Critique The ANOVA system used in this study was a process of repeated measures analysis of variance. This study took place over three years. Yet Americans are demanding the restaurant business to change their menu to show nutritional values, and to add more healthy food choices. All the while the consumers are losing interest in eating healthy has been on the decline for twenty years. Yet statistical data shows a large increase in the amount of healthy food items bought, and a large decrease in side orders for the last three years. The main menu items bought stayed the same for the same period. The obesity rate is not confined to the United States alone. Canada, Sweden, England, but all developed countries are having increasing problems with obesity. This is probably due to underdeveloped countries don’t have very many fast food restaurants, or much money to spend at them. The majority (95%) of the people in this study think they can decide what they can, or cannot have to eat themselves. Almost three quarters (68%) of those people are tired of the “food police” telling them what they should be eating, and should not be eating. Zinczenko shares his personal story about how fast-food restaurants such as Taco Bell and McDonald’s led to a weight problem during his high-school years. He claims that the ease of accessibility and lack of healthy alternatives make it all too easy to fall into the cycle of unhealthy eating. Zinczenko also contends that the lack of nutrition labels on fast-food products leaves the consumer in the dark about what he or she is actually consuming. At the time Zinczenko wrote his article, fast-food restaurants were not willingly disclosing nutritional values of their products. Today this has changed. Fast-food companies, including McDonald’s, have put the full nutritional information of their products directly on the packaging and wrappers. All other fast-food establishments either post it on the menu board (Panera), offer easy access to pamphlets containing all nutritional information of their menu in store, or have it easily accessible online (Taco Bell, KFC). I am sure that this is a helpful step forward toward educating the public as to what they are consuming, but has this new knowledge to consumers had a dramatic change toward ending obesity? No. People have always known that eating a Big Mac and fries with the giant soft drinks that McDonald’s and other chains offer is not healthy; putting the nutritional labels on these items has done little to nothing to stop people from eating these high-calorie meals. Obesity is a global medical issue where people are confused between eating and dieting. I am an Omani student, and back in Oman, it has the same issue as the United States does. Both society try to stop their people from having obesity. However, “What You Eat is Your Business” written by Radely Balko explains how government allow unhealthy food to spread out over the country, and in return the government tries to push people to focus on health care systems where people may not be able to do it. Increased portion sizes have gone unnoticed by consumers unaware of their unhealthy actions and has become the trend because of its gradual incorporation in our eating habits. In just twenty years, significant differences among the sizes of products can be noticed and most often seen to have doubled(1). Not only are increasing portion sizes reaching dine-out style meals where hamburger, french-fry, and soda sizes are two to five times larger than originals, but they are making their way into the homes of our public. Recipes found in newer editions of Joy of Cooking, a popular home cookbook, shows fewer serving sizes coming from identical recipes of older editions. This can be explained to show that larger portion sizes are to be anticipated from the recipes.

As the obesity rate increases, the number of fast food restaurants goes up as well. Although it is not certain, many believe that obesity in the United States is correlated to eating fast food. Since the United States has the highest obesity rate out of any country, it is important for Americans to monitor the fast food industry that may be causing obesity. Obesity is an epidemic in America. Fast food can be compared to the same type of mindless addiction as cigarettes, and can be equally as dangerous. Best selling author of Eat This, Not That, David Zinczenko’s article “Don’t Blame the Eater,” blames the fast food industry for the growing rate of obesity in the United States. Zinczenko’s main idea is that fast food companies should have warning labels on all the food they supply. Zinczenko believes that since health labels are put on tobacco and preserved food product, fast food industries should put labels on today’s fast food. Discussions about the availability of fast food compared to healthier alternative were brought up as well. Zinczenko states that when looked at, a salad from a fast food restaurant could add up to half of someone’s daily calories (155). Obesity is weighing this country down. Fast food restaurants have become incredibly prominent and reliable throughout the United States. A commonly used excuse that America’s newfound obesity issue is due to the comparatively cheaper fast food to that of an organic meal is thought to be misconceived. Although it is true that fast food in fact is cheaper than purchasing an organic meal, there are healthier affordable alternatives than fast food. Nevertheless, the issue is, who is to blame? One of the main benefits of menu labeling is giving consumer’s information directly to help them understand what exactly they are consuming. The average calorie intake for consumers is 1,800 to 2,000 per day. Even though consumers may not feel like they are eating too much, sometimes over half of the recommended calories will be consumed in just one meal. Menu labeling will allow consumers to track their calorie intake if restaurants will have the calories displayed on their menu. ...omething to go. I found out that college student’s want foods that are quick, taste good, and cheap. The limitation to my research was that I only passed out ten surveys all at the cafeteria. Perhaps if I did more or passed them out at a different location I might have gotten different results. I also only interviewed two people, and a larger sample might have changed my results. Also only observing my roommates shopping might have limited me to what I always eat, other college students might buy healthier foods when they shop. Take a minute now and think about what you eat in an average day and see if you fall into the categories of eating unhealthy with the majority of college students. Next time you buy something to eat take a second and look what’s in it and think to yourself. Should I be eating this? Or is there something healthier that I could be eating?
