Between the years 1965 and 1975 the United States went into the Vietnam War to try and prevent the spread of communism to the rest of Asia. The president at the time, Lyndon B. Johnson, made some questionable decisions regarding the military and our country. He sent troops into South Vietnam to fight and they barely knew what was going on, so a draft started. Everybody did everything they could to avoid the draft and stay safe at home until the U.S. started getting affected. The Vietnam War had many immense impacts that included the United States society and economy, but not as big of an impact on politics. Due to the war 18% more money went from education funding to the military, this happened to be about $49.86 billion dollars of a difference between war and education. As the time of the war increased, so did the funding to the, no matter who was fighting it. The chart on document 4 shows the war spending increase in 1968 as our military presence increased, but in 1973 when the U.S. started pulling out the funding remained at around $90 billion dollars due to funding from the South Vietnamese(Doc 4). The U.S. increasing presence meant an increase in funds but realizing how bad the war was and continuing to pull out, they remained to fund the South Vietnamese military. The war did harm the country economically for a period of time and debt that is still being paid off, but politically nothing was permanently harmed. In politics, during the war the only thing majorly harmed was the voting numbers as Americans did not know what to believe.
