“Pygmy elephants poisoned in Sabah”, “Sun bear and stallion poisoned in Malacca”, “Stray dogs violently killed”, “Kitten sealed in a jar by Johor youths”, animals falling victim to violence, abuse and neglect continue to make headlines in Malaysia (Kugan, 2013). The cruelty to animal or animal abuse is the crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal beyond necessity for normal discipline (Gerald N. Hill and Kathleen T. Hill, 2005). Animal abuse come in many forms, some of the common forms are scientific research, abandonment, neglect and mistreatment. The public awareness on the animal abuse issue can be instil within the Malaysia society through three types of mass media which are broadcast media, print media and the …show more content…

Through the exposure to the truth and relevant factors, it guides the society towards the right path. Traditional media, print media such as book and newspaper serve as best tools to spread awareness in the modern society. The primary function of mass media is to reach out to the people and equip them with information. It also works to scrutinize and observe the surrounding by providing the information in the form of news about the happening in society. For instance, the latest animal abuse news updates in newspaper keep the public up to date about the happenings and follow by the increasing of the public awareness on this issue. The spreading of the correct and true informations helps public to disseminate and interpret information. Print media such as flyers, pamphlets and posters can be given out to the public. There are also many books related to animal abuse topic available in the market such as “Just a Dog: Understanding Animal Cruelty and Ourselves” by Arnold Arluke, “Shiloh” by Paul Griffin and “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen which showed the concern and awareness towards animal abuse issue. Those books serve as good education medium to educate the public to learn to protect the animals and prevent the animal abuse.
