Introduction: Roman Civilization
Roman civilization is important in history because it has impacted today’s modern life. The Roman’s impacted modern life in many ways, but this paper will focus on the top four. First, government and laws. Next, the language and alphabet. Third, religion. Last, preservation of earlier culture. All four of these ideas have been influenced by the Romans and impacted the world in so many different ways.
Government and Law
First, the government and laws of Roman civilization is an inspiration for the way the government should be in the United States. The idea of the senate had a great impact. In Rome, the senate ruled for 500 years and eventually became an empire. The idea of veto also began in Roman civilization and we continue to use to this day. Roman officials used a veto to reject and rulings they did not agree with.

The Romans used Latin which enveloped from the Greek’s alphabet. Romans actually cleaned it up and is very similar to today’s alphabet that we use. English was greatly impacted by Latin which the language of the Romans had an even greater impact on the Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Romanians. They have impacted modern life so much that there are 800 million people that speak these languages. The Roman language has inspired the world and is spoken on every continent. Latin led to Western languages such as English using the Latin roots for a foundation.
Religion
Third, religion was spread, Christianity. The Roman Empire was known to spread Christianity. Today, we know Eastern and Western Christians as Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholics. The emperor, Julian the Apostate, tried to bring back the Hellenistic religion but did not succeed as Theodosius I Nicene ruled in 291 and Christianity then became the state church of the Roman Empire.

The Roman Republic, was a government, governed by an intricate constitution, which was based on the idea of separation of powers. The Roman Republic, began in 509 B.C, after the end of the Roman Monarchy and lasted for over 450 years. The constitution of the Roman Republic was highly influenced by the struggle of power between the rich families, the patricians, and other Romans who were not from famous or rich families, the plebeians. Their government was divided into three main sections, very much like the Legislative Branch, Executive, Branch, and Judicial Branch. Nowadays, the Senate and assembly resemble the Legislative Branch. In the Roman Republic, the Senate was the most powerful group. The Senate passed all laws and collected taxes. The second part of this branch, was the assembly, and the assembly was elected by the Romans from the plebeian class. The assembly elected consuls, tribunes (representatives from the plebeian class), and made laws. All members of the Senate were part of the patrician class and at the head of the Senate were two consuls. The Consuls controlled the Roman army and in order to become a consul, you had to be elected by a majority of all the citizens in Rome. The consuls, are like our president and the Executive Branch. The Roman Republic had an upstanding infrastructure, a stable social system, and a balanced constitution that solidified Rome’s greatness. Regardless of its achievements, however, the Roman Republic owes much of its success to classical Greek cultures. These cultures, in conjunction with the fundamental values of Roman society, certified Rome as one of the most significant powers the world has ever seen.
Rome has impacted modern times through so many ways. This immense empire has changed the way we do things nowadays from how they used to be long before today. Roman people used their intelligent minds to create unbelievable inventions that are still used today. Rome has revolutionized political and economic structures throughout the known world by the creation of roads, their architecture, the use of a senate, and many more.
Although both Roman and Greek civilizations shared similarities in the areas of art and literature, their differences were many and prominent. Their contrasting aspects rest mainly upon political systems and engineering progress, but there are also several small discrepancies that distinguish between these two societies. This essay will examine these differences and explain why, ultimately, Rome was the more advanced civilization of the two.

Throughout time, it has been said that the Romans have made some major contributions when it came to Western civilization. A plethora of the contributions were in the categories of the law and engineering. In the law field, Romans left behind a great legacy for Western civilization, for instance one contribution being their Twelve Tables. The Twelve Tables established written rules of criminal and civil law. Not only with the Twelve Tables, but they developed the distinction between public law in which the state is concerned directly and private law which involves disputes between persons, the process of making laws has also had an influence on modern democratic political systems. During the Roman Republic, lawmaking was a bicameral activity and legislation was passed by an assembly of the citizens. It was then approved by the representatives of the upper class, or the senate, and issued in the name of the senate and the people of Rome. Many countries like the United States have adopted the republican Rome as a reproduction for their own governments.
The Roman Empire will always be known as one of the largest, most influential, and most powerful civilizations in history. Ancient Rome gave the world many things essential to our daily lives even today from concrete to sewage systems. Because of the magnitude of Ancient Rome, it’s collapse was a watershed moment in the history of the world. The primary cause of Rome’s fall is widely debated but what is clear is that there were many factors, internal and external, that eventually caused Rome to collapse. The factors which were the most impactful to Rome’s downfall were the rise of Christianity, overexpansion and a failing economy. The largest influence from the Etruscans was on religion. The Etruscans were animist who believed in Divination which is when a person looks for clues in the organs of slaughtered animals. Etruscans would also pay close attention to nature and the weather because they believed that it was the gods communicating with them. If lightning struck a certain area it could be a god trying to send a message that the area is not pleasing him. The Romans adopted this belief and made it their own. They too would often look to the heavens and nature for messages from the gods. Romans also adopted the Etruscan alphabet, which was based on the writings of Greeks, another powerful influence on Rome. The founding of Rome happened during the Archaic age in Greek history. This is a time when Greeks would send their sons out to colonize and find new lands to live. These colonizing Greeks came in contact with the Romans, and introduced many new cultural ideas to them. There were many social, geographical, historical and religious issues prevailing at the time of Christ and all of which were favorable to the spread of Christianity. Geograpicly, Christianity came into being in the Meditation world, the largest of the various centers of civilization at that time. Israel stands almost central to the five continents, dividing the east and west.

The Romans were also the greatest builders of the ancient western world. They created a legacy that proved to be as dominant as it was long lasting and many roman principles are embodied in their modern instructions. The Romans made varies of contributions to the Western Civilization, but a few are the most important of all. Rome was the most important civilization to the Western World. It had left a great legacy behind by paving the road for the spread of Christianity, forming the basis for the republic, and allowing for a widespread diffusion of culture.
Could you imagine life in the United States today without concepts like democracy, libraries, the alphabet, art, philosophy, mathematics and certain architectural features? (Anonemuss, 2010) Everyday life would be completely changed without these innovations as well as many others. So where did we get these ideas from first? Well it dates back to the Greeks and Romans. Many aspects of modern life have been influenced from their cultures, ideas and inventions. Then there is also the question whether classical Greece or classical Rome influenced the contemporary United States more. In my opinion Classical Greece has had more of an impact on our lives. In fact it had been stated that the Greeks are considered the first group of people from ancient civilization in which our society feels like they can connect and relate t. (Kreis, 2000)
