. People really die and suffer and live through nightmares during a war; Owen forcefully demonstrates this in “Dulce et Decorum Est”. He examines the horrific quality of World War I and transports the reader into the intense imagery of the emotion and experience of the speaker.
In both the poems he shows and discusses death in warfare and its effects, which are far reaching. In “Dulce et Decorum est” the point of death is shown in a real light, Owens uses strong imagery to connect us to these soldiers and their plight for survival in World War I. I think the line that shows the reader this aspect is, “He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning” (16). Owens paints the graphic scene of a dying soldier during a gas raid. Owens deliberately makes the scene graphic in order to gain the reader’s attention, and keep them reading. In “Anthem for Doomed Youth,” Owens never brings up the word war or the name of any country in particular; he does this so that every war can be applicable to the poem. Owens also does this so that the topic that all wars are horrible comes into play. He personally takes the stance, that we as humans have not done anything to change the fate of the dying soldiers and he expounds upon it. “No mockeries now for them, no prayers nor bells; / Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs, – / The shrill demented choirs of wailing shells.” (5-7) In this line Owens talks about how these boys/men have no proper ceremony for their death. His first stanza highlights the wastefulness of war (deaths of young soldiers) while the second stanza, the mourning for the dead. His sarcastic and later quiet tone reinforce the stark contrast between the different aspects of war.
