Faye is fighting to re-home animals that have been abandoned and abused. Since 2012 she has re-homed more than 60 dogs, and about 20 kittens. Faye says, “I would do anything no matter what to save one animal.” It’s as if her whole entire life revolves around saving animals. Faye thinks just by adopting an animal you can help animal abandonment. Also, Faye has her own book on why animal abandonment isn’t good. Although Faye thinks her job is stressful, she thinks it’s easy because she enjoys doing her job and helping animals find a home.

Year after year people buy puppies from big breeders. Have you ever wondered where that puppy grew up? What kind of conditions the puppy lived in? Most puppies that someone would buy from a pet store are raised in puppy mills. Puppy mills are well-known for their “inhumane conditions” and the endless breeding of “unhealthy and genetically defective” dogs only for income. People should adopt rather than buy from a pet store or breeder. By adopting from a shelter, one could give a dog a second chance at a happy life.
So you want to adopt a puppy? Well there are two main places that your puppy could have been born. First, your puppy could have been born at a puppy mill. This is an inhumane, mass breeding location that can be very detrimental to your new pet. Another location that your puppy could have been born at is a breeder. This is a more humane location for your puppy to have been born. When adopting a puppy you should avoid going to a pet store because most pet stores receive their puppies from puppy mills; inhumane and overpopulated puppy breeding places.
Four journalists named Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Myers thought it would be a good idea to create a nonprofit organization to help animals that have are treated cruelly by either abuse or when they are left alone. The Humane Society has been helping animals since November 24, 1954(2). Their mission since the beginning has been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. In as little as six years, 67,000 puppies can come from the brood of just two dogs. In seven years, two cats and their offspring can create 420,000 kittens. There are approximately 70,000 kittens and puppies born each day (Quirk). What happens to all of these pets? Most of them will never make it to their first birthdays. According to Robert Aaron, "Every year in the United States, 8 million to 10 million cats and dogs are given up to animal shelters and others are abandoned." This may be due to the "throwaway" mentality of the populace today. Four to five million pets are euthanized every year in shelters, not always humanely (Aaron).
Call to Action: Challenge your audience to be a responsible pet consumer and not purchase dogs from pet stores or from the Internet. I encourage you to instead, adopt from their local animal shelter. At an animal shelter, you can find many amazing, healthy animals. If you do buy from a breeder, use extreme caution and ask to see the puppy’s parents. Also, please contact your congressional representative and encourage him or her to help pass the PUPS bill.
Nationally, roughly four million animals are killed in shelters every year. Of these, roughly 95% of all shelter animals are healthy and treatable. (No Kill Advocacy Center). No animal should have to ever be a part of these awful statistics. What will it take to help save these innocent animals from being killed senselessly? Animal kill shelters are horrible, inhumane, and overall completely unnecessary for multiple reasons: No Kill shelters improve adoption rates, all animals lives are valuable, and No Kill shelters save more money than other shelters.
When you begin your search, you will find there are many places you can get a dog. Pet stores, shelters, rescue groups and breeders are the most popular. I want to tell you why you should adopt a shelter dog rather than buy from a breeder. Adopting a rescue dog you will not only be saving a life, you will save a lot of money and you will be taking a stand again unnecessary, irresponsible breeding.
Abuse towards animals is recognized by many in the commercials shown on television, including the Sarah McLaughlin song and the pictures of animals starved and beaten. The commercials are shown quite regularly and give viewers a small look into the world of animal cruelty. What the commercials do not show, however, are the countless cases of people getting away with violence, as well as the hundreds of thousands of animals who did not live to make the commercials. Television, radio, and internet ads often depict and portray the lives of animals living in shelters, and ask the public to donate money each month for the cause. Without a doubt, this is the extent of what many people can say their experience with animal cruelty consists of: pictures and short video clips of half-dead dogs and cats left to die in over-crowded housing.

I have seen so many great dogs and cats get adopted by so many people that I just don’t get why people buy them. What does that benefit? Nothing. I have rescued more than 13 dogs from the streets and never have I purchased one. It makes me sad and angry when I see people selling animals on the internet or in person because probably more than 50% of them do not even care about the poor animals, they just want to make money. And the fact that they do not even know who the animal is going with is worse, because the person who is taking the pet might be a bad person or someone who wins money from dog fighting, which is very common to this
Many people believe that there are no longer cases of animal cruelty, but what people don’t know is that it’s happening all around the world today. Out of about 1,880 cruelty cases, 64% (about 1,212) involved dogs, 18% (about 337) involved cats, and 25% (about 470) involved other animals (source #3). Many animals are getting hurt around the world for no reason. “The number of pets being abandoned has risen by 65 percent as owners struggle to afford to look after them” (Ward). If people cannot afford to own a pet, they shouldn’t adopt a pet. If necessary, they should try taking their pet to a local animal shelter for someone else that can adopt the pet and afford it. “More than 50% of the fur in the United States comes from China, where there are no penalties for abusing animals, which are raised in unbearably cramped and run-down cages on fur farms” (source #14).
