In You Hated Spain, Hughes explores the character of a woman and her relationship with her husband. You Hated Spain is set during the honeymoon of Plath and Hughes and is part of Hughes’ collection of poems titled Birthday Letters. Plath’s suicide was the result of a forced breakdown of communication with Hughes. Hughes’ use of free verse and enjambement creates a natural progression of thoughts. The autobiographical, ‘letter-writing’ genre suggests that these poems are a form of therapy, used to communicate Hughes’ unresolved feelings to a fictional Plath. You Hated Spain, St. Botolph’s and 55 Eltisley, along with the other poems in the volume depict the timeline of Plath’s and Hughes’ tumultuous marriage. The collection as a whole is an intimate elegy and celebration of Plath’s life and poetry.
Hughes illustrates the woman as fearful of Spain and emphasises the distance between the woman and her husband. Hughes uses personal pronouns and imagery to convey this. Hughes describes how “...the African Black edges to everything, frightened you.” The noun “edges” is premodified by “African” and “Black”. “African” provokes ideas of foreign, mysterious and uncivilised. “Black” connotes death, darkness, mysterious and evil. In the 1950s, Africa was seen as a wild and exotic continent. These images contrast starkly with Plath’s upbringing in an enclosed and civilised America. The alliteration of “edges” and “everything” is used to convey how she cannot escape Spain as her fear is everywhere. We have such fun...” Despite Hughes’ subjective approach, his work is enlightening as it provides a contrasting perspective and suggests there was a darker side to both their honeymoon and of Plath. However, critic Marc Berley thinks that Birthday Letters “is a failure”. He argues that it fails to provide knowledge; it only attempts to heighten the drama of their relationship.

The purpose of this essay is to highlight the issues that Dana, a young African-American writer, witness as an observer through time. As a time traveler, she witnesses slavery and gender violation during 19th and 20th centuries and examines these problems in terms of how white supremacy disrupts black familial bonds. The mother's approach is a source of terror for the child, written as if it is a horror movie, suspense created with the footsteps, the physical embodiment of fear, the doorknob turns. His terror as 'he tries to run' but 'her large hands hold him fast' is indicative of his powerless plight. The phrase, 'She loves him...' reiterates that this act signifies entrapment as there is no reciprocation of the ‘love’. It is ironic that her love is deemed 'the frightening fact'. Clearly this form of love will destroy his innocence, his freedom to think for himself, his ability to achieve emotional fulfilment. We sense the overpowering, suffocating nature of this form of love, but also the nature of American cultural imperialism, which is similarly stifling to the development of national identity and fulfilment.
Detrimental stereotypes of minorities affect everyone today as they did during the antebellum period. Walker’s subject matter reminds people of this, as does her symbolic use of stark black and white. Her work shocks. It disgusts. The important part is: her work elicits a reaction from the viewer; it reminds them of a dark time in history and represents that time in the most fantastically nightmarish way possible. In her own words, Walker has said, “I didn’t want a completely passive viewer, I wanted to make work where the viewer wouldn’t walk away; he would either giggle nervously, get pulled into history, into fiction, into something totally demeaning and possibly very beautiful”. Plath never got over the loss of her father and her failed marriage to well known poet Ted Hughes. She wrote, "Me, I never knew the love of a father, the love of a steady blood-related man after the age of eight .... I hated men because they didn't stay around and love me like a father" (cited in Hughes & McCullough, 1982, pp. 266267). Summary: In Claude Pruitt’s article on Sula, Pruitt describes the circular meaning of the text using her own perceptions and the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Ralph Ellison’s the Invisible Man. Pruitt reads the text in circles and circles to find the subtext which she believes provides for its meaning. Pruitt’s article discusses how Morrison circles around the subject of the text to showcase the culturally focused discretions displayed in the 1900’s. She mentions the “nigger joke” that Morrison includes at the beginning of the book (4). This showcases the racism displayed in the 1900’s. The “nigger joke” proclaims the bottom’s relationship with the white people who live outside their society. Pruitt also mentions that if the reader were not to come to this conclusion after the “nigger joke” was presented he/she would come to the realization that racism was prevalent in the 1900’s by the social and economic status of the bottom. The soil on which the people of the bottom live on is not considered productive land while the white land is plentiful and rich. Their place of living causes them economic and social distress. Focusing on place, referencing time and location, Pruitt displays how Morrison’s text ultimately shows how the individual does not create their identity but inside and outside their community their identity becomes created. The struggling characters grapple between their cultural identity and acknowledging the emerging cultural fusion.
Federico García Lorca’s poem “La casada infiel” depicts the story of a gypsy who makes love to a married woman on the shore of a river. When looking deeper into the poem, Lorca appears to provide a critical observation on the values of the conservative society at the time in which he lived. The woman, at her most basic reading, is treated as an object, elaborating on the sexist values in society at the time. Lorca addresses issues of sexism as well as issues of sexuality within society mainly through the poem’s sexist narrative voice, objectification of the female character and overriding sense of a lack of desire throughout the poem. His achievement to do so will be analysed throughout this commentary with particular attention to Lorca’s use of poetic techniques such as diction, personification and imagery.
During the struggle to rise to a higher social class, many African Americans have chosen to embrace white ideals while rejecting their heritage and anything that associates one with their “blackness” This type of rejection to one’s culture has been shown many times in African American literature. In “The Wife of His Youth,” by Charles Chesnutt, and Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, the authors use their writing to show this disconnection; both Chesnutt and Ellison are able to capture the struggle and help their characters to overcome it by embracing their pasts, which can be a very difficult ideal in African American heritage.
In paragraph three of James Baldwin's 'Stranger in the Village' (1955), he alludes to emotions that are significant, dealing with conflicts that arise in the Swiss village. Of these emotions are two, astonishment and outrage, which represent the relevant feelings of Baldwin, an American black man. These two emotions, for Baldwin's ancestors, create arguments about the 'Negro' and their rights to be considered 'human beings' (Baldwin 131). Baldwin, an American Negro, feels undeniable rage toward the village because of the misconception of his complexion, a misconception that denies Baldwin human credibility and allows him to be perceived as a 'living wonder' (129).
