Unfortunately in 1066, the Anglo Saxons were no more after the Normans with France came invaded the country under the leadership of Harold. However, their history, ideologies and beliefs were not forgotten thanks to people like St.Bede who wrote their history. In addition, not only just the writing of history gave insights about the Anglo- Saxon’s culture but epic poems too. One of the prime example of the mirror of Anglo Saxons culture’s ideas is Beowulf. This characteristic is shown the most in Wiglaf. In Beowulf 's last battle, he realizes his true support. When Beowulf was facing the face of death and the dragon was having the upperhand in the battle “none of his comrades came to him” and help him( Cantos 35, line 569-570). In this quote two things are displayed that Anglo Saxons does not encourage which is first cowardliness(them fleeing into the deep woods and not fighting back). Second thing, unloyalty for leaving a wounded comrade in need of your help in battle. Only one person who did what loyal comrades do and stand by each other till the end of the war was Wiglaf. Also, Wiglaf is a grateful person. He remembered everything that Beowulf did for him . In Cantos 36, it states “How his king was suffering, burning. Remembering Everything his lord and cousin had given him”( Canto 36, Line 578-579). Wiglaf expressed his gratitude towards Beowulf for his kindness by risking his own life. That 's why Wiglaf is remember the most of out Beowulf man’s because of his loyalty, faithful and

The Anglo-Saxons were a people who lived in and ruled England from the fifth century AD until the Norman Conquest. They were a people who valued courage and leadership. They lived under kings who were "keepers of gold" and were guarded by their loyal thanes (knights). They were a Pagan culture until the Normandy conquistadors came. They believed in fate and believed the only way to live forever was if you had fame. In the Anglo-Saxon book, Beowulf, there was a combination of many different people. The characters in Beowulf are defined by their status. Their status was in form of their fame and accomplishments. Beowulf was a very famous warrior, who sails to the Danes to kill a monster who is murdering their people. Beowulf kills Grendal, Grendal's mother and a dragon throughout the entirety of the story. Every time he receives more fame and more glory. Beowulf became a king. He was a great king who received honor and loyalty from his men. Although, during the fight with the dragon Beowulf's men run away and as a result Beowulf dies. The book claims that Beowulf had fate against him in his last battle against the dragon, but also says that Beowulf had Christian morals. By having two conflicting religions (paganism and Christianity) it makes the story more interesting. This book is composed of four main characteristics: fame, kingship, fate, and God, which play very important roles throughout the book.
Beowulf (Heaney) is a three part poem about a man, if one can call him a man, with superhuman strength, the ability to swim for eight days straight, breathe underwater, and contest with nightmarish monsters in hand-to-hand combat, just to name a few. He, notably, combats Grendel, a spawn of Cain himself , “Grendel was the name of this grim demon… he had dwelt for a time in misery among the banished monsters, Cain's clan, whom the Creator had outlawed and condemned as outcasts. For the killing of Abel...Cain got no good from committing that murder...and out of the curse of his exile there sprang ogres and elves and evil phantoms and the giants…”

In the present day he should be considered a hero as well. First off, Beowulf shows the characteristic qualities of an Anglo-saxon hero by being selfless. Beowulf would always help everyone and he helped the townspeople by getting rid of Grendel. Beowulf risked his life just to save the people of the town, and he did just that. He took Grendel's life, and ripped his arm off. Another way Beowulf is selfless is that the last thing Beowulf tells Hrothgar is to take care of his men if he dies in battle. His first thought was towards his men and what would happen if he died. Another example of Beowulf's selflessness is when "Beowulf gave a battle-sword to the
Anglo-Saxon women are objects who are gifts to generate a fragile peace. Bloody combat between men attempting to earn fame embodies the Anglo-Saxon era. But does history include women? No, in fact, most women in the epic poem Beowulf are unworthy of even a name. Men trap women as objects; those who rebel become infamous monsters in society’s eyes. Because Anglo-Saxon men view women as objects, they are unable to control any aspect of their lives--no matter if she is royalty or the lowest of all mothers.
I think if I were to compare and contrast the values of modern hero's to those of a hero during the Anglo-Saxon, I would likely find that there was more contrast than comparison. The Anglo-Saxon period, was a time where one was heroic for the battles they would take place in and how big of an impact they would make in that battle.
In Anglo-Saxon culture heroes were determined by their bravery, strength, and glory. In the epic Beowulf, Beowulf is the epitome of an Anglo-Saxon hero because he displays all of these traits. Beowulf exhibits his bravery in the way he fearlessly goes into each of his three battles. He then displays his strength as he defeats each of the monsters. Finally, Beowulf is glorified by his comrades because of his heroic actions. Beowulf is an epic hero because he embodies his people’s ideals of bravery, strength, and glory through his battles.

In history, evil men have reigned supreme across many cultures. Some people say that being evil is inherent in every human. If this is true, then writing may be the ultimate way of releasing hatred of the world without hurting anyone. In Beowulf, all of society's evil men can be personified within the demons of Cain. The main demon presented in Beowulf is Grendel. Grendel personifies the exact opposite of what the Anglo-Saxons held dear. Beowulf, the story's hero, is the embodiment of what every Anglo-Saxon strove to become in their lifetime. Grendel is constantly angry, afraid and unsure of himself; while Beowulf is fearless and loyal to his king.
