The construction last year of a shopping mall in downtown Oak City was a
mistake. Since the mall has opened, a number of local businesses have closed, and the
downtown area suffers from an acute parking shortage. Arrests for crime and vagrancy
have increased in nearby Oak City Park. Elm City should pay attention to the example of
the Oak City Mall and deny the application to build a shopping mall in Elm City.
Analyzing this argument brings up a lot of questions to whether this is a relevant
argument or not. A lot of assumptions are made without enough facts to support them. It
can be said that the mall could have directly or indirectly been a part of the problems.
The problems are: Increase in crime and vagrancy, businesses closing, and a parking
shortage. It is not logical to say that it is sole cause of the situation.
This argument states that the building of the mall is the reason that some
businesses have went out of business. To say that the mall and the closes of the
businesses go hand in hand is not totally accurate.
There are a number of reasons that could have led to the closing of the businesses.
For one example, you could say that a change in the economy might have led to the
closures. If this occurred after the holidays, it could say that people spent most of their
money during this time and it could have hurt some businesses beyond the point of
repair. Also, this argument doesn?t state what kinds of businesses had troubles. If it was
something as in a grocery store, the mall could not be the cause because the mall doesn?t
interfere directly with the food industry.
Also, a majority of small businesses succumb to larger ones. This area is not
exempt to the possibilities that this is what could have happened. This argument does not
state if mergers of smaller companies related to the statement.
The argument tries to tie together that a parking shortage was caused by the Oak
City Mall. While in turn the mall would bring increased foot traffic, it would also bring
along more commerce to the city, thus businesses should not have struggled as previously
mentioned. A number of factors could have added to the parking shortage. With most
communities now, population increases every year.
It is important to include cultural issues in the helping process to be more effective. We also need cultural competence because the U.S. is becoming more diverse. Therefore with diversity comes different beliefs, norms, and values. Eurocentric values dominate sciences and began cultural universals which puts the clash of dominate and non-dominate cultural behaviors in motion. In 1996 the NASW Code of Ethics increased the recognition of cultural competence. It is important to know diversity exist within ethnic and cultural groups because social workers need to know that relationships between helping professionals and clients may be strained. This happens because of the distrust between groups. Another important aspect is that the professional realizes their own values, biases, and beliefs. The reason for this is because they must value diversity to start with and understand the dynamics of difference. Culturally competent practitioners have to go through developmental process of using their own culture as a starting point to meet all behaviors. Striving for cultural competence is a long term process of development. The literature on cultural competence is theoretical and conceptual. They have not been evaluated in a systematic way. Roughly there are 2 million Native americans in the U.S. Which survive decimating disease, over-repressed in child welfare system, suffer from health problems, and are among the poorest people in the United States. Culture can be defined as behaviors exhibited by certain racial, religious, social or ethnic groups. Some factors in which culture may vary include: family structure, education, and socioeconomic status (Kodjo, 2009). Some may think cultural competence is something that has an end point, however, when the big picture is seen, it is a learning process and journey. From the writer’s perspective, the client-therapist relationship can be challenging. Culturally competent therapists must realize that behaviors are shaped by an individual’s culture. Many changes are taking place within the United States cultural makeup. Therapists and healthcare professionals are being challenged to provide effective and sensitive care for patients and their families. This type of culturally sensitive care requires the professional to be open and seek understanding in the patients diverse belief systems (Kodjo, 2009).
Understanding culture is an important aspect of being a social worker; this does not mean learning common cultural traits is of great significance to the social work profession. “Consider the second-generation Japanese-American social worker whose practice consists of Mexican-American and African-American families. Memorizing national traits or cultural rituals would be interesting and informative, but ultimately these would be an inaccurate basis on which to “know” these particular families” (Dorfman, 1996, p. 33). The healthcare system within America reflects increasing numbers of cultural diversity and awareness. According to Holloway (2004), cultural awareness is defined as the deliberate, cognitive process by which health care providers become appreciative of and sensitive to the values, beliefs, practices, and problem solving strategies of the clients’ cultures. Cultural awareness include an examination of one’s personal biases. In order to understand cultural diversity, individuals must strive to acknowledge the prejudices they may already hold toward different cultures. On the other hand, cultural competence is a process through which health professionals can integrate their knowledge and skills to improve culturally effective interactions with clients (Tjale & Villiers, 2004).

Managers in the more profitable regions were achieving/surpassing their sales goals, while managers in the less active regions were unable to achieve their sales goals. These underperforming managers were penalized by a system that they neither fostered nor developed. In all likelihood, the underperforming managers were disincentivized by unrealistic budgetary goals for their region, needing further assurances from corporate that their vision could be achieved. All retail stores suffered from a lack of product, destroying the potential sales that they could have gained. The stores in less popular/populated regions may have garnered a reputation for being unreliable and continually out of stock.

In this essay I would like to explain how William Shakespeare makes the change in Othello so dramatic for the audience in Act 3 Scene 3 of the play, but before I go in detail I would like to go over the main points in the play for you. So, basically what happens is that there is a tragic downfall of a ‘black Venetian general’ Othello who was a ‘confident’ and ‘strong’ person but because he chose Cassio as his lieutenant, Iago gets really ‘jealous’ because he thought he deserved that title more than Cassio and he really wanted that title. Iago then cleverly plans to ‘destroy’ Othello and Cassio as Iago is known as a ‘friendly’ person his plan might be easier but there is one person only who is Roderigo who knows about the real Iago but Iago doesn’t have to be worried because Roderigo is stupid and can be fooled easily. Roderigo knows because he likes Desdemona but she doesn’t know that, she loves Othello and they married in secret with only Cassio knowing about their secret marriage and Iago fools Roderigo to give money saying that Desdemona would be his. Iago and Roderigo actually see them marrying each other. This is where Iago gets his good opportunity to destroy both Cassio and Othello. After we see that Iago tells Roderigo to tell Desdemona’s father Brobantio that Othello and Desdemona are getting married and Brobantio is in rage to kill Othello but he manages to convince not only Brobantio but the Duke as well. The Merced mall leans towards more the negative side of the city and is quite noticeable since the sign of the mall seems to have never been changed since its establishment in 1969. This is interesting enough in itself because looking back at this previous election for mayor Mike Murphy (5) who promised to improve the Merced mall by remodeling and bringing in better stores, but we are still living with shopping areas that are all brought together by the main stores Target, Sears, JCPenney and Kohl's. It is more of strip mall rather than a real on like the Vintage Faire mall located in Modesto a larger neighboring city. The Merced Mall is located on the city's northwest side of the city near the 99 which includes Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, and several restaurants that are not located in the same facility, but within a relative walking distance that noted in my mental maps. Cultural Competency is “the process by which individuals and systems respond respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures languages, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, religions, and other diversity factors…” (Sue 24). In order to be culturally competent there are many factors that you must be knowledgeable about and practice in everyday interactions. Some of which include “understanding culture and its function in human behavior and society, ...have a knowledge base of their clients cultures and be able to demonstrate competence…, and obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression” (NASW 1999). I will have to know how to understand, interact with, and find the best possible solution for those who are both in my culture and those who come from many other cultures along with socio-economic backgrounds. As I was reading the introduction to Chapter two in our assigned textbooks I could not help but relate with what the content in the book started out at. Saying that all social workers must understand the perspectives of all people gets really overwhelming, especially when starting your path learning about social work. I felt like no person could be completely culturally competent because of the fact that you had to display being accepting and understanding and actually mean it.
