The narrator and her lover Peter travel to Sarajevo in Bosnia, Yugoslavia for a holiday to make sure what they have is the real thing. This is the same city where Princip shot the Archduke Ferdinand and the Archduchess, igniting the timber that started World War I. By setting the story in this same historic city, Weldon is drawing parallels between the Princip’s situation and the narrator’s. The narrator is struggling between what is moral and how her actions are going to affect everyone and everything around her. Similarly the Princip also had to decide whether or not to shoot the Archduke. On the other hand, Princip does decide to shoot the Archduke and Archduchess for the love of his country and the results are spending the rest of his life in prison. Through the setting, Weldon places the narrator in geologically in the same place and in the same mindset as Princip makes this huge
Her memoir starts off in Darfur in 2005, where in her late 20’s, she hits rock bottom while managing a refugee camp for 24,000 civilians. It backtracks to her internship in Rwanda, while moving forward to her challenges in Darfur, in addition to her experiences in post- tsunami Indonesia, and post-quake in Haiti. By sharing her story, Alexander gives readers an opportunity to go behind-the-scenes into the devastations that are censored on media outlets. She stresses that these are often the problems that individuals claim they are educated on, but rarely make it their priority to solve. However, that is not the case for Jessica Alexander as she has over 12 years of experience working with different NGO’s and UN operations. As a result, Alexander earns the credibility to critique the multi-billion-dollar humanitarian aid industry. From her painful yet rewarding work experience, Alexander gives an honest and empathetic view of humanitarian aid as an establishment and a
Many times readers lose interest in stories that they feel are not authentic. In addition, readers feel that fictitious novels and stories are for children and lack depth. Tim O’ Brien maintains that keeping readers of fiction entertained is a most daunting task, “The problem with unsuccessful stories is usually simple: they are boring, a consequence of the failure of imagination- to vividly imagine and to vividly render extraordinary human events, or sequences of events, is the hard-lifting, heavy-duty, day-by-day, unending labor of a fiction writer” (Tim O’ Brien 623). Tim O’ Brien’s “How to Tell a True War Story” examines the correlation between the real experiences of war and the art of storytelling. In O’Brien’s attempt to bridge the gap between fiction and non-fiction, the narrator of the story uses language and acts of violence that may be offensive to some.
When the war breaks out, this tranquil little town seems like the last place on earth that could produce a team of vicious, violent soldiers. Soon we see Jim thrown into a completely contrasting `world', full of violence and fighting, and the strong dissimilarity between his hometown and this new war-stricken country is emphasised. The fact that the original setting is so diversely opposite to that if the war setting, the harsh reality of the horror of war is demonstrated.
In “IND AFF, or Out of Love in Sarajevo,” Fay Weldon uses the setting of her story to teach a young woman a lesson in morality, and about life and love. This unnamed young woman narrates the story from the first person point of view, giving the reader a private glimpse into her inner struggle. The young woman is the protagonist in the story, and is a dynamic character; learning and growing in the few pages Weldon gives the reader a chance to get acquainted with her. Setting the story in Sarajevo allows Weldon to use historical events to teach the young woman about life. The largest role that setting plays in “IND AFF” is the historical event, which took place in this small town in Bosnia. An assassin named Princip took the life of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, in Sarajevo. This event is said to have propelled Europe into war, a war that came to be known as World War I. Visiting the town of Sarajevo the young woman ponders Princip’s decision to murder the Archduke and his wife, and these thoughts move her into a different course of action.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are one of the most well known celebrity couples in the World. Angelina, an Oscar-winning actress whose parents were both actors, has made over 100 million dollars in her career. Angelina’s fiancé Brad, an equally successful Golden Globe actor, is considered to be one of the world’s most attractive men. Angelina and Brad first met in late 2004 while filming the 2005 movie “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” in which they co-starred. Angelina has publicly denied that she and Brad were involved while Brad was married even though they quickly began a relationship shortly after his divorce in October of 2005. Film makers use many historical events to spark ideas for a movie. One historical event that is commonly used is war. One advantage a filmmaker has when using war as a movie plot is that there is already a lot of drama in war. This may seem like a good advantage for the filmmaker, however focusing on all of the war drama leaves much of the actual info. When watching a war movie, you may feel like you have an understanding of the war, but when you really compare a war movie to an actual war, you find that there is a lot of factual information left out.
The difficult association between the occurrence of war and storytelling is told through the eyes of Tim O’Brien; he explains that a true war story has a supreme adherence to offensiveness that provides a sense of pride and courage commonly found in storytelling. “The thing about a story is that you dream it as you tell it, hoping that others might then dream along with you, and in this way memory and im...
The Hurt Locker is a war film that is set in Iraq during the Iraq War and fits in the adventure and action genre. The plot is about a three man bomb defusal team consisting of James, Sanborn, and Elridge finding themselves is extreme, life-threatening situations where they must defuse explosives over the violent conflicts. The director, Kathryn Bigelow, has done a good job with the mise-en-scene, making the setting overall extremely believable, giving a sense of realism in the film. The film’s mise-en-scene creates a believable Iraq War settings with the use costumes, weaponry, and all the grime and dirt present in places which sells the idea. Sounds and symbolism is used to show heavy tension amongst the soldiers .The film also contrasts James’s time in Iraq and his life back in America using the Supermarket scene. The idea portrayed in this film is the addiction to war which can be seen in James.
Correlation Between Lessons and Number of Mistakes Made Introduction This experiment has the aim of proving the hypotheses (that I shall develop) by handling data and managing it effectively to instigate realistic results. The hypotheses will be based upon test results from a driving school. Hypotheses: I hypothesize that the number of mistakes made by people will decrese if the number of hours that they spent on lessons increased. This is because more lessons will instigate an increase in driving experience and henceforth reduce the number of mistakes that are made. This is negative correlation.
