The book Memories, Dreams, and Reflections features Jung's childhood, his personal life, and exploration into the psyche in association with religion as well. Jung reveals much of life experiences and acquaintances that were forged throughout his life. Aside from self-reflections, thoughts, and ideas, Jung also offers recall of early memories—childhood dreams, visions, in connection with his adulthood. Although Jung was not without his faults, he ponders on his weaknesses, some that he accepted and worked with—dipping into the unconsciousness (darkness) to find meaning. Similar to prior readings, Jung also attempts to find meaning in his own life, "meaninglessness inhibits fullness of life and is therefore the equivalent to illness.” Furthermore, Jung states that people are childish and they have to be guided through religion in order to adapt to reality. Therefore, religious enlightenment is necessary to promote healthy well-being of humankind. “How are they ever to emerge if analysis does not make them aware of something different or better?” questions Jung.
After reading the chapters from Jung, the elephant in the room cannot be ignored. Based on what I’ve gathered Jung forged a friendship with Freud for personal gains. Freud anticipated his “death” before it occurred, in the metaphorical sense; publication of Jung’s chapter “The Sacrifice” which Jung lied to Freud about when questioned about death and death wishes. Coincidentally, once Jung obtained the knowledge he sought by befriending Freud, the publication resulted negatively for Jung despite not adhering to Freud’s request: strong emphasis on sexuality with the unconscious. Jung’s subjective nature as well his speculative beliefs in his experiences attempts to discover the relation between objective truth (real), psychology, and spirituality (supernatural). He placed tremendous value on the meaning of personal and collective dreams. Jung considered them prophetic and visionary for the collective nature. To answer the set question I will explore Freud’s Totem and Taboo looking at his theory of the primal horde and Oedipus complex and his theory on religion as an illusion. In order to understand Jung's theory of archetypes, the reader must first have an understanding of the reasoning behind them. Carl G. Jung explains the conscious mind by dividing it into three different psyches: the ego, the personal unconscious, and the collective unconscious. The ego is simply Jung's interpretation of the conscious mind. The personal unconscious is anything that is not presently conscious, but can be. The collective unconscious is a reservoir of human experiences that is passed from generation to generation. It includes the archetypes of self, which are archetypes for different kinds of people or characters in literature (Jung 67). They can be described as things such as déjà vu, or love at first sight. It is the feeling that what is being felt or experienced has been felt or experienced before.

Erich Fromm in his psychoanalytical approach to religion is distinct from the earlier works of Sigmund Freud. Fromm defines religion as “any system of thought and action shared by a group which gives the individual a frame of orientation and an object of devotion.” Fromm argues that irreligious systems including all the different kinds of idealism and “private” religions deserve being defined as a “religion.” Based on Fromm’s theory, it is explained that there is no human being who does not have a “religious need,” almost every part of human life reflects religious need and its fulfillment, in fact he states it to be “inherent” in man.
During the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, a psychologist named Sigmund Freud welcomed the new age with his socially unacceptable yet undoubtedly intriguing ideologies; one of many was his Psychoanalytic Theory of Dreams. Freud believed that dreams are the gateway into a person’s unconscious mind and repressed desires. He was also determined to prove his theory and the structure, mechanism, and symbolism behind it through a study of his patients’ as well as his own dreams. He contended that all dreams had meaning and were the representation of a person’s repressed wish. While the weaknesses of his theory allowed many people to deem it as merely wishful thinking, he was a brilliant man, and his theory on dreams also had many strengths. Freud’s theories of the unconscious mind enabled him to go down in history as the prominent creator of Psychoanalysis.
Jung’s theories of personality are closely related to the Freudian theories. He divided the human psyche into three categories; the ego, or the conscious mind, the personal unconscious which holds memories and such, and the collective unconscious which is the connection that all humans share. According to Jung, the collective unconscious is made up of archetypes. An archetype is the “unlearned tendency to experience things in a certain way”#. There are an innumerable amount of archetypes, which all organize experiences or materialize thoughts in their own way.
Jung does a phenomenal job by introducing the subject that this section will cover in the first sentence, “the spiritual problem of modern man is one of the questions which are so much a part of the age we live in” (Campell 456). Some writers attempt to confuse their readers by throwing some irrelevant information in the beginning, but Jung doesn’t shy away from getting straight to his point. The use of carefully invigorating words is also prevalent throughout this chapter, which makes it clear enough for the reader to substantially grasp the information. For instance, the following sentence embodies such a quality, “An intimation of the terrible law that governs blind contingency, which Heraclitus called the rule of enantiodromia” (Campbell 465). In addition, he is carefully enough to employ any redundancy; every sentence further enhances the information that is being presented in the one that precedes it.
Introduction Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, is referred to as a major contributor in the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and the 12-Step tradition (Schoen, 2009). His main contribution was bringing forth the principle of surrender to a higher power founded on his understanding of archetypes. Jung (1959/1970) hypothesized that good and evil are psychic realities greater than the ego complex.
