Analyzing the Opening Sequence of the Film Twister
The title of the film is “Twister”. It comes from the action/drama
genre. The director of the film is Jan De Bont. The film “Twister” has
a very short story line but has incredible scenes of special effects.
The film is about the young girl Jo who grows old and becomes
interested in hurricanes because her father died in a hurricane. Jo
and her ex husband Bill who is a meteorologist chase tornadoes. He
decided to give up chasing tornadoes to become a weather man. Bill
gets the divorce papers signed by Jo. But Bill is drawn back to
pursuing tornadoes because Jo decides to use his idea of sensors.
Bill’s idea was tracking tornado activity using small sensors. They
get caught in danger dropping the tub of sensors and escaping out of
the way of the tornado at the last moment.
The opening credits are made up of three shots of titles and one of
the main title. The backgrounds of the titles are dark and gloomy.
Clouds swirl around faster and faster and some lightening. These
features emphasise the gathering thunderstorm. This background runs
throughout the opening credits. The music throughout the opening
credits is a menacing rumble which emphasises the danger, power, force
and something is going to happen. Special effects are used on the main
title. The main title “Twister” appears in large block capital
letters. The letters suddenly disperse like leaves all over the screen
and only the impression of the word remains. This emphasises the
hurricane destroying and blowing away everything in its path. This
gives the viewer an image of the hurricane. These opening credits show

...hut. The strain becomes
terrifying and the door suddenly gives way pulling the father with it
as he disappears in to the twister. The mother and the daughter look
and scream in horror. The daughter runs towards the door way flailing
her arms shouting “daddy, my daddy” the mother pulls the daughter her
back preventing her getting pulled in to the twister. The dog howls
and barks.
The shot is of the mother and the child fades to the next shot which
is of the landscape early the next morning. After the excitement,
tension, and exhilaration of the storm. The shot of the landscape
calms the viewers down because of peacefulness and quietness. The
music dies down to also calm the viewers. This is done so then they
can build the tension up again later because tension cannot be built
up when the viewers are already tense.

The Interrupters is a 2011 film directed by Steve James that speaks volume on inner city violence. This film accurately portrays urban life and issues that arise from it. With brilliant cinematography, this film describes social problems, social norms, and inner city culture and demonstrates it through a strategically written and shot film. The Interrupters was informative, eye opening, touching, and relevant to today’s time. This is true because there is perhaps an even larger violence epidemic in the United States than when the film came out.

Gone with the Wind is a classic fictional love story that depicts life in the old south before, during and after the Civil war. The book was originally written in 1936 by Margret Mitchell, the movie adaptation was released in 1939, directed by Victor Fleming, and staring Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. Ms. Mitchell grew up listening to Civil war stories from confederate veterans. It was reported that they told her everything; everything that is, except that they had lost the war, she found that out when she was 10 years old. Though the book was written 71 years after the Civil War ended, Ms. Mitchell did her research and appears to have drawn inspiration from those childhood stories that she was told. This is apparent in the detailed description of the clothing, houses, and everyday discussions and interactions of the characters throughout the book. Though not all historically correct most of what is in the book is accurate. During the time the movie was released, “damn” was considered to be vulgar and controversial and they used the term “darkies” to describe the slaves.

People flock to horror movies each year. Usually to be scared. Another is to solve the question of Who done it? Unfortunately, a lot of these horror movies fail to scare people or make the killer so obvious the audience gets bored. Occasionally, there are a few horror movies that stick out. Scream, directed by Wes Craven, is one of them. Wes Craven is always toying with the viewer's fears. Always finding ways to scare the audience at every turn. He also plays with the viewer's head, and has them second guessing themselves. How does he do it? Well, as one of the characters in the movie exclaims, "There's a formula to it. A very simple formula. Everybody's a suspect!" This paper will discuss how Craven uses sound, camera shots, and mise en scene
It is on right from the beginning and this is why we notice it first.
Society is a result of our interactions, and society guides our interactions. This all stems from social construction. Social construction conveys values, ideas and traditions. These values, ideals and traditions are created and become traditions that are then passed on. These traditions then come to be perceived as natural rather than cultural, which is often how media will display it and society unknowingly accepts.
Are we human if we don’t have a choice to choose between acting good or acting evil? A Clockwork Orange directed by Stanley Kubrick is a brutal film that entails many sociological meanings. Alex DeLarge and his “droogs” (gang) live in a derange society of “ultra-violence” and rape. Alex and his gang cause havoc around the town that leads to the “droogs” turning on Alex during a mischievous act on an innocent women and Alex getting arrested. While in prison he is chosen for “treatment” that is suppose to purify Alex and turn him into the “perfect citizen”. We’ve gone over many sociological concepts in class, but the three that I believe apply the most to this film are socialization, deviance, and resocialization.
