The field of psychology includes many different organizations in the fields of psychology. The American Counseling Association and the American Psychological Association help promote professional research and resources for counselors in the field. Degrees are available through the doctorate level and two types of programs tend to be offered. Both Clinical and Counseling psychology programs are common, though they offer different theoretical models of instruction and practice.
Clinical psychology programs offer training in the approach that emphasizes diagnosis and treatment. World War II showed the need for effective assessment and interventions with the soldiers returning from war. This tends to be a medical model and most job placements are in a medical setting such as a hospital or medical center. Clinical psychologists tend to have behavioral or psychoanalytic orientations. Working in a medical setting allows clinical

I would also like to utilize some sort of Animal Assisted Therapy, AAT, in a community setting. Animal assisted therapy is underutilized and could be very beneficial for stress management and overcoming barriers. AAT is an intervention designed to “improve the physical, social, and emotional function of patients via specific and time-delimited objectives (González-Ramírez, M. T., Ortiz-Jiménez, X. A., & Landero-Hernández, R, 2013).” Trained animals usually include dogs, cats, and horses.
There is a therapy dog group in my area that visits hospitals, nursing homes, and home bound individuals. AAT has been shown to improve anxiety and reduce fear in hospitalized children. It has also been shown that by simply having dogs present, client’s levels of stress were reduced. It may also motivate clients to return to treatment and help clients adhere to treatment. (Marcus, Bernstein, Constantin, Kunkel, Breuer, & Hanlon,
In addition, Some elderly people have cardiovascular health problems. Cardiovascular problems occur when people get older , peoples heats can’t beat as fast during fiscal activity or stress as when they were younger. Therapy dogs could help “improve cardiovascular health.” (“?”) Service dogs are traind to Perform specific tasks to help mental health patients. People who have taken care of the elderly " have seen elderly with significant dementia who can be aggressive or mean, change their behavior when there is an animal around."
The US Census in 2000 has reported that, during the late 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century there has been a large increase in the number of elderly people living in the United States of America, which will likely result in an increased incidence of dementia. In recent years, dog-assisted therapy has been widely regarded as a generally accepted method of providing elderly residents with good feelings and an increase in self-maintenance behavior. The aim of this study is to examine the psychological and behavioral effects of dog-assisted therapy on elderly residents with dementia. I predict that dog-assisted therapy will help elderly people with dementia with their behavioral and emotional problems such as aggression, agitation and psychosis.
Equine veterinarians are animal doctors who provide medical care for horses. They examine, test and occasionally operate on or euthanize the animals. Travel to ranches and farms is often necessary, and equine vets have to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions. Being an equine veterinarian is a pleasant career choice because of great interactions with varied types of horses and their owners , the basic information, and the pros and cons of an equine veterinarian.
Most people are familiar with service dogs and have seen them in action. Animal-assisted therapy is similar service animals in that an animal-human healing partnership is being created. However, the difference is that therapy pets are typically used to treat a mental disability whereas people with physical disabilities use service dogs to help them in many ways. Therapy animals are used in a wide variety of places, such as, hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, therapy sessions, mental healthcare facilities, and even in people’s homes. These amazing animals are used on a wide variety of different disorders, but they are utilized mostly by people suffering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD. For people with these mental health disorders, everything in live can be difficult and challenging, however with the help of animal-assisted therapy, their mood, motivation, and life can dramatically improve. Anyone who hears about these brave, loving animals soon falls in love with them. From a medical standpoint, there have been many successful studies and the support for animal-assisted therapy still continues to grow in doctors and therapists across the nation.
Basically saying that yes psychology is more than a clinic or office career but there is also an entire “exotic” field of psychology with different travel opportunities. Different types of traveling psychologists include; military, sports, environmental, forensics, circus, NASA, google, filmmakers, traffic, and etc. (“while the traditional image of a psychologist may be someone stuck behind a desk all day seeing patient after patient, in reality, many psychology careers offer frequent travel. In many cases a patient wont visit them the psychologists visits the patient, some even travel overseas”). While everyone assume it is a boring desk job it can simply become an opportunity to travel and do what you love, helping people mentally and emotionally. With that being said psychologists have many different fields, and just because it seems unentertaining look into all the other options, each year hundreds of thousands of undergraduates decide to become psychology majors, along the way they gain a greater knowledge of all the fields and branches in psychology. With plenty of education and experience comes the opportunity to advance in your

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), which can be provided in a group or individual settings, is designed to promote improvement in a human’s physical, social, emotional, or cognitive function. An article by Chitic, Rusu, and Szamoskozi (2012) provides an analysis in order to determine the value of AAT. Both dogs and horses that were trained for AAT were examined and studied to determine their effectiveness in treating patients with psychological disorders. The results showed that both therapy dogs and horses were valuable aids to the therapeutic process. The analysis suggests that proper training and repeated sessions were necessary for proper treatment of patients. In addition, certain disorders may benefit more than others in regards to AAT. For example, a child with ADHD may not benefit from a therapy dog’s presence, for it may worsen the hyperactive symptoms. On the other hand, a patient with depression may benefit greatly from the same animal (Chitic, Rusu, Szamoskozi, 2012). These findings are a perfect starting point to answering the research question: Do patients who engage in AAT display a betterment in their overall emotional well-being, as well as show improvement in their interpersonal interactions...
You wake up in the hospital, look around, and find a doctor hovering nearby declaring that you have just suffered through a heart attack; affirming that if not for your dog, you would have died. You remember back to earlier that day: sitting on the couch, feeling a little off, hearing your dog barking, sensing him nudging you, going to the phone to call the ambulance, and having your dog by your side until you were safe inside the aluminum walls of the emergency vehicle. Although it sounds abnormal that a dog would be the one to save someone’s life, situations similar to the one above are not uncommon. Dogs and other household pets have been shown to be able to detect medical emergencies, including heart attacks and seizures, in their owners.
A career in psychology is one that offers a wide variety of paths in which you can pursuit it. When one decides that they want to accomplish a degree in psychology, the next step is to decide what specific path you are willing to take. In the beginning we might feel overwhelmed, unsure and scared by having all these choices, and not knowing which one to turn to, or if were even making the right choice. Exploring the different paths in the career can help us narrow down the alternatives that we are exposed to. I have decided to major in psychology and work in a field with kids, and have decided to explore the following jobs in the field of psychology: clinical psychology, developmental psychology,
The neurocritical care service I work with, cares for a multitude of patients with complex critical illnesses and traumatic injuries. Physical illness and injury, anxiety, fear, sadness, and stress are all common themes among patients admitted the neurocritical care unit. For my potential DNP project, I would like to explore the use of animal assisted therapy (AAT) in the neurocritical care unit. AAT is a type of therapy that brings animals and people together with the hope of improving the physical and emotional state of a patient (Barba, 1995). There is positive evidence to support the use of AAT in a variety of healthcare settings (Halm, 2008). AAT has been associated with physical and psychological benefits (Barba, 1995). The aim of this project would be to measure if AAT has a positive physiologic and psychologic impact on patients and caregivers in the neurocritical care
Many people in the world today suffer with problems such as anxiety and depression. As a way to treat these problems, those people should use animal-assisted therapy. Animal-assisted therapy (also known as pet therapy) is used in many hospitals and is growing more every day.
Ever since I was in middle school I was fascinated by the world of psychology. The thought of being able to get into someone’s mind by merely speaking them through it intrigued me terribly and I was just so amazed by all of the different areas of it I didn’t know for a couple of years what I wanted to do in that field specifically, but I knew I was meant to be a psychologist of some sorts. I knew I was meant to help people with their mental issues and illnesses in the way I was helped which eventually led me to clinical psychology. “Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness, abnormal behavior and psychiatric problems.” (Cherry, Kendra. "Clinical Psychology - What Is Clinical Psychology”) To sum it up, a clinical psychologist is someone who diagnoses people to help them find out what issue they have mentally; like how a doctor would diagnose a patient with a physical disease I would be helping a patient with their mental ailment. To do this I will have to go through many years of schooling but I know in the end it will be worth it if I can have a worthwhile career such as this one.
Animal Cruelty has many forms, many reasons and most importantly many victims. It is a growing problem in today’s society. Many people may wonder why people abuse animals. The thought is simple, however the answer is a little more complex, there are three main types of animal cruelty. The three reasons are as follows: unintentional, intentional, and cruel intentions. I will discuss each one in more detail.
Psychology’s main definition is the study of the mind, behaviors, and disorders. Psychology also has many other definitions: “the science of the mind and behavior, the mental or behavioral characteristics of an individual or group, the study of the mind and behavior in relation to a particular field of knowledge or activity, and a theory or system of psychology” (). Forensic psychology is one of the most popular areas in psychology.
