Recommended: Animals in captivity
Imagine you were the one being put into a cage, imagine seeing your family get slaughtered in front of you, imagine being forced to do unnatural tricks for people, imagine losing your life and being dehumanized just for entertaining people. If you were put in that situation, would you want to live that life? Animals are being harmed everywhere, even if you don’t realize it. When animals are being harmed or neglected by a human being, this is called Animal Cruelty. Animals should not be used for entertainment and games due to animals are being harmed in the name of entertainment and are being neglected. Animals should not be used for entertainment because they are being forced to do things without their will. One example would be the Ringling …show more content…
The aquatics centers neglect the animals needs. The trainers sometime withhold food from the dolphins and orcas and not only that, but they also isolate the animals from each other,"Trainers sometimes withhold food from dolphins and orcas in order to force them to learn and perform tricks. They may also isolate these highly social creatures,”(lcanimal.org). By withholding the food from the animals forces them to do tricks, leads to stress and anxiety due to the treatment they are receiving from the trainers, and being isolated from their families makes them more stressed. Equally important, the trainers don’t have the requirements for the animal to live which leads to diseases and injuries,”Many animals are injured when they are imprisoned in these tanks. Some symptoms are dorsal fin collapse, also known as drooping fin syndrome, this is because of the low water levels. Next, skin peeling and eye irritation, this is caused from over-chlorinated water and other harmful chemicals in the tank,”(lcanimal.org). The animals' needs are different from what the trainers might think they need, the animals deserve an environment where they can be able to live in and not get injured. The environment they live in is not good for their health from the chemicals. On the other hand, researches may be able to find out a lot more about the animal when researching, “Being with the animals, there is a lot of research done seeing animals up close,”(prezi.com). People will be able to learn more about the animal they are looking at. Then again, the animals are living here for the rest of their lives, and they start to form irrational behaviors because of the environment they are living in,"In the wild, marine mammals are perpetually stimulated by their environment….they cannot act on their basic instincts. As a result, many engage in stereotypic behaviors, becoming abnormally aggressive, bored, or depressed,”(lcanimal.org). These behaviors
Some argue SeaWorld is not a problem, because it is good enough for research, because SeaWorld gives them protection from the outside world where they wouldn’t survive as long, or that being kept in a pool simply doesn’t affect them physically or mentally. SeaWorld is inhumane to Orcas. They do not take care of their physical or mental health, it causes the animals stress and anxiety, and causes them to be aggressive, leading to deathly situations. SeaWorld’s biggest pool is forty feet deep, which may seem large to us, but not when you’re a twenty foot whale that is used to swimming hundreds of miles a day. Keeping Orcas in captivity is not in any way good for their physical or mental health.
Little do they know that they are placing their money in the hands of people who are destroying the lives, “SeaWorld has experienced roughly one orca death per year since its breeding program began,” and reputations of wild and beautiful animals (Rose 4). The animals that are held captive are not bred and born in captivity, but rather captured and sold to the park or rescued and relocated into the parks afterward. The tanks made for these captive creatures are nowhere near the size that they should be in order to create a comfortable life for the orcas. In fact a wild orca spends most of it's life swimming. The orca swims when it is hunting and traveling and breeding. An orca that lives the entirety of it's life in the ocean will swim thousands upon thousands of miles in it's lifetime. The orcas like Tilikum, “the largest orca in captivity, weighing 12,500 pounds and measuring over 22 feet in length,” who are taken out of the ocean and placed in tanks for the enjoyment of mankind do not obtain the ability or the luxury of performing such a basic need in their life (SeaWorld of Hurt 1). The orcas that are held captive can not swim thousands of miles like they need to in order to remain healthy not only physically but mentally as well. These orcas are left to live in a rather confined space and spend most of their time relatively stationary when compared to
Yet these people do not stop to consider what is going on behind the scenes when they are watching the dolphins and whales swim and dive through the water with their trainers. If one were to approach a trainer and ask about the abuse that these animals suffer every day in order for them to perform their shows and tricks, the trainer would say that it is an educational and necessary aspect to keep the animals in captivity. They would also defend these abusive acts by speaking of the information they are gaining of the animals and how they can use this information to help those in the wild. This is due to their own ignorance that they would say such terrible things about these intelligent yet helpless animals. These animals endure much more torture in captivity than most people would like to admit to themselves. Furthermore, the “facts” that the trainers tell the visitors of SeaWorld are untrue. For example, as one sees in the movie Blackfish, the trainers do not give accurate facts regarding life span in and out of captivity as well as the percentage of the collapsed fins
This story Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel about an animal revolution over an oppressive farmer. The irony in the story comes when the pigs turn into the very thing revolted against. They exhibit the same cruelty by treating the other animals the same or even worse than previous owners. This cycle of cruelty is shown in the Russian revolution by Joseph Stalin who is represented by Napoleon in the story. Cruelty in animal farm is shown by the human’s treatment of the animals, and the animal’s eventual treatment of each other and the ironic characteristics of the two.
Animal cruelty occurs all over the world. The human race has a major effect on the natural world, especially animals. Animal cruelty is an example of how man has taken advantage of his power. Those exhibiting cruelty towards animals have been proven to have a tendency to harbor violent psychological problems. Animal cruelty occurs all over the world. Fortunately, many countries have enacted laws and penalties to stop this harsh behavior.
Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
“Animal Entertainment” refers to any animals used to act, perform, or fight for the enjoyment of humans. zoos, circuses, and bullfighting are all examples of animals used for entertainment. While many applaud these firms for putting on a spectacular show, many others argue that the animals are treated unfair. All of these animals are taken out of their natural environment and forced to perform acts not typically in their behavioral range. If one pays close attention at the circus, for example, it is visible how these animals are treated. Trainers threaten tigers with a whip and often hit elephants with metal on their legs. These techniques are inhumane and best explain why animals should not be used for entertainment. The use of animals for entertainment is a form of animal abuse because of the way the
Dolphins are extremely social animals and having to interact with the same group of dolphins every single day is not healthy. “Many dolphins do not survive the trauma of capture. Of those that do, 53% die within three months of confinement. Captive dolphins also suffer and die from intestinal disease, stress-related illness and chlorine poisoning” (Plight of The Captive Dolphins). With all of the stress of being held in captivity, you would think employees at marine parks and aquariums would be opposed to this practice.
The ugly truth is that animals are dying at the hands of their owners everyday, some in very violent ways that can be avoided given the right solution. Slaughterhouses, puppy mills, dog fighting, and so on, are just a few examples of how animals are being treated badly by people. Animal cruelty is a form of violence which, unfortunately, sometimes goes hand in hand with child abuse.... ... middle of paper ... ... Also, violence towards animals needs to be included in assessments for child protective services, in order to better prevent animals being placed in dangerous hands.
The article “Animals Used as Entertainment” lists rodeos, circuses, bullfighting, horse racing, cockfighting, dog fighting, and zoos as examples of the many ways animals are used in entertainment. Circuses and zoos are the two most relevant forms of animal mistreatment. Both of these are sources of entertainment for children and adults. Zoos declare that the...
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
Animals should not be kept in captivity for any reason unless they have been harmed and need to receive treatment, but they should be released as soon as they are healthy and capable of taking care of themselves again. The use of a captive animal for research, education, or entertainment is just wrong; no creature deserves to have their life taken away for our benefit. Would you want to be captured and put in a tiny box, or a fake little ecosystem, or abused and tortured because apparently that’s the only possible way to train an animal? How about just knowing that your real life is over and now all you get to do is put on a show for people? That is what we put these animals through for our entertainment, we tear children away from their parents.
The HSUS says that dolphins act “like domesticated dogs” while in confinement. The view that dolphins and other aquatic animals could sufficiently be released after being raised by humans is opposed when the HSUS states that only some are can be released sufficiently “if allowed to once again become self-sufficient”. A chance of the animal not being able to adapt well to the wild can be avoided by not confining animals, thus keeping independence among the dolphins. The transition from being used for our entertainment into having to learn how to live on their own is not ideal for the animal’s health. Many supporters of aquariums believe that raising animals in confinement and releasing them when they can sustain for themselves are protecting the endangered.
Animal Cruelty has many forms, many reasons and most importantly many victims. It is a growing problem in today’s society. Many people may wonder why people abuse animals. The thought is simple, however the answer is a little more complex, there are three main types of animal cruelty. The three reasons are as follows: unintentional, intentional, and cruel intentions. I will discuss each one in more detail.
Animal cruelty is when pain and suffering is inflicted on an animal for reason other than self defense. This topic resonates with me because of my great respect and love for animals. Watching animals methodically perform is truly remarkable like those at sea world, as well as horse and dog racing. Is using animals for entertainment and gaming cruel? Some would say that forcing animals to perform for our amusement is cruel, others disagree opposing that the animals are well treated and performing the same acts they do in the wild.
