The debate over animal abusers’ punishment is an occurring problem in the U.S. today. Ordinarily it is rarely talked about because no one wants to deal with the fact that there is a problem. For centuries, some animals have been abused by means of: fighting, neglect and abandonment, shooting, burning by fireworks or fire, torture, and bestiality. In the year 2006, a study was shown to classify the percentages for that year based upon the type of animal abuse. Out of the 8661 animal abuse cases in that year (2006) their percentages were: 7.6%(fighting), 30.1% (neglect and abandonment), 11.7% (shooting), 2.4% (burning), 6.5% (torture), and 1.1% (bestiality). ("Animal Abuse Cases, by Type of Abuse, 2006." Animal Rights. Ed. Kim Masters Evans. Detroit: Gale, 2007. Print.) Animal abuse should be illegal because Scientific research is harmful towards the animals, it is inhumane, and abuse is abuse no matter who it is happening towards. People who mistreat animals, either it be by starvation or abuse, should be sentenced to jail.
During Scientific experiments/research on animals the government has this act, “The Animal Welfare Act” that tells the people that the animals being tested aren’t being harmed, but it says that, “no experiment, no matter how painful or trivial, is prohibited—and painkillers are not even required. Even when alternatives to the use of animals are available, the law does not require that they be used—and often they aren 't. Because the Act specifically excludes rats, mice, birds and cold-blooded animals, more than 95 percent of the animals used in laboratories are not subject to the minimal protections provided by federal laws. Because they are not protected by the law, experimenters don 't even have to provide mic...

... if that was all taken away? How would you feel then? Imagine the world if animal abuse was never stopped. The world would look like it does today only worse. There would be stray animals with their bones showing as they walk down sidewalks in search for some scraps. There would be beaten dogs tied to trees no matter the weather or season, without food or shelter for protection. In science labs, the government tells you that they aren’t being abused or mistreated thanks to the Animal Welfare Act, but who knows what happens in those labs. In the labs, the animals will be poked with needles or tested continuously causing pain and suffering. Consequently, causing death of the test subject. Then the scientist/researcher goes and gets another animal to figure out the cure for a type of disease until that animal can’t take no more, resulting in an endless cycle of death.

Over 100 Million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned and abused in testing Labs every year. Animals are used to test the safety of products, advance scientific research, and develop models to study disease and to develop new medical treatments all for the sake of mankind. Animals should not be used for scientific research because animal testing is inhumane, other testing methods now exist, and animals are very different from human beings.
Millions of Mice, rats, dogs, primates are used in laboratories to test products of all kinds. They are imprisoned in small cages, forced to try new products with results that may have many dreadful or/and painful effects. More than that, animals used for testing are treated badly. For instance, mice and rats are forced to inhale noxious fumes, rabbits are held down by vices and have caustic chemicals applied onto their skin and eye. Some animals develop strange reactions resulting from the loneliness they had to face when in cages; they would shrink in fear every time someone passes by them, they would rock back and forth, pull their own hair, and spin in circles (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA). In the scientific world animals...
Ascione’s (1993) definition of animal cruelty is defined as “socially unacceptable behavior that intentionally causes unnecessary pain, suffering, or distress to and/or death of an animal” exclusive of socially condoned behavior, such as legal hunting and certain agricultural and veterinary practices. Not all violent individuals have been previously cruel to animals but studies have shown that a great number of them have exhibited this behavior. A great majority of the literature calls for a better understandin...
PETA states that, since before the 1920’s there has been animal experimentation. Not until President Lyndon Johnson signed the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act (LAWA) in 1966, animals in the United States had no protection in laboratories, circuses, and zoos over breeding, transportation, housing, feeding, and veterinary care. The LAWA is now called the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). (Williams, and DeMello)
Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
Animals and humans are very different, but one thing we have in common is the fact that we can both feel emotions and comprehend the world in a different perspective. Professor Peter Singer says, “The fundamental issue in determining how we may treat animals is whether they suffer and that the pains of animals and humans deserve equal considerations.” Vertebrates, also know as animals with a backbone, have the same nerves that humans have to feel pain. We have a moral obligation to animals to protect their rights as creatures of this earth and members of our modern day society. Animals have a life full of love and contentment, by torturing them we are denying them that right.
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
Executive Summary Every 60 seconds, an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
The abuse that animals endure at human hands is heartbreaking, sickening, and infuriating. Animals are just as delicate as humans, so why not abuse us too? Animal lives should be just important as ours. No animals should be killed or abused for testing, entertaining, clothing, or hoarding. Every year, millions of animals are being killed and torture for testing.
Animal experimentation is not a reliable form of experimenting because humans and animals have completely different immune systems. Items that humans use for pain suppressants could prove to be very harmful to small animals. For example, several small mice at an unknown non government funded facility were given aspirin although in theory it is said that mice and rats have an immune system similar to that of a human being, the rats used for the testing were unable to handle the level of toxins in the aspirin tablet that a human can handle fairly easily, several of these rats and mice died. The torture of these innocent creatures is another example of corporate greed, which has gotten to the point that harming innocent creatures is considered the best possible and “cheapest” solution.... ...
Animals are used in research to develop new medicines and for scientists to test the safety of the medicines. This animal testing is called vivisection. Research is being carried out at universities, medical schools and even in primary and elementary schools as well as in commercial facilities which provide animal experiments to industry. (UK Parliament) In addition, animals are also used in cosmetic testing, toxicology tests, “defense research” and “xenotransplantation”. All around the world, a huge amount of animals are sentenced to life in a laboratory cage and they are obliged to feel loneliness and pain. In addition scientists causing pain, most drugs that pas successfully in animals fail in humans. It is qualified as a bad science. Above all, animals have rights not to be harmed even though the Animal Welfare Act does not provide them even with minimal protection. The law does not find it necessary to use current alternatives to animals, even if they are obtainable. Animal testing should be banned due to animal rights, ethical issues, alternative ways and the unreliability of test results in humans.
For animal welfare and the causes of animal abuse new research has been created. Since animal abuse is fairly a new subject, new research is constantly brought up. In the Bahamas a study was done in the College of Bahamas, and it states that, “…dogs were equally likely to be considered members of the household in homes without domestic violence,” (Fielding 197). Homes with violence show that humans substitute human victims for animal victims. Animal rights activists are trying to break down symbolic boundaries betw...
Animal abuse is a travesty in our world that must be stopped. Every year, millions of animals suffer because of human actions, directly or indirectly. Whether it’s abused dogs and cats or even mistreated circus animals, their suffering is as real as it would be if it happened to us. Even animals who are raised on farms simply for human consumption should not have to suffer. One of the worst parts of humanity’s role in animal abuse is that there are easy ways for people to help that they are either ignorant of or simply refuse to do. There are many examples of animals who are abused by humans, but there are also ways for people to help prevent and put an end to animal abuse.
