Later on in the chapter, Im is invited to a placed called the Battle Royal believing to have been invited for the purpose of giving a speech that has earned him high marks in his community. However before he even has a chance to understand what’s going on, he and some other african american fellows are pushed onto stage and are being told to fight one another. Instead of expressing their displeasure with the white men, the black men were forced to take their anger out on each other. The narrator also seems to seek approval by the white men; remembering his speech as he fights the other men. According to the protagonist: Should I try to win against the voice out there? Would not this go against my speech, and was not this a moment for humility, for nonresistance?” ( ). He’s worried about defying the white men; letting them down by not performing well enough.
Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man depicts a realistic society where white people act as if black people are less than human. Ellison uses papers and letters to show the narrator’s poor position in this society.
In contemporary America, the blacks have searched for companionship, success, and freedom, both physical and mental. Even after several years of [the] abolition of slavery, the blacks were not able to see [a white=whites] eye-to-eye. They were still [a puppet=puppets] for the white men?s show. They are afraid of the white men who demand that they look at her. That could mean beatings or even death for black men in times past]. Blindfolded, the Negro boys stage a "battle royal," a brawl in which they batter each other to the drunken shouts of the whites. After such [a] humiliating and ghastly experience, the terrified boy delivers a prepared speech of gratitude to his white benefactors.
	The narrator in Ellison’s short story suffers much. He is considered to be one of the brighter youths in his black community. The young man is given the opportunity to give a speech to some of the more prestigious white individuals. The harsh treatment that he is dealt in order to perform his task is quite symbolic. It represents the many hardships that the African American people endured while they fought to be treated equally in the United States. He expects to give his speech in a positive and normal environment. What faces him is something that he never would have imagined. The harsh conditions that the boys competing in the battle royal must face are phenomenal. At first the boys are ushered into a room where a nude woman is dancing. The white men yell at the boys for looking and not looking at the woman. It is as if they are showing them all of the good things being white can bring, and then saying that they aren’t good enough for it since they were black. In 1952, Ralph Ellison published the only novel of his career: Invisible Man; telling the story of an unnamed “invisible” narrator. Early on, the narrator delineates his invisibility to “people refus[ing] to see [him];” society neglects to see him as a result of his black lineage (Ellison 3). Ellison incorporates several objects, frequently appearing and reappearing throughout the novel, to expose social and intellectual issues imposed on the black community. Amid the “procession of tangible, material objects” moving “in and out of the text” is the dancing Sambo doll whose purpose is to symbolically represent cruel stereotypes and the destructive power of injustice that blacks fall victim to (Lucas 172). Ellison’s rendering of the small paper dolls, representing obedient black slaves, “unveils an astonishing correspondence between the past and the present” and functions as a force to the narrator’s most essential consciousness of his environment and identity (Lucas 173). The Sambo, whose sole purpose was to entertain the white community, further functions to symbolize, through its stereotype, the power whites have to control the movements of African Americans.
Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man tells of one man's realizations of the world. This man, the invisible man, comes to realize through experience what the world is really like. He realizes that there is illusion and there is reality, and reality is seen through light. The Invisible Man says, "Nothing, storm or flood, must get in the way of our need for light and ever more and brighter light. The truth is the light and light is the truth" (7). Ellison uses light as a symbol for this truth, or reality of the world, along with contrasts between dark/light and black/white to help show the invisible man's evolving understanding of the concept that the people of the world need to be shown their true ways. The invisible man becomes aware of the world's truth through time and only then is he able to fully understand the world in which he lives.
One of the major motifs in Invisible Man is blindness. The first time we’re shown blindness in the novel is at the “battle royal”. The blindfolds that all of the contestants wear symbolize how the black society is blind to the way white society is still belittling them, despite the abolishment of slavery. Our unnamed narrator attends the battle royal to deliver the graduation speech he had written. When he arrived, the narrator says “I was told that since I was to be there anyway I might as well take part in the battle royal to be fought by some of my schoolmates as part of the entertainment” (Ellison 17). Although, the white men asked him to come to the battle royal in order to deliver his graduation speech, they make him participate in the battle royal, where the white men make young black men fight each other as a form of entertainment for them. When the black men put their blindfolds on to fight in this battle, they are blind, both figuratively and literally. They cannot see the people they are fighting against, just as they can’t see how the white men are exploiting them for their own pleasure.
In the opening paragraph of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, the protagonist introduces readers to what he means when he refers to himself as invisible: the protagonist is seen only for the color of his skin, and thus, grouped into an African-American general populace. In grouping the protagonist, whites not only refuse to see him but also forbid him from possessing an individual identity. Using Ellison’s prologue to Invisible Man, Louis Armstrong’s “Black and Blue” (referenced in the prologue), and additional intertextual allusions, this essay argues that jazz music enables Ellison’s protagonist to separate himself from the African-American general populace and retain his individuality; jazz music shows him that he already accepts his invisibility, and that he listens differently to the lyrics than others. The wider implication being made is that, by listening to jazz music, an invisible man is compelled to act. He learns to take advantage of his invisibility so as to undermine the culture that oppresses him and be seen.
Ralph Ellison uses symbolism in the first chapter of Invisible Man to illustrate the culture in which he lived and was raised. In the chapter, entitled “Battle Royal”, Ellison intends to give his graduation speech to the white elite of his community. However, before her can deliver said speech, he is forced to perform humiliating tasks. The use of symbols is evident throughout “Battle Royal” particularly with regard to the Hell imagery, power struggle, and the circus metaphor.
Being in a state of emotional discomfort is almost like being insane. For the person in this discomfort they feel deranged and confused and for onlookers they look as if they have escaped a mental hospital. From the reader’s perspective it seems as if he is totally out of control of his body. This portrayal of the narrator is to express how torn he is between his two selves. He does not know how to tell Mary, the woman who saved him and has been like a mother to him, that he is leaving her for a new job, nor does he know if he wants to. His conflicting thoughts cause him to feel and seem a little mad. The author purposefully uses the narrator’s divergent feelings to make portray him as someone uncomfortable in is own skin. This tone is portrayed using intense diction, syntax, and extended metaphors.
Identity is one’s conception and expression of his or her individuality. It is who he or she is. It consists roughly of what makes him or her different from others. One’s identity is built based on one’s experiences and external influences. Ralph Ellison in his novel titled Invisible Man discusses the struggles an African American man faces in his identity due to the racial prejudice he is subjected to in American society. In fact the novel was published in 1952, which was a time period where African Americans possessed little rights. Due to the little rights African Americans possessed in American society, they were an easy target for the white community to denigrate and discriminate. The white community humiliated, mortified and physically abused African Americans which led the black community to pass through society as “unknown”. In Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, the narrator goes through many hardships that make him who he is. He experiences being discouraged and unlucky many different times throughout the novel. However, there are three major times that the narrator goes through these hardships. He is mistreated for his race, especially in the beginning of the novel. He is discouraged by the president of his college when he is expelled. He is also taken down when he finds out that the Brotherhood is not who he thought they were. In Ellison’s Invisible Man, the narrator is degraded and humiliated three major times throughout the novel.
The narrator declares that he “did not become alive until [he] discovered [his] invisibility,” (Ellison, 7). The audience is taken back to a time when the narrator lived in ignorance, before he had accepted that invisibility was not an element of fantasy but a fact of his reality. In another moment of violence, the narrator is forced into darkness with a blindfold and the audience truly sees the hardships of exiting without awareness of the dual condition of African Americans. The narrator was invited to give a speech to the affluent white men of the town. But his speech was eclipsed by a battle royal, a violent event in which curses and slurs were hurled in his direction. Pain and suffering were forced upon him by the white patriarchs in the room and yet the boy was still concerned with the “dignity” of his speech and even after he was knocked unconscious the narrator wondered if he “would be allowed to speak,” (Ellison, 26). Even after being brutally beaten and slandered he still felt compelled to impress those who could not fully see him. He still felt as if his worth was determined by the white man’s praise. The reactions to his speech, which urges those who face oppression to “Cast down [their] buckets where [they] are, further signify the blindness of the observers. Ralph Ellison uses several symbols to emphasize the narrator’s attempt to escape from stereotypes and his theme of racial inequalities in his novel, Invisible Man. In particular, the symbolism of the cast-iron is one that haunts the narrator throughout the book. Ellison’s character discovers a small, cast-iron bank that implies the derogatory stereotypes of a black man in society at the time. From its “wide-mouthed, red-lipped, and very black” features, to its suggestion of a black man entertaining for trivial rewards, this ignites anger in Ellison’s narrator. The cast-iron bank represents the continuous struggle with the power of stereotypes, which is a significant theme throughout the novel.1 The bank plays a significant role in the book by aiding to the author’s message of stereotypes, the narrator’s search for an individual identity, and his languished desire for equality.
