Analysis on MLA Citations
Professors often expect students to use certain formats and conventions when writing academic research papers. There are several different ways to format a paper, but most require and follow the guidelines established by the Modern Language Association (MLA). It is commonly used to cite sources within the liberal arts and humanities (Purdue). Learning how to format a citation within a research paper is a very important skill for success in college, it can mean the difference between a successful and ill conceived paper. By analyzing the rules and processes for creating a proper and effective work cited page can create a better understanding and a reference point for new writers.
When writing in MLA Style, one is required to refer to the work of others in their own text. It can be done by using parenthetical citation, it is defined as a source that happens to be quoted in an essay coming after a quote or paraphrase. It is important to know that within in text citation must correspond with the sources cited within a work cited page. When writing in MLA format follow the author page method of in-text citation (Purdue). Add the authors last name and page numbers from where you can find the information in the source, it tells the reader where that specific information ins found. For Print sources like books, magazines, scholarly journal articles, and newspapers, provide a signal word or phrase and a page number. APA uses parenthetical (or in-text) citations within sentences, but rather than indicating the author's name and page number, APA includes author's name and date of publication. The page number, represented with a p. or a pp., is only added to the citation when using a direct quote (not a summary or paraphrase). If the author's name is mentioned in the sentence, then place the date of publication in parentheses directly after the name. If the name is not mentioned include the author's name and date in parentheses at the end of the source material. And, if you use a direct quote, place the page number after the publication date within the parentheses. Note the difference between the following three examples:
Other than learning how to argue (my boyfriend loves my new ability) I learned how to source my research using MLA format. This new skill is tremendously important in college because most professors, if not all, require their papers to be submitted using MLA format. Throughout my upcoming years at Valencia and then The University of Central Florida I will find writing papers significantly easier because sourcing will be practically second nature. In class we were taught how to use the in-text reference throughout our papers, build our own citation and how to set up our work cited page. Although in high school we used the MLA format for papers, prior to taking this class I hadn’t noticed how many small details go into the actual citation, the authors name is last name then first name, the commas must be in the proper place, page numbers etc. In some classes you “learn” how to do things however it is only stored in short term memory because you don’t consider it an important attribute or useful for future classes. Personally, I made sure I knew how to do MLA, every aspect of it, I reviewed the rules, did my assignments, and then reviewed my assignments in order to store this new skill in long term memory. By doing this I have successfully transferred the information to long term memory and made it into a skill.
2. Also when quoting you must always place in parentheses the name of the author and the page on which the quote can be found. This way your readers can look up the quotes for themselves.
The paper must use APA style and formatting; formal writing; a minimum of THREE sources and THREE in-text citations – but as many as are required by your quotes; every idea or fact that comes from a source other than yourself must be fully cited on the References page and have correct APA-style, in-text citations within
I use three scholarly articles for my essay in which I cited per MLA guidelines and created a separate Works Cited page that includes all the sources I used. In addition to citing and quoting direct lines I used from the story and articles, I appropriately cited general ideas in my essay that were not a direct quote but came from the story. I not only use two scholarly articles that I analyzed to support my claims throughout the essay, I challenge the main idea in another scholarly article that the death of the narrator’s daughter is what brings the brothers together. Arguing that Sonny’s drug addiction, not the death of Grace, is what brought the brothers back

MLA, in which this essay has been written, is most commonly used in the study of literature and humanities. This is because of a variety of factors within the format that allow the author to display their information in a fashion that seamlessly flows. APA, unlike MLA, labels when the topic or subject
After all, learning citation properly is far more than learning a set of rules, a style, the correct placement of commas and capital letters. Learning citation is first and foremost learning how a discipline creates and disseminates knowledge. It is subtle, takes many years to master, and is the mark of a professional.

All I had ever known was MLA so it was quite a shock when I found out I would have to learn how to cite in APA. The first thing I did when I found out how we were going to cite our papers was go to Easybib to have the website to it for me. Turns out Easybib wants you to pay them if you want your sources cited in APA format. Once I found that out I scoured the web to find a website that could do it for me. I could not find a dependable site anywhere so I had to go look in the english book on how to cite. When I got to the section on citing sources in my book I realized that this is where I should have went right from the start. The book had every type of citation you would ever have to use. But even after I found out how to properly cite my sources, it was still another question for me

In this course so far, the most important thing I have learned in this first lesson was how to properly format your paper in MLA style. In previous classes that I took in high school, we never had a proper format in our rubrics for any of our numerous essays throughout the years. I understand that in this course
