Animal Farm By George Orwell Animal Farm is a story of how the animals revolted because of the way they were treated by Mr. Jones, the farmer. They felt that the farmers made all the profit, reaped all the rewards but didn't do any of the work. So they formed a government called Animalism. In Animalism, there are no owners, no rich, but no poor, workers got a better life, and all animals are equal. They had even established laws called the Seven Commandments, which were intended to give basic rights to animals and protect them from oppression. The goals of the government were also established. The goals said that everyone was equal, there would be more food and sleep for all, there was to be respect for all animals, and they would build a windmill to make life better for all. By the end of the book, all this no longer existed. The animals were getting less sleep, less food, and less respect. The windmill became a source of money for the leaders, not for all the animals. The seven commandments were gradually changed to suit the pigs and then there was only one Commandment left. "'Are the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be, Benjamin?' There was nothing now except for a single Commandment. It ran: All animals are equal but some are more equal than others" That single commandment made the pigs more powerful. Animalism no longer existed. At the beginning of the story, there were two leaders, Snowball and Napoleon, who were sharing power. Snowball was good with words, honest, good at arguing, was inventive, and believed in technology. He stayed in touch with the animals, and wanted to make things better for them. Napoleon, on the other hand, was bad with words, dishonest, hated arguing, and was not inventive. He wanted to be above all the animals; he didn't care about making things better. He only believed in serving himself. In order for Napoleon to be above all the animals, he had to get Snowball out of the way. Napoleon did that by getting his dogs to scare him away so Snowball would never come back to the farm. Napoleon was now in total control of the farm and the animals. Napoleon and the pigs started acting like humans - they would drink, wear clothes, sleep in beds, fight, and walk. They did everything that they had once said was wrong.
hour's sleep in order to hear what he had to say". Old Major was a
Today, half of state prisoners are serving time for nonviolent crimes. Over half of federal prisoners are serving time for drug crimes. Mass incarceration seems to be extremely expensive and a waste of money. It is believed to be a massive failure. Increased punishments and jailing have been declining in effectiveness for more than thirty years. Violent crime rates fell by more than fifty percent between 1991 and 2013, while property crime declined by forty-six percent, according to FBI statistics. Yet between 1990 and 2009, the prison population in the U.S. more than doubled, jumping from 771,243 to over 1.6 million (Nadia Prupis, 2015). While jailing may have at first had a positive result on the crime rate, it has reached a point of being less and less worth all the effort. Income growth and an aging population each had a greater effect on the decline in national crime rates than jailing. Mass incarceration and tough-on-crime policies have had huge social and money-related consequences--from its eighty billion dollars per-year price tag to its many societal costs, including an increased risk of recidivism due to barbarous conditions in prison and a lack of after-release reintegration opportunities. The government needs to rethink their strategy and their policies that are bad
Orwell uses words to demonstrate that language can be deceptive, powerful, and manipulative. A farm is brought up, where the social order has been corrupt by the superior class of the pigs. The major difference between the pigs and other animals is that pigs can fluently use language and other animals cannot. Orwell introduces the plot of the pigs’ politics being corrupt due to greed and intense pride of their species. The pigs seek to make use of other animals’ underdeveloped linguistic skills and ignorance. Horses, goats, sheep and other animals have been assigned enormous amount of work by the pigs to cultivate the farm and build a windmill. The pigs call themselves brain workers and do not take part in work that involves physical movement. They easily convince other animals into thinking that this is the reason why Jones is not coming back. In this deceiving manner of using words, the pigs have ascended to the leading class of this “society” while the other animals resulted in belonging to the “working class”. Also, the book constantly mentions how powerful language can be. Napoleon’s unique diction that carries an intimidating and admonishing effect causes the animals to have an unconditional belief in him. Orwell purposely exemplifies a society within a fable to effectively note these three aspects of deception, power, and manipulation and to emphasize that one’s mastery of language is crucial in order not to be tricked and manipulated by the words of the elite class who were given proper education.
There are many pros and cons to trying to reducing the number of overcrowding of prisons in the United States. Many would be opposed to the early release of those who have committed even menial crimes without thought to the issue of overcrowding. The solution isn’t to keep building new prisons, but to have prisons, law makers and rehabilitative programs all work together for the main goal of public safety. In order to maintain public safety, certain measures need to be taken to make sure those who are being released are no threat and that those who would pose a risk, are kept behind bars. Between the costs that are associated with imprisonment, parole and probation and the programs needed to rehabilitate, the problem of prison overcrowding
In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the pig Napoleon uses specific tactics to gain power and control over the animal farm. Some of these techniques include controlling information through education, scapegoating, use of fear, swaying public opinion and blind obedience.
Rational choice theory asserts that economic agents perform market transactions with a predefined and complete set of preferences. Having limited information, budget and time to make a decision – consumers strive for the highest satisfaction, known as utility (Microeconomics). To buy at the same supplier again – previous satisfaction would prevail upon any other argument. Should the expectation have been met or exceeded – the search phase of a new decision process would be shortened, saving consumers valuable time and limiting cost, which in turn helps in maximising perceived value of the product. Hence, LPs would only be successful when designed to maximise customer-perceived value by either increasing the total offering’s benefit or cutting total consumer’s cost”.
The American prison system is one that can be viewed as extremely flawed. Our prisons are overcrowded, and our incarceration rate trumps all other nations in the world. However, crime rates have dropped in the past couple decades. Despite these drops, we still see a great deal of mass incarceration. In our correctional system, we fail to focus on rehabilitation for criminals, and reintegrating them back into society. Instead we often tend to push criminals further away from normal lives with extremely long sentencings, sentence minimums, and even keeping them out of jobs after they have served their terms in prison. Criminals also loose the fundamental right of voting in some states, as well as having a much harder time owning homes, and even
In the United States of America’s criminal justice system, both violent and non-violent offenders are imprisoned. This imprisonment has led to overpopulation of our prisons, both federal and state-owned. Overpopulation and overcrowding can cause stress on the average, everyday tax-paying citizen as it becomes very expensive to house the over one-hundred and fifty thousand sentenced prisoners each year (US Bureau of Justice Statistics). That number adds up, because even with the over six hundred thousand offenders released each year, there are even more that remain in the prison system (US Bureau of Justice Statistics). The total number of prisoners in the U.S. state and federal correctional facilities, which includes prisons, rehabilitation centers, and juvenile detention centers, is 1,574,700 (US Bureau of Justice Statistics). This cycle of overpopulation needs a long-term fix, not some cookie-cutter solution that will only alleviate the problem temporarily. Due to the
The novel Animal Farm by George Orwell was a very interesting, complex, and informing novel. In the novel, George Orwell uses farm animals to portray people of power and the common people during the Russian Revolution. The novel starts off with Major explaining to all the animals in the farm how they are being treated wrongly and how they can over throw their owner, Mr. Jones. They finally gang up on their owner and he leaves the farm.
This unimaginable tale, is the course of events upon Pi’s journey in the Pacific ocean after the ship that Pi and his family were aboard crashes, leaving him stranded with a tiger named Richard Parker, an orangutan, a zebra, and a hyena. Pi loses everything he has and starts to question why this is happening to him. This is parallel to the story of Job. Job is left with nothing and is experiencing great suffering and he begins to demand answers from God. Both Pi and Job receive no answers, only being left with their faith and trust. To deal with this great suffering Pi begins to describe odd things which begin to get even more unbelievable and ultimately become utterly unrealistic when he reaches the cannibalistic island. Richard Parker’s companionship serves to help Pi through these events. When the reader first is intoduced to Richard Parker he emerges from the water, making this symbolic of the subconscious. Richard Parker is created to embody Pi’s alter ego. Ironically, each of these other animals that Pi is stranded with comes to symbolize another person. The orangutan represents Pi’s mother, the zebra represents the injured sailor, and the hyena represents the cook. Pi fabricated the people into animals in his mind to cope with the disillusion and trails that came upon him while stranded at the erratic and uncontrollable sea,
According to Cynthia Caporizzo of the Obama White House, Each year, the Federal prisons release more than 700,000 people, and another 9 million go through local jails. “Statistics indicate that more than two-thirds of state prisoners are rearrested within three years of their release and half are re-incarcerated” (CAPORIZZO 2011). Recidivism rates this high will mean more crime, victims, and more increased pressure on the criminal justice system (CAPORIZZO 2011).
Though Snowball was a fair leader who truly believed in the raw ideas of animalism, Napoleon was a corrupt, sly tyrant, who would stop at nothing to achieve complete dominance over the farm. He takes advantage of the naivety of his comrades and slowly crawls his way to power, first by driving Snowball away from the farm and tricking the animals into believing that Snowball had malicious intentions, and then by steadily altering the rations of food so that the pigs result with the most. He breaks every commandment and entirely alters the definitions of animalism and equality, as the pigs are treated as higher beings than the others. The animals are helpless against Napoleon’s cunning wit, and before they can put a stop to the tyranny, Napoleon has already taken complete control of the farm, stating that “all animals are equal, but some are more equal than
In the United States of America, a.k.a “greatest country in the world”, there is a problem with the way the system works. In this free country, there is an issue with prison overcrowding. “Over 2.2 million people are in prisons and jails around the country,”(Williams.1) which
The story of Animal Farm takes place in a farmhouse, somewhere in England. The farm animals are property of the "cruel" and "evil" farmer Mr. Jones. Old Major, a wise pig, and one of the oldest animals on the farm, calls for a secret meeting to take place later at night. At the meeting, Old Major tells the animals about a dream he recently had. In his dream, he sees a revolution taking place against Mr. Jones, and the freedom of all animals. Old Major points out to the animals that the cause of their miserable existences is the tyranny of man, who is a lazy, useless creature who steals the fruits of the animals for his own advantage. He encourages the animals to band together to defeat their enemy, and teaches them "Beasts of England," the song which becomes their revolutionary anthem and battle cry. But just before his dream becomes a reality, three days later Old Major passes away in his sleep. The speech gives the animals a new outlook on life, and feel it is their duty to fulfill his dream. And so, the revolution of the farm animals begins.
The United States has more than twenty percent of the world’s prison population, making us the world’s largest jailer. From 1978 to 2014, our prison population has risen 408%. 1 in 110 adults are incarcerated in a prison or local jail in the U.S. This marks the highest rate of imprisonment in American history. 1 in 35 adults are under some form of correctional control, counting prison, jail, parole or probation. In America, our criminal justice system is about keeping communities safe and treating people fairly, regardless of their skin color or how much money they make. In order for our system to do a good job, it must be cost-effective by using our taxpayer money and public resources wisely, while using solid evidence instead of fear. Unfortunately
