There have been so many different calendars made in different ways, some wrong, some right. Some have gotten further research to be as accurate as possible. Different ancient groups created different calendars. Most relied upon on the sun and moon to create their calendars, others even used planets such as Venus. Each calendar is unique because it reflects time within their culture.
Article one states, ¨Celestial bodies—the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars—have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout our existence¨ (Source 1). According to article one, the earliest Egyptian calendar was based on the moon’s cycles and phases. The Egyptians made some corrections to their calendar when they found different sources of evidence. In lines 21-23 of article one, it says, ¨later the Egyptians realized that the “Dog Star” in Canis Major, which we call Sirius, rose next to the sun every 365 days, about when the annual inundation of the Nile began¨ (Source 1). The Gregorian Calendar helped the Catholic Church decide their feast days. Once they found out that the Gregorian Calendar was ten days too long, their feast days no longer conformed with the guidelines established by the Council of Nicaea. This is what they decided to do, ¨Pope Gregory XIII (1502-1585), elected in 1572, organized the necessary reform of the calendar¨ (Source 2). They were going to reform the calendar with the help of Luigi Lilius, a Napoleon astronomer. Ancient Pueblo Indians had a great understanding of astronomy. All of the pueblos in the canyon were aligned to match the movements of the sun and moon. Also, they marked their complexes with daggers and spirals to keep up with the moon cycles and sun movements. The film explains that the moon moves north for nearly ten years and then south for about ten years. To fully understand this cycle of the moon, Pueblo people had to study it for years in order to build their Pueblos in relations to it. These calendars were written by honored members of their aristocracy and were held to be of great value. The Spanish invaders believed them to be instruments of the devil and burnt great quantities of them. E. G. Richards explains that only four Mayan books are survive in the libraries of Europe, and one of those—The Dresden codex—suffered severe damage in another fire, one which was inflicted on that city in the Second World War. Throughout the day we are constantly checking the time, preparing for the upcoming months, and keeping track of the year. Clocks tell us the time we use as a measurement. It’s how we keep track of those important months and events, such as holidays and birthdays. Although there are many investigations and research being done on the nature of time, many unresolved issues remain.

The Long Count calendar, also known as the astronomical calendar, (the one that caused all the doomsday panic and prophecies) was used to cover longer periods of time. The Mayans called these long periods of time the “Universal Cycle”. The Mayans believed the universe gets destroyed and is then recreated with the beginning of each universal cycle. This belief is what fuels end of the world prophecies, especially those stemming from the Mayan calendar.

Timekeeping has been an integral part of life ever since humans stepped foot on the earth. Once humans realized the difference between night and day, moon phases were used to determine months, changing seasons and record years. Soon humans realized the connection of time with the sun’s position and started using shadows to keep time thus creating the sundial, used foremost by the Egyptians and Greeks. As life become more complex, so did the need to keep time accurately. Initially, the mechanical clock was invented in 1000 AD. We then graduated to using celestial time and finally the atomic clocks were invented in 1967. These atomic clocks are so efficient that they make other methods of timekeeping seem redundant. Thus we have come a long way in timekeeping and I strongly believe that continuing to use the earth’s rotation around the sun as a method of timekeeping would mean ignoring the advances made in timekeeping over the course of history and moving further back into the past.
