Fido, the dog, is lost and wandering the streets. You can’t find him anywhere. Where will he end up? Will someone grab him and call your telephone number from the dog collar? Will the dog warden take him to the local shelter? Or will he end up in some Dr. Frankstein style animal research facility? The unknown about animal research can allow our minds to go wild with ideas. With a better understanding of what medical animal research is, how it is governed, the medical advancements we have experienced and what is being done to eliminate it; I hope we can all start to respect and tolerate medical animal research. Medical animal research is when animals are used to test medical research that is necessary to human or animal health. Some animals that are used …show more content…
Some of the areas of medical research animals have been, and currently are, used in are: immunology, pharmacology, virology, toxicology, oncology and genetic for humans and animals. The function and make-up of our organs and cells are alike in most vertebrates. According to NIH (2008) a dog was used in the study that discovered insulin. A monkey was used to create the Polio vaccine. Pigs were used in studies that lead to the use of skin grafts for burn victims (p. 1). Additionally, the “Glutaraldehyde-fixed bioprosthetic heart valves (GBHVs), is derived from pigs or cows.” (Manji, Ekser, Menkis, & Cooper, 2014) Cow (bovine) and pig (porcine) have been used in GBHVs for more than 50 years. There are “more than 250,000 heart valves replaced each year.” (Manji, Ekser, Menkis, & Cooper, 2014) A little under half of those are replaced with GBHV each year. Depending upon the patient’s situation and age there are some downsides to the GBHV. One of the biggest issues is the inability to grow and age with patient. Pediatric patients, especially very young patients, require additional surgeries due to deterioration and lack of
Ladies and gentlemen of the Board, thankyou for allowing me to come and discuss with you the important message that is established in the Australian film Red Dog, directed by Kriv Stenders and why Australians should understand red dog, and why the board should display red dog at this year’s film festival.
Why do we have to use animals for research? Many humans and animals get the same illnesses because animals are biologically similar to humans. Animals have a shorter life cycle than humans and as a result, they can be studied throughout their whole life span or across several generations. According to information from the Office of Technology Assessment, it is estimated that between 17 and 23 million animals are used in research each year. Approximately 95% of these animals are rats and mice specifically bred for research and 4.25% of these animals include rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep, fish, frogs, insects, and other species. Most importantly, only 0.75% of the animals in research are cats, dogs, and primates. Major medical advances have been made because of the research of these animals. (Animal Research 2013)
the fda reports that 92 our of every 100 drugs that pass animal tests fail in humans
Millions of animals are used to test consumer products, but they also become victims of experiments for medical research. In The Ethics of Animal Research (2007) both authors state that there have been many medical advances with the development of medicines and treatments as a result of research conducted on animals (para 1). These medical improvements have helped many people be able to enjoy life, but some people still believe that animal research is mean and avoidable .... ... middle of paper ... ...
Research on animals is a vital process to stem cell research and other research in medicine. Animals can be used by scientist for research as long as it does not harm or kill an animal. Over the years animals have been experimented on for research and have contributed greatly to medicine. However, if animals are continuously killed for trial and error than that suggests animal cruelty.
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to act aganist animal testing because it is cruel and inhumane.
Attention getter: Lion, tigers, and bears, oh my! When the circus comes rolling into town, many people are excited to go and that is all that is talked about; about the clowns, the trapeze artists, the ring leader, the elephants and all the other marvelous wonders of the circus. But would you all still be excited to go if you knew the truth about the circus and the animal trainers of how they treat the animals? Because in reality, for our spirits to raise at the circus, they break the spirits of all the animals, especially the elephants.
Most seventeen year olds participate in a winter sport, myself included. Most started participating in their sport when they’re young, myself included. Most seventeen year old’s sport doesn’t take them to competitions in Main, Quebec, or Alaska, but mine did and still does. I race sled dogs. My parents met at a dog race in Chugiak, Alaska, a suburb of Anchorage. I’ve grown up playing with puppies, helping my parents to the start line, and racing my own team. I would go to my parent-teacher conference every year in elementary school and listen to my mom explain that we would be going to Alaska for two and a half months, and that I would need my work before we left. We experienced different reactions every year. For example, my second grade teacher exclaimed “So are you running the Iditarod? That’s so cool!” This reaction is common. Most people don’t know how the sport of dog racing works. Most people think a sled dog is a fluffy dog that logs hundreds of miles because their heartless owners forcing them to, but unfortunately this stereotype
Animal abuse for pets can range from neglecting to take care of the animal to the actual deliberate abuse of the animal such as beating, shooting, stabbing, or lighting the animal on fire.
Throughout centuries medical research has been conducted on animals. “Animals were used in early studies to discover how blood circulates through the body, the effect of anesthesia, and the relationship between bacteria and disease” (AMA 59). Experiments such as these seem to be outdated and actually are by today’s means, scientists now study commonly for three general purposes: (1) biomedical and behavioral research, (2) education, (3) drug and product testing (AMA 60). These three types of experiments allow scientists to gain vast amounts of knowledge about human b...
The sun dried grass crunched under David’s feet as he reached the mailbox, sweat plastering his golden hair to his forehead. The rural landscape of Shark Bay is bone dry; the lingering heat wave serving as a slap in the face with the wind blowing what is left of his fields into whirlwinds of dirt. His was once a land of luscious green landscape, the soft air turned branches into wind chimes as the trees swayed. These same trees have been bleached by the heat ridden gusts carving tortured sculpture in their trunks. Some might now see this world as one of desolate wasteland but David grew up with the land, this land was a living, growing friend that he knew, loved, and cared for as much as he did his wife and children.
According to the book “Science, Medicine, and Animals” by Committee on the Use of Animals in Research, National Academy of Sciences (1991), the animals also provide protection to a lot of endangered animals. The scientists can invent medicine, which is used to treat animal diseases, from animal experiments. Animal experiments can study the habit of animals, and help build suitable living environment for endangered animals. In addition, the animals who born in the laboratory have higher survival rate then the animals born in the nature. The most important thing is that, after the experiments, the animals will be released to the natural. So, the animal experiments can help animal
Doctors, nurses, animal care personnel, veterinarians, farmers, conservation managers, teachers, zoo keepers and others engaged in animal-related activities all benefit in animal research to broaden their knowledge. Testing is done as a check on the safety of new drugs or substances for human or animal use, and to check whether new batches of drugs and other agents like vaccines work. There is a legal requirement to test how safe and effective chemicals, drugs and other agents are before they can be sold.
Animals that reside on farms around the UK! We are here today to address an issue. A problem we have put up with for too long. It is a large one my friends, and so far the farm that I am proud to be a member of has been the only one to take the initiative to get rid of… HUMANS! Ever since they discovered agriculture, they have found a way to use us to do their dirty work.
Modern-day technology is not advanced enough yet to replace all animals completely from medical research. It could be hard to examine the effects a new medication or treatment has on the whole body on a computer model, so animals are still required. Many people claim that all test animals are tortured, abused, and neglected. The work performed on animals by scientists though is done with care and compassion. There are laws and regulations, such as the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service Policy, which set rules for how labs operate and handle the animals.
