Ancient India’s religion greatly impacted their traditions and way of life. The three main religions of Ancient India were Brahmanism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. These religions are very diverse in many ways. They all are highly diverse in many ways. These religions play a massive role in India’s culture and society. The religion of Brahmanism does not exist today, but it is a huge part of the religion in India. This religion came from an Indo-European group called the Aryans. These people worshiped nature gods and they sacrificed animals in a sacred fire. Brahmanism had a Sanskrit sacred texts called the Vedas. The Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita were where the Indians wrote their history. A belief that one spirit governed the universe was used to explain how the world was made. As you learned in the paragraph before, Hinduism came from Brahmanism. Hindus worshiped many gods, but believed in one supreme god or life force. The most significant and important gods are Brahma, the creator; Vishnu, the protector; and Shiva, the destroyer. The Hindus also believe in reincarnation, the rebirth of a soul in another body. What someone does in their previous life determines what their next life will be like. The sum of a person’s actions in this life, which determines his or her fate in the next life is called karma. The cycle of reincarnation ends when a person realizes their soul is one with god or reaches a perfect understanding, in other words Moksha. Some ways to reach Moksha is following your own individual path which involves one’s job in the caste system. Another way to reach Moksha is to do spiritual practices such as meditation and yoga.
