Brock Toopes Psychology 221 Professor Heintz January 28th 2015 Full Metal Jacket 1. This is a story, told from the protagonists’ viewpoint (Joker), of his recruit training at Parris Island for the United States Marine Corp. and his deployment to Viet Nam during the war. The movie is separated into two different periods of time in his life. The first being boot camp, followed by his a portion of his time in Vietnam. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is the drill instructor of the platoon and is the definition of stereotypical marine drill instructor infused with your worst nightmares about a marine’s drill instructor. As the platoon moves through its basic training, one of the recruits (Leonard) fills the role of a slightly overweight, numbskull who wouldn’t be able to pour water out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel and gets unwanted attention from the cruel, relentless and frightening Gunner Sergeant Hartman. …show more content…
During this night he finds Leonard in the bathroom while he is loading an M14 rifle. At this point it is pretty straightforward that Leonard has gone off the deep end. He starts reciting a military saying over and over again increasing in volume. This causes everyone including Hartman to go checkout the reason for all the commotion. Hartman tries to interfere and take the M14 rifle away from Leonard but in a twist and twirl of events, Hartman ends up getting shot, point blank, in the chest. Merely seconds after this event unfolds Leonard turns the gun on himself places the barrel in his mouth, and blows his brains onto the wall directly behind him. This all happens in front of Jokers, and the rest of the recruits

My Review of Full Metal Jacket In Stanley Kubrick’s film Full Metal Jacket, the emphasis is spotlighted on the carnage of boot camp and the soldier’s life in Vietnam. The life of a soldier is not an easy one, as it requires great diligence and much sacrifice to ensure the safety and freedom to all those who are afraid and those who seek it. Stanley Kubrick makes sure that we see the harshness and ugliness of the Vietnam War as it was made to be seen. The movie starts with the life of boot camp, getting marines ready to be sent and fight over in Vietnam. The relationship between Private Joker and Private Pyle appears when the Drill Sergeant Hartman makes Private Joker the squad leader. Private Joker, is to make certain that Gomer Pyle cleans his act up and bring an end to the burdens that Pyle has put on the whole squad. Although Private Joker is trying his best to clean up the Private Pyle’s mess, he has met his match, and ultimately sees Pyle as a problem. During the scene where everyone in the squad prepares to beat Pyle with bars of soap wrapped in towels it shows that Private Joker is somewhat hesitant at first, but eventually hits Private Pyle multiple times with heavy blows. Analyzing the relationship between the two privates can be said that Private Joker was trying to help Private Pyle as much as he could, until Private Pyle suddenly breaks and it is made clear when Private Pyle is talking to himself while he is cleaning his rifle. Yes boot camp can be living hell for those who are psychologically unfit and not able to cope during times of great stress, and this can often make certain people “snap”. Stanley Kubrick does a fine job focusing on the stresses of boot camp, especially as this is a time of war and thousands of ...
Unresponsive to Hartman's discipline, Pyle is eventually paired with Joker. Pyle improves with Joker's help, but his progress halts when Hartman discovers a contraband jelly doughnut in Pyle's foot locker. Believing the recruits have failed to improve Pyle, Hartman adopts a collective punishment policy: every mistake Pyle makes will earn punishment for the rest of the platoon, with Pyle being spared. In retaliation for Pyle's failures, the platoon hazes him with a blanket party, restraining him in his bunk while beating him with bars of soap wrapped in towels. After this incident, Pyle reinvents himself as a model Marine. This impresses Hartman but worries Joker, who recognizes signs of mental breakdown in Pyle, such as him talking to his M14 rifle.

Paramount and DreamWorks Pictures joined together and produced an American war film in 1998 called Saving Private Ryan. The movie was about how Captain John Miller and his men go through extreme measures to find Private James Ryan, whose three brothers have been killed in combat. This book substantially explains the vigorous training platoon 3086 went through in order to earn the title of being a Marine.
Brown was separating the food into equal portions for the soldiers to eat, he stood up to get a spoon and “in an instant his head snaps back viciously from the impact of the bullet” (33). Brown was killed right in front of his fellow soldiers, his friends. Not only was this a bad thing for Brown, but it must have been terrible as his friends to watch him die. Finally, others are in terrible pain before they die. The soldiers went into enemy territory for a raid, Renaud, a new recruit, was hit by the flame-thrower, “His shrieks are unbearable…
In Hollywood there is also a lack of representation with executives because the most of the power resides in people that are ethnically white. Brent Lang and Dave McNary believe that black films are usually not picked up by studios because very few people in powerful positions are black. Therefore, most studios don’t understand what would appeal to black audiences. This causes analysts to undervalue the potential profit of black films, turning executives away from being interested in pursuing black film projects. Examples of black movie profits far exceeding predictions are found in this quote from their article , How Tracking Fails Diverse Movies: “"Straight Outta Compton 's" $60.2 million debut was roughly $20 million more than most trade publications had predicted. "War Room," a faith-based drama about the power of prayer, more than doubled predictions with its $11.3 million launch. And last weekend 's champ, Sony 's "Perfect Guy," exceeded expectations by nearly $15 million when it kicked off with $29.4 million” (Lang and McNary). The history between black and whites in America come into play with the existence of a phenomenon called the “Hollywood plantation arrangement” which alludes to the relationship of black slaves and white slaveowners pre-civil war. This idea describes how “the relationship between African Americans and White Americans is rooted in a tradition of ownership, guidance, and responsibility” which “directly influences African Americans’ ability to access economic power and ownership, thereby limiting creative control and cultural protection (Ndoubou 7). The ruling class, which in Hollywood is the whites, use their power to maintain control by creating these images in media that make the blacks seem lesser...
Hartman's tactics of reducing the civility of the recruits reinforce Gyori's theory of the killer code, which states that people are transformed into machines to devoid them of their humanity in order to get them to kill. By not only denying them of their identities, but also of their humanity, Hartman deprives them of self worth. The opening scene of Full Metal Jacket, discomforts viewers; they respond negatively its brutish and offensive
