In the story “ The Diary of Anne Frank” there is a lot of conflict. One example of conflict in this story is person vs. person. Another example of conflict in this story is person vs. society. There is person vs. person in this story because it was Mr. Franks decision whether or not to go hide out in Mr. Frank’s factory with the Van Daans. “Yesterday Father told me we were going into hiding. Where, he wouldn’t say. At five o'clock this morning Mother woke me an told me to get dressed. I was to put on as many clothes as I could.” ( Goodrich & Hackett 703 & &04) Anne was told to put on as many clothes as she could because if they were to carry suitcases they would look suspicious. First, Anne Frank lived in Amsterdam, Netherlands and had to live in her father’s warehouse in a secret annex during the war to hide from the Nazis, who wanted to capture them for being Jewish. On the other hand, according to Wakatsuki and Houston, Jeanne lived in Long Beach, California and the United States government wanted her because she was Japanese. The government wanted the Japanese because Pearl Harbor recently had been bombed by Japan. Another difference is that Anne Frank was thirteen when she first went into hiding, while Jeanne was only seven when she got sent to an internment camp(Goodrich and Hackett and Wakatsuki and Houston). Next, their lives where they lived were very different. Anne Frank was not allowed to go outside and was not able to talk from eight in the morning to six at night. In her hiding spot Anne and her family did not have much food and were hungry at some points(Goodrich and Hackett). On the other hand, Jeanne was allowed to go outside and talk whenever she wanted. At the camp there was shortages of certain foods, such as sugar, but there was enough food most the time. But, when there was enough food it was not prepared well(Wakatsuki and Houston). The “Diary of Anne Frank” is a real diary written by Anne Frank, during the time of the Holocaust. She describes her days hiding in a secret annex with seven other people. Some days they got along and others they didn’t, but in the end they all respected each other. In the “Diary of Anne Frank,” Anne Frank says, “ I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.” This message serves as a theme throughout the diary. Throughout the diary, she explains how the people she spent her days with were good people at heart.
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live during World War 2? Life during World War 2 was torture if you were jewish, especially if you were a kid. Felix Salingar from Then by Morris Gleitzman and Anne Frank both knew what it was like. Their stories both describe the lives of jewish children hiding from the Nazis, in fear of being taken and killed. Throughout both of their stories, many character traits were discovered about them that show how they are similarly affected by the events in their stories. Anne Frank and Felix Salingar have many similarities, some of which stand out more than others.
After reading and watching The Diary of Anne Frank I realized there was many prominent differences and similarities from the script to the movie. One scene from the script was identical to the one in the movie, where they would become rigid and unmoving whenever the sounds of cars were heard. Furthermore, the scene repeated several times in a similar fashion throughout the movie. With this in mind, the director probably wanted the audience to know the dangerous position the Franks and the Van Daans were in. The characters know this as well, and this caused them to fear any noise.
Miep Gies wrote Anne Frank Remembered to honor the memory of the Frank family, to show what happened to Jews during World War II, and what she did to hide the Frank family. Gies was asked to write about her experience in the war, but Miep also wanted to consider how Anne Frank played such an enormous role in Miep’s life; Gies wanted to add the impact of how Anne’s diary affected people into her book. The book is the first-hand account of the persecution of Jews. Miep was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1909. Gies was five when the war started. In December of 1920, 10 years old, Miep was taken to Holland to be treated after almost dying from undernourishment because the Germans were taking food to support their army. The family she was taken to for treatment later adopted her. She grew up in Amsterdam with her adopted Dutch family. Miep was going to return home but her parents said she was Dutch and she remain so. When Miep was 24 she came to work at Travies and Company making jam. She married Henk Gies after she discovered she was going to be deported back to Vienna; Miep loved Henk. Hitler started to demoralize Jews and make them seem inhuman, they were the scum of the Earth. When Jews started to be relocated to camps those who could go went into hiding including the Frank family. The Frank family moved into a hidden section of the Travies and Company and hid there for years. Later, the Frank family was discovered by an anonymous tipster and taken to an internment camp. Character vs. self is important in the beginning of the Diary of Anne Frank because it shows what the characters are dealing with. In the story Anne has a difficult time deciding to sear her star or not. “It’s funny, I can’t throw mine away. I don’t know why.”(Goodrich & Hackett pg.709). Therefore,this quote shows character vs. self in that it gives a glance into Anne’s thoughts and what she is undergoing in her life. In Bettelheim's essay, The Ignored Lessons of Anne Frank, he criticizes Anne Frank's father because of the way he had his whole family hiding out in the attic of one family. Bettelheim claims he is not criticizing Mr. Frank, he just wants his readers to reexamine the way we read history. In his essay, Bettelheim concinced me that we, as readers should look again at the text and realize all the possibilities that the Franks had.
Anne Frank was a 13-year-old Jewish girl who was thrown into one of the worst periods in the history of the world; the Holocaust. Though she went through awful things that many people will never experience, she always kept the faith that there was still some good in everyone. She once said, “Despite everything I still believe people are truly good at heart.” Her diary, which she kept while her family was in hiding from the Nazis, shows the triumph of her spirit over the evil in the world even through the pain of adolescence. The Franks and Van Dans were hiding and they suffered many hardships, mentally and physically. Many people in Anne’s situation would have become bitter and resentful, but Anne never would despair.

The settings of two very similar stories can make them seem completely different. In a similar way, Sonia and Anne from the novel I Promised I Would Tell by Sonia Weitz and the play The Diary of Anne Frank by Albert Hackett are Jewish girls in the Holocaust who are struggling to survive. Both of their lives are at risk each day and throughout both of the stories, the girls are put in many difficult and dangerous situations and settings. Although these girls are both living in fear of losing their lives, Anne lives in a somewhat comfortable room for the first couple years of her struggle while Sonia is living in a horrifying Concentration Camp.
A major part of Anne Frank’s life was writing in her diary which she records her thoughts and feelings of her life. Unfortunately another big part of her life was the Nazis taking over her home and hiding. She hid for over 2 years in an office being isolated from the world around her. Sadly she didn’t survive the concentration camps when she got captured but her diary still exists displaying changes in maturity. Due to the circumstances surrounding her situation Anne Frank matured from a teenager to a young woman as seen in the development of her personality, relationships with other people and lifestyle.
