Emotional Stability. Academic Success. Social Well-Being. These are three things that parents must consider when raising their children. In the story “Teenage Wasteland” written by Anne Taylor, a mother named Daisy Coble and a father named Matt Coble must decide how to straighten out their son. Out of desperation they turn to a tutor/psychologist named Cal. They later find that Cal isn’t the best and things take a turn for the worst. This leads me to say that parents should be strict with their children in hopes of them succeeding, all while maintaining a good emotional, academic, and social well-being for the child. In the story Teenage Wasteland the parents should have focused more on Donny’s emotional stability. It is clear Donny is emotionally …show more content…
Donny seems to be struggling in school, “but now they’ve slipped back. (pg.1305) this is evidence of his struggles. Grades are usually in direct correlation to emotional stability. Donny’s parents should have gotten him a real psychologist to help him with his mental stability and then they themselves should have helped him with his school work.
With that being said the tutor wasn’t all that bad. She did help him with his social life a bit. This is shown when “Donny began to talk endlessly on the phone with a girl named Miriam. (pg. 1305)” Earlier in the story it is revealed that Donny isn’t good with people. He struggled making friends but when he’s with Cal he makes a couple of friends. Donny is a troubled character and seems to be a lost cause but his parents could have done a better job parenting.
Parents should be strict with their children all while making sure they maintain a good emotional, academic, and social well-being for the child. This doesn’t mean nag, or constantly pester your child but be firm and make sure you get your point across. With proper discipline any child can sprout and become a good human in our society but it all comes down to how the child is raised. How will you raise your
Lanham is sure “would set this boy straight” (9). Through the child psychologist, Tyler portrays another adult who fails Donny when he should have helped. It is ironic that a trained professional tells the Cobles that Donny is simply being a teenager and that he “had no serious emotional problems. He was merely going through a difficult period in his life” (11). As a child psychologist, he should be aware that Donny may have some deep routed emotional problems which are causing him to act out and display poor behavior, and that this acting out is a cry for help, but instead he passes off the responsibility to another individual by recommending the tutor, Cal.
Personally, I think a good parent consists of the right amount of discipline and mutual respect. Authoritative parenting would be my ideal parenting style. I think this style makes a good parent because not only does your child respect you, your rules, and your boundaries, but you respect theirs too. Being able to simultaneously teach your child while also learning from them takes a lot of patience, but when it is done right, the child will be ideal to fit society’s standards when it comes to being a decent human being. The child will grow to be independent and strong, like any parent would
Every parent wishes the best for his/her child. All they want is for them to be the best they possibly can be, so they can grow up and have a successful career; one in which they can live a happy and comfortable life.
They're all Wasted! In today’s culture, teenagers tend to desire independence and isolation, rather than spending time with family. Anne Tyler’s “Teenage Wasteland,” centers around the chronicles of a neglectful mother attempting to reverse her child’s tendency to steer towards delinquency. This story, told in third-person limited omniscient, shows a teenager who is inept, and a parent who did too little, too late.
“Fortunately, children do not need “perfect” parents. They do need mothers and fathers who will think on their feet and who will be thoughtful about what they have done. They do need parents who can be flexible, and who can use a variety of approaches to discipline.” - James L. Hymes, Jr. this quote, I can say, is physically very true. If it wasn’t my father who was rigorous to...
There are certain characteristics necessary to being a good parent. A good must have patience and tolerance always especially when his child is overtired making him misbehave.
It can be said for most parents that they want their children to grow up to be successful contributing members of society. Being a parent is a difficult, yet rewarding task. But why do some types of parenting result in juvenile delinquency while others find success. There are four generally recognized parenting styles and are categorized: authoritarian, permissive, neglectful, and authoritative. This essay will break down the various styles, its type(s) of discipline and effectiveness.
This style of parenting is best described as the child having more control over the parent. There are a lot of parents today that seem to have no control of their child actions and even words. This in which can make the parents question what are they doing wrong when it comes to raising their child. This type of parent have very low demands and are highly responsive, maybe even too responsive to the child’s needs. Although these parents are very loving of their children they do not have many rules that their child should abide by (Cherry, K. 2017, para.1). Not setting ground rules gives the child the freedom to do whatever they want and know that they will not receive a harsh, if any punishment at all. Also, parents who are permissive tend to want to be their child’s best friend. The child in this parent in child relationship tends to have more control than the parent. If there are not any rules in place to be followed the child will eventually resort to negative behaviors, and may even be insure because of the low discipline from their parents (Cherry, K. 2017, para. 9). Permissive parents should give the child rules to follow and discipline them if broken, to ensure that their child follow the right path throughout
He does not want to do his work, and consistently puts it off for other things. He tells his parents every night,” He doesn’t have any homework or he did it all in study hall” (206). He is defiantly lien to his parents; because if he were telling the truth, he would not be failing his classes. He is unenergetic, and does not want to do the work in his school, so he chooses not to. Next, after Daisy stops asking Donny about his work. Donny’s grades worsen especially in one class. In history class, the teacher informs Daisy that,” [Donny’s] rose from a D to a C, but now they’ve slipped back, and they’re closer to an F” (210). In the end it is clear that Donny just does not want to work because he is too out of it. He rather practice doing the wrong thing; than actually doing something productive. In conclusion, Donny is just careless, it is obvious he can do the work, but he is just too lazy to do it. He is the only person, holding himself
Successful parenting may be judged by many different standards. Raising a child to be a respectful, mature, and independent adult requires a great deal of effort. There are several parenting styles, and not all lead a child to reaching their full potential. Overpowering sternness leads may lead to a rebellious child, while passive parenting may lead children to inept for the challenges of adulthood. Parenting requires more than teaching children submissiveness, or building of self-importance. Children learn best from a role model who is admirable. Parenting is a great opportunity to set the course of one’s entire life in the right direction.
Each parent is different; they all have different ways in parenting and disciplining their children. One’s own parenting style is usually derived from the way one was raised or the society one lives in. Parenting styles include authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive, and it is very important to know which style one falls in because it can have an effect on how one’s child grows up to be and develops. Authoritative parenting would be the better parenting style because it is in the middle of the parenting styles; it is not at the extreme ends of the spectrum. It can be very beneficial to parents to understand that how one raises their children can give them a foundation for good development for years to come.
Lastly discipline is another very important responsibility. The best thing to do is to pick your battles, because if you are constantly saying “no” your child will tune it out. You also have to be consistent. For example, you can’t let your child eat candy before dinner one night and then tell them not to the next night, you will be sending them mixed signals.
Character Education Programs One of the most important things to parents is that their child grows up to be a caring, healthy human being. Parents were actually asked what the most important thing they wanted for their children was. “The most common response, given by 48% of the parents, was making sure their child grows up to be a moral person.” http://www.joe.org/joe/1998april/a3.html. A good way to ensure this is by implementing character education programs.
As parents one only want the best for their children. Therefore, one sometimes tend to come off as strict parents. Parents that only want the best for their children try to teach them respect and mold them into bright, intelligent individuals. Nowadays, the way you appear and carry yourself if very important. Parents who do not let their child participate in some events only does this because one is looking out for their children. Parents are sometimes strict because, one does not want their child to stray away, one does not want their child to make the same mistakes as one did when one was younger, and to teach discipline.
Teenagers will probably develop into balanced and well-adjusted grown-ups if their parents are firm disciplinarians. Parents should supervise their children and take care of their actions but with limits because if parents have no mercy on their kids, their kids will typically do everything they can to get freedom which will include lying to parents about where they’re going, hiding secrets, concealing friends, and will generally make them get really used to being sneaky and rebellious. Also, as mentioned earlier, parents have a huge effect on their teenagers’ personalities which will surely make them more forceful and aggressive towards their peers at school, just like how their relationship with their parents work. So, the thought of strict parenting creates better-behaved children is definitely incorrect. It is clearly proved that it actually tends to create kids with lower self esteem who behave worse than different children - and in this manner get punished more! Strict child rearing really creates behavior problems in
