While F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel "The Great Gatsby" encapsulates the spirit, excitement, and violence of ‘the Jazz Age’ and Robert Browning’s poem "My Last Duchess" reveals the political, social and domestic power wielded by Ferrara (the Duke), it is apparent by juxtaposing the characters of Tom Buchanan and Ferrara that even decades apart there has been very negligible changes in the behaviour of men in a patriarchal society. Despite the fact that Tom and Ferrara are from different time, they share similar characters, as for evidence, both are male chauvinist toward the women in their life, are supremacist about own self and finally both of them are insecure and self-centered. Ferrara is a powerful duke, who likes exercising his authority over everyone around him, especially his wife (the Duchess). He thinks that the time he spends with her is equal to the time he spends observing a piece of art. In fact, he even considers the duchess as one of his a valuable possession. Even when he looks at his dead wife’s painting he talks as if she herself is standing there as a mere object, “Looking as if she were alive. I call/ That piece a wonder, now; Frà Pandolf's hands/ Worked busily a day, and there she stands” (Browning 2-4). She is like a piece of art to him, a valuable object which he wants to manipulate. He considers her to be inferior and disapproves her behaviour and attitudes which he does not like. When describing what he likes about her he only talks about her breasts. Her presence, personality, behaviour nothing matters to him, “Sir, 't was all one! My favour at her breast,/ The dropping of the daylight in the West,” (Browning 25-26). The duchess was a pleasant woman, thanked anyone and smiled at everyone which the Duke did ... ... middle of paper ... ...Daisy. Tom and Ferrara are two common examples of antagonist people in the male dominated society. Not only they behave badly with women, but also do not restrain from hitting them. Tom and Ferrara presume themselves to be superior despite their unruly inferior thinking. Mentally they are so much crippled with their self-centered that unethical fatal decisions do not shake their core. By the character of Tom and Ferrara, both Fitzgerald and Robert Browning conveyed a message that this type of antagonist, unethical and unruly people will be present in any generation and any society. Gatsby and Greed In this day and age, money is a very important asset to have. One needs to have at least enough to live on, though great amounts are preferable. In The Great Gatsby, by Thomas F. Fitzgerald, having a large amount of money is not enough. It is also the way you acquire the money that matters.
In the 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the nature of man, and that, though characters may live complete opposite lives and be from different upbringings, even the most contrasting of people can have similarities. In the novel, the readers are introduced to two characters named Tom Buchanan and George Wilson. Tom Buchanan is introduced as an arrogant, wealthy east egg man who has never had to work for his money. George Wilson is introduced as a poor man, living in the Valley of Ashes, who owns an auto shop as a living. Although these men are in different social classes, if you were to strip these men of their wealth, they would have more similarities than differences. Fitzgerald shows through his writing that the nature of man is aggressive, contentious, and cowardly.
Tom Buchanan and George Wilson have plenty in common with their attitude pertaining towards women in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald throughout the entire novel gives the audience an insight on his thoughts about the nature of man. Fitzgerald portrays men often treating women harshly throughout his novel. For example, there are many violent acts towards women, a constant presence of dominance, and also ironically Tom and Georges over reactions to being cheated on.

Scott Fitzgerald, the morality of a society is clearly revealed through the choices and consequences its characters experience. The two societies within the novel, West Egg and East Egg, create an atmosphere of mixed ideals and morals, so completely opposite of each other. Three examples will be given to support the above thesis. Firstly, Jay Gatsby, arguably the main character, is involved in a number of criminal activities. Secondly, Tom and Daisy Buchanan, are a true symbol of how the morals of their society are revealed through their actions. Finally Nick Carraway, the narrator, is truly and innocent in a society gone mad. These three points will be elaborated below.

In the story “The Great Gatsby” by Fitzgerald the reader is told a story through the eyes of the narrator Nick. Nick has many friends and acquaintances in the story, but the most important being Gatsby and Tom. Throughout the story Gatsby’s characterization is made to make him look like the protagonist while Tom’s is to make him look like that antagonist. However, while we see the story through Nick’s eyes the reader is actually seeing the opposite. Nick agrees with Gatsby’s actions more than Tom’s which starts to create a bias. This makes it very easy for the reader to instantly dislike Tom’s character and side with Gatsby. However, the reader does not always think about the situation without the bias giving them an illusion of what is really happening. Even though Gatsby is the main character of the story his antagonistic actions are easily overseen. In the story, Gatsby is deemed the antagonist due to his intent of stealing Daisy from Tom.

Most are carefree and only care about themselves and their status. The novel focus’ on Jay Gatsby, a mysterious extravagantly rich man who throws blowout parties and lives in luxury in hopes of winning over his love, Daisy. Gatsby builds his life of from nothing, as the son of poor farmers from the west and then morphing himself into a New York millionaire. Only to be destroyed when Daisy kills her husbands mistress and Gatsby takes the blame for her; eventually leading to his murder. No one but a party goer nicknamed Owl Eyes and Gatsby’s live-in resident Klipspringer attends his funeral. All of Gatsby’s business partners and the thousands that came to his parties did not care enough to come to his funeral. Gatsby spent all his time focusing on one dream that he did not make connections and socialize with people that cared about him, but his parties. The lifestyle of the American Dream arguably became the only thing that people were chasing. Through the character of Owl Eyes, Fitzgerald shows the rise and fall of the American Dream and the consequences that come with it.
Money is the root of all evil, a statement from the bible, can be used to describe The Great Gatsby. The decision making of the characters differs usually based on their financial situation. It’s clear in the book that money decides everything directly and indirectly. Fitzgerald uses diction and characterization to emphasize how people behave based on their economic status. Through the book he wants us to experience the mistakes made by the characters and learn from them to better our lives and society in general.
