Analysis of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra
The most influential writer in all of English literature, William Shakespeare was born in 1564 to a successful middle-class glove maker in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare attended grammar school, but his formal education proceeded no further. In 1582 he married an older woman, Anne Hathaway, and had three children with her. Around 1590 he left his family behind and traveled to London to work as an actor and playwright. Public and critical acclaim quickly followed, and Shakespeare eventually became the most popular playwright in England and part-owner of the Globe Theater. His career bridged the reigns of Elizabeth I (ruled 1558–1603) and James I (ruled 1603–1625), and he was a favorite of both monarchs. Indeed, James granted Shakespeare’s company the greatest possible compliment by bestowing upon its members the title of King’s Men. Wealthy and renowned, Shakespeare retired to Stratford and died in 1616 at the age of fifty-two. At the time of Shakespeare’s death, literary luminaries such as Ben Jonson hailed his works as timeless.
Shakespeare’s works were collected and printed in various editions in the century following his death, and by the early eighteenth century his reputation as the greatest poet ever to write in English was well established. The unprecedented admiration garnered by his works led to a fierce curiosity about Shakespeare’s life, but the dearth of biographical information has left many details of Shakespeare’s personal history shrouded in mystery. Some people have concluded from this fact and from Shakespeare’s modest education that Shakespeare’s plays were actually written by someone else—Francis Bacon and the Earl of Oxford are the two most popular -candidates—but the support for this claim is overwhelmingly circumstantial, and the theory is not taken seriously by many scholars.
In the absence of credible evidence to the contrary, Shakespeare must be viewed as the author of the thirty-seven plays and 154 sonnets that bear his name. The legacy of this body of work is immense. A number of Shakespeare’s plays seem to have transcended even the category of brilliance, becoming so influential as to affect profoundly the course of Western literature and culture ever after.
Scholars believe that Shakespeare wrote Antony and Cleopatra in 1606, immediately after Macbeth, and it is o...

Cleopatra’s Fleeing Ships
The image of Cleopatra’s fleeing ships is presented twice in the play. Antony twice does battle with Caesar at sea, and both times his navy is betrayed by the queen’s retreat. The ships remind us of Cleopatra’s inconstancy and of the inconstancy of human character in the play. One cannot be sure of Cleopatra’s allegiance: it is uncertain whether she flees out of fear or because she realizes it would be politically savvy to align herself with Caesar. Her fleeing ships are an effective symbol of her wavering and changeability.
The Asps
One of the most memorable symbols in the play comes in its final moments, as Cleopatra applies deadly snakes to her skin. The asps are a prop in the queen’s final and most magnificent performance. As she lifts one snake, then another to her breast, they become her children and she a common wet nurse: “Dost thou not see my baby at my breast, / That sucks the nurse asleep?” (V.ii.300–301). The domestic nature of the image contributes to Cleopatra’s final metamorphosis, in death, into Antony’s wife. She assures him, “Husband, I come” (V.ii.278).
Changing social habits of a contemporary society have seen Cleopatra depicted in many different ways. Whilst few artefacts remain of the true image of Cleopatra, we see from her portrait on the coins (Fear, 2008, p, 21 Fig 1.4) that despite being no legendary beauty, she had the power to captivate two of the greatest Romans of her time. Cleopatra consummated her union with Julius Caesar, which strengthened her grip on the throne, following his assassination; she formed alliance with Mark Antony, in opposition to Octavian, a coalition that would lead to her downfall as both Antony and Cleopatra’s combined forces would be defeated against Octavian in the battle of Actium in 31 BCE. (Fear, 2008, p.7)
Over the past few decades, there's been controversy over whether or not Shakespeare is the real author of his plays. Shakespeare is famously known for his work including, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar. Throughout his work it is clear to see his originality and his extensive education. Some people may use this against him and say that it is impossible for someone of his status to write so greatly about politics and be able to use such character. Through stylometry, proof of his education, the actors, and the death of one of the alleged authors, it is proven that Shakespeare is, in fact, the real and rightful owner of his work.
In countries all over the globe the name William Shakespeare brings to mind literary genius, a character so famed in eloquence and creativity that none other comes close to him in prestige. Yet for centuries scholars, students and readers have argued a very fundamental question: whether or not the plays and poems attribute to William...
In 1564, a man was born by the name of William Shakespeare. He was born to a poor family, was given little education, and had no interaction with sophisticated society. Thirty-eight plays and over 150 sonnets are not attributed to this ignorant man. Those who believe that Shakespeare was the author have no definitive proof but instead point to Hamlet’s declaration: "The play’s the thing(Satchell 71)." The true author, however, lies hidden behind he name of Shakespeare. Edward de Vere the premier Earl of Oxford is not only considered a great poet in history, but he may also be the great playwright who concocted the sonnets and plays which are now attributed to William Shakespeare of Stratford, England.
“William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was and English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist” (vodppl.upm.edu 2). He was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK, he also passed away in his hometown. “When Shakespeare died in 1616 the event was barely noticed” (Epstein 7). “Shakespeare’s family was initially prosperous but began having financial difficulties in the 1570’s” (Allen 325). “Shakespeare gained his education by attending the local grammar school, King’s New School, where the curriculum stressed a classic education of Greek mythology and roman comedy”(shakespeareinamericancomunites.org 1). He never carried his educational career to a higher level as in a university. “William Shakespeare was not recognized as an actor, poet, and playwright until 1592” (Allen 346).
Shakespeare's use of time in Anthony and Cleopatra is seemingly [1] quite erratic. However, it is important to note that Shakespeare was a playwright and his job was to write interesting drama, not to accurately record details of history.
Although William Shakespeare is considered to be one of the most revered and well-renowned authors of all time, controversy surrounds the belief that he actually produced his own literary works. Some rumors even go so far as to question the reality of such a one, William Shakespeare, brought on by paralleling the quality of his pieces with his personal background and education. With such farfetched allegations, it persuaded others to peek into the person we all are taught to learn as “Shakespeare”, but who is actually the person behind these genius works of literary promise and enlightenment? To some, Shakespeare is as much accredited to his works as frequently as you see his name placed. To others, Shakespeare is a complex enigma into which we the people are supposed to unravel; the true author behind a falsely-given pseudonym. The debate pertaining to the true authorship of William Shakespeare’s works are still questioned in today’s society.

There is an appeal to dualism that religion and popular culture addresses, that is, we exist independent of the body. It addresses our common sense; the self is not the body, but our consciousness and if you change the body we are still ourselves. We can imagine being in a different body, but we cannot imagine being a different consciousness. We act within the physical world and we can act within our own minds, independent of the physical universe. The benefit to a dualist belief
The mind-body problem is a philosophical debate that can be approached by simple questions: what is the relationship between mind and body? Accordingly, what is the relationship between mental assets and physical assets? When examining the mind-body problem there are three fundamentals that should be considered: the subject as an observer of both the external and internal world; the conditions of observation that include certain external and internal tactics of observation; and the observed object or entity (Vacariu, 2011: p. 26). The two debatable theories of the mind-body problem are dualism and monism. In the most general sense, dualism supports the idea of a separate mind from the body with the possibility of differing physical and mental
Performance enhancing drugs have made the headlines for several years now and while their effects and testing procedures are still being debated, they are leaving a harmful psychological effect to future generations in sports. The effects of the attitudes on the usage of PEDs are going to affect the next generations’ attitudes toward their sports and their own capabilities. Currently athletes in all sports are testing their ability to use these PEDs to increase their bodily abilities and their sports’ acceptance not only of their new bodies but also their performances that they are exceeding in. Some sports authorities and media are turning a blind eye and others are being slow in their decisions to regulating and penalizing
When athletes take drugs to get high or have fun it is called recreational use (Meer 22). All athletes do this to relieve the pressure that they are under during a game or whatever the sport they are participating in. This is by far the most common use for drugs in sports in the world today because of its relaxing effects. Performance enhancing drugs, PEDs, are available from multiple sources to enhance the performance of athletes (Meer 22-23). PED’S are the safest type of drugs for use by an athlete wanting to use, all in all, they have more positive effects on health than that of other drugs that are used. From the high school to collegiate level PED’s are the most commonly used. Athletes are even known to take painkillers to numb the repeated abuse on their bodies (Meer 24). Athletes can take this anytime of the day without anyone finding out. Being able to take this type of drugs makes without anyone finding can also make these types of drugs addictive. Painkillers are common for older athletes for the fact that they can get a hold of them easier than a younger athlete can. In some case athletes must take these drugs to help them make it through the day or even to sleep at
Children with a provocative appearance are opening a gateway for sexual predators. In these competitions young girls are judged off their looks. They are spray tanned, wearing a lot of make-up, fake teeth and lashes, hair extensions, waxed eyebrows, wearing padded bras, high heels, and outfits that are inappropriate. The drug abuse is the most significant concern among the American people today. As sports are a microcosm of life, drug abuse may now be the greatest problem faced by the athletic community. It has been suggested that the incidence of drug abuse is no greater in sports than in the general population. We are only more acutely aware of it because of the extreme visibility of athletes. The rash of suspensions due to drug testing violations in the NFL recently suggests that its occurrence may be significant and increasing. The widespread use of drugs in professional sports deserves special attention by everyone within and outside of the sports world because of the very exposur...
