“Of all religious subjects, that of the Annunciation is closest to the artist as a Christian. The subject is described only by Luke, patron saint of painters, who was popularly believed to have been a master of their craft as well as a physician.”1
Flemish painting was founded in the Low Countries at the start of the fifteenth century. The Low Countries, consisting of what is now Belgium and Holland, as well as the provinces of Artois and Hainault, and the cities of Arras and Cambrai.2 “No other artists give quite the same sensation of being free to see, through a window of a picture frame, a vanished world preserved in all completeness, as a piece of amber preserves the fragile detail of an insect from centuries ago.”3
Though many artists and works of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are considered to be of Flemish origin, the reality is that artists, either due to intrigue with their area, or for economic reasons, chose to make their home or place of work in the region. Many of the more famous Flemish artists spent their childhood in Germany, France, or just outside of the Flemish territory. By paying or earning their way into these communities, artists became known as Flemish, and because so many talented people worked closely together, a similarity of style developed, thus we have the Flemish style of painting. Not one artist should be considered to be the greatest painter of the region because quite a few were able to distinguish themselves from the generic, and thus developed their ow individual ways of presenting their ideas.
The Annunciation is one of the most popular biblical scenes depicted in the early northern renaissance painting community. By focusing on this one particular scene, as painted by artists considered to be great at their craft in the Flemish region, either by birth or by employment, it is possible to note the individual style of each, and therefore, prove that not one of these artists should be considered the ‘best’.
Master Bertram, from Minden, in Westphalia, was the earliest documented painter for whom exist extant panels. The head of a large workshop, he settled in Hamburg from 1367-1415. In 1410, he was elected Deacon of the painter’s guild. During is career, he traveled to Rome to heighten his knowle...

At first glance, each of the paintings look simply like a nice scene, with no historical role at play behind it. Again, this could not be further from the truth. The third painting that Brook shows us, is “Young Woman Reading a Letter at an Open Window”. The key element in this painting is the dish of fruit beneath the woman. This dish was was painted when the Chinese porcelain was taking its place in the Dutch’s life. The first porcelain dish to reach Europe amazed everyone, because of the attention to detail, quality, and fanciness that it possessed. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to acquire this delicacy. From there, it went to south of China, where it was negotiated with Chinese wholesalers for more of this porcelain. The route that porcelain took was crucial to commerce worldwide, so the Dutch wanted to get into it. After this, porcelain only increased in popularity and expanded trade around the world and soon, the most successful emerging business was the porters of Delft. Porcelain dishes were more than just breathtaking. Brook, himself, points out that they were a symbol of the Dutch positive relation to the world outside and the overcoming of challenges. Without porcelain reaching its supreme popularity in Delft, many trade routes around the world would not have been
In the article “Conditions of Trade,” Michael Baxandall explains that fifteenth-century Italian art is a “deposit” resulting from the commercial interaction between the artist and the purchaser, who he refers to as a client. These works, as such, are “fossils of economic life,” and money, and they play an important role in the history of art. In our current perception of the relationship between the artist and art, “painters paint what they think is best, and then look around for a buyer” . However in the past, especially during the Renaissance period, the customers determined the content and form of paintings, as it was them who commissioned the work before it was created. He states that the artists and clients were interconnected and a legal agreement was drawn up specifying subject matter, payment scheme and the quality and quantity of colors, which would influence the artist’s painting style. Baxandall not only looks at the explanation of the style of painting that reflects a society, but also engages in the visual skills and habits that develop out of daily life. The author examines the situations between the painter and client within the commercial, religious, perceptual, and social institutions, centrally focusing on markets, materials, visual practices, and the concept of the Renaissance period, which saw art as an institution. Baxandall notes that Renaissance paintings also relate to the clients’ motives through such ways as possession, self-commemoration, civic consciousness, and self-advertisement. The author considers works of a wide variety of artistic painters, for instance, Filippo Lippi, Fra Angelico, Stefano di Giovanni, Sandro Botticelli, Luca Signorelli, and numerous others. He defines and exemplifies fiftee...

Two of the most extensively analyzed works of art are Diego Velasquez's Las Meninas and Jan Van Eyck's Arnolfini Double Portrait. Both of these artist's talent won them recognition not only during their lifetime but after as well. Both Velasquez and Van Eyck have a justly earned title as the most talented artists of their respective times. A detailed examination of the details and intricacies of these artist's respective masterpieces, their similarities, and what sets them apart not just from each other but from other paintings from their time period and style, will lead the viewer to a better understanding of the mentalities of these gifted artists and how they transcend their respective genres and contemporaries to create their own artistic identities.
Despite its non-Italian origins and because of its timing and specific achievements in the portrayal of the human form, emotions, and artistic balance, Jean Hey’s “Annunciation” can be considered a natural representative of the culmination of the transition from the learning process of the Early Renaissance to the perfect execution of the High Renaissance.
The compositions that each piece displays is different and prestige in its own right. Flemish panel painters were largely influential and created extraordinary developments in composition. The artwork tends to be very detailed and filled with symbolic meanings from surrounding objects or even coloring. Jan van Eyck was especially credited for paying exceptional attention to detail that creates such a realistic form, the figures seem lifelike. Much of this realistic appearance is due to the medium that was widely used in the North. The use of oil paints and techniques, such as finer detail with smaller brush strokes and layering of oil paints to create a glaze, were used and developed giving the Northern art distinct characteristics and composition. Italian painters created frescos by applying pigments to wet plaster. The result is a dull, flatter color and they were unable to achieve intricate detail. The com...
Social structure has shaped the characteristics and the aspirations of Melvin Affandy, an Indonesian studying in University of Washington. Sometimes people fail to see that the identity of a person is subjected to his/her societal background. This is the result of people not having a quality of mind (sociological imagination) which disconnects their understanding of the tight relationship between social structure and what the person has become. Hence, I am going to analyse my subject from his societal background. By doing an interview, I extracted a statement describing how he perceives himself. These statements, if analysed, indicates how the social structure around Melvin has impacted him this way. In this paper, I am going to discuss about
Women who have become pregnant should take the responsibility for their actions in becoming pregnant. This excludes the argument of “What if the woman was raped?” In the case of a rape, I still believe abortion is not the right way to handle the grief, guilt and depression that a woman may experience after finding out that she has become pregnant after being raped. To abort the baby won’t get rid of the pain a woman has been feeling as a result of the traumatic experience she had been through. I believe that aborting the baby will make things even more difficult. There is always the opportunity to give the child to a loving family who may not be able to conceive a child on their own. Abortion to me though, in my opinion, will always be wrong. I believe that the act of aborting an unborn baby is to be considered murder. I have many reasons as to why I feel this way. First, I believe that an unborn baby is still a human being and their life is as precious as anyone else’s life. Most women do not know they are pregnant as soon as their baby starts developing. 3-4 weeks, or as early as 18 days, after conception, a baby’s heart will start to beat. This to me means the baby is a living creature, a human being at that point. According the website beginbeforebirth.org, it is stated at about 17 weeks
The shift between the Middle Ages and Renaissance was documented in art for future generations. It is because of the changes in art during this time that art historians today understand the historical placement and the socio-economic, political, and religious changes of the time. Art is a visual interpretation of one’s beliefs and way of life; it is through the art from these periods that we today understand exactly what was taking place and why it was happening. These shifts did not happen overnight, but instead changed gradually though years and years of art, and it is through them that we have record of some of the most important changes of historic times.
In the article “Conditions of Trade,” Michael Baxandall explains the interaction serving of both fifteenth- century Italian painting and text on how the interpretation of social history from the style of pictures in a historical period, pre-eminently examine the early Renaissance painting. Baxandall looks not only on the explanation of how the style of painting is reflected in a society, but also engages in the visual skills and habits that develop out of daily life. The author examines the central focus on markets, material visual practices, and the concept of the Renaissance period overlooking art as an institution. He observes a Renaissance painting, which relate the experience of activities such as preaching, dancing, and assessing. The author considers discussions of a wide variety of artistic painters, for instance, Filippo Lippi, Fra Angelico, Stefano di Giovanni, Sandro Botticelli, Luca Signorelli, and numerous others. He defines and exemplifies concepts used in contemporary critic of the painting, and in the assembled basic equipment needed to discover the fifteenth- century art. Therefore this introductory to the fifteenth- century Italian painting and arise behind the social history, argues that the two are interconnected and that the conditions of the time helped shape the distinctive elements in the artists painting style. Through the institutional authorization Baxandall looks at integration in social, cultural and visual evaluation in a way that shows not only the visual art in social construction, but how it plays a major role in social orders in many ways, from interaction to larger social structural orders.
Also pro-choice people say “what if she was raped? Then it should be allowed.” Well these claims can be exposed. The claim that abortion will save the child from a life of abuse can be disproven by a 1973 report, in 1973 abortion became legal in the United States, there were 167,000 cases of child abuse and neglect reported. Yet in 1980 there were 785,100 cases - an increase of 370% from 1973. Then in 1987 there were 2,025,200 cases reported, which represents an increase of 1112%. A portion of this increase is due to better reporting, still experts agree that these figures reflect a real trend toward higher rates of abuse. Abortion didn’t help stop child abuse, the legalization of abortion has actually contributed to its extreme rise due to the emotional effects abortion has on women 's self-esteem and the ability to deal with stress. The other myth is that abortion is used mainly as a last resort, mostly for pregnancies that result from rape or incest. The Alan Guttmacher Institute did a study called "Why Women Have Abortions," women gave specific reasons why they had an abortion. The top three answers were the mother was unready for responsibility, can 't afford baby now, or concern about how having a baby would change her life. The three reasons which came in last place and were tied at 1 percent were, the mother was a victim of rape or incest. Husband or partner wanted the abortion. Didn 't want others to know she has had sex or is pregnant. Therefore, abortion is not mainly used as a last resort, but a form of birth
Abortion is unlike any other subject debated today; millions of women have aborted a child, and the loss, pain, and emotional need to justify what was done, both on the part of the mother and on the part of her loved ones. Abortion is a gut-wrenching debate that has been going on for centuries, and does not plan to cool off anytime soon. The Supreme Court case in 1973, Roe vs. Wade, placed abortion on the map for the United States. The result of the Roe vs. Wade case legalized abortion to protect women’s health, however the good intentions of the ruling opened the doors for people to take advantage of the case outcome. Approximately 1.06 million abortions took place in the United States in 2011, which goes to show that women maybe abusing the privilege of the rules set in place to protect their health and practicing abortion as a form of contraception. Abortion is not only a dangerous procedure for women to endure, however it is also unethical to abort a child. Abortion is immoral because life begins at conception, people need to live with the consequences and not take the easy way out, and there are other available options.

A baby’s heart beats at eighteen days, all organs function at eight weeks, and they can feel pain at ten weeks. Therefore, life begins at conception. If murder is illegal, abortion should be illegal as well. Since the legalization of abortion in 1973, over 56 million unborn children have been killed, more than the entire population of Spain. That is 155 babies per hour and about 1 every 24 seconds. Fay Wattleton said “I think we have deluded ourselves into believing that people don 't know that abortion is killing so any pretense that abortion is not killing is a signal of our ambivalence, a signal that we cannot say yes, it kills a fetus.” This is true because no matter what the circumstances of conception, no matter how far along in the pregnancy, abortion always ends the life of an individual human being. Everyone who has an abortion acknowledges this simple fact. It is understandable why women who are victims of rape or incest want an abortion, but that still doesn’t change the fact that they have a human being growing inside of them. David C. Reardon, Julie Makimaa, and Amy Sobie did two major studies of pregnant rape victims and found that three out of four of these women chose to give birth and did not regret their decision. Of the fourteen incest victims who carried their children to term, all were happy they had given birth. They also rejected abortion as a good option for incest related pregnancies
