Analysis of Athol Fugard's Master Harold . . . and the Boys "It's a bloody awful world when you come to think of it. People can be real bastards." (Hally, pp. 15)"Master Harold"... and the boys by Athol Fugard, is an informative text about the relationship between Hally, a 17 year old white boy, and Sam and Willie, two black men. As Hally falls victim to the attitudes of white supremacy and racial intolerances accompanying the Apartheid policy of the 1950's, their lifelong friendship is destroyed. This "bloody awful world" referred to in the above quote is perpetuated by ignorance and the passiveness of its participants. One way to change these intolerances is through the delivery of a liberal education, the purpose of which is to inform students of issues such as racial and social inequality. By emerging students in literature such as the above, not only will they be informed about historical and social aspects of the world, but also the vicious cruelty between races. "Don't be clever, Sam. It doesn't suit you." (Hally, pp. 35) The notion of whites being of a superior intellectual class to blacks, a prejudice that still pervades modern society, emerges from the play as one of the predominant themes. Edmund Perry’s maintaining the same personality toward both his peers from home and Exeter is a mental journey by itself. Dealing with racism at Exeter has put Edmund through a journey mentally trying to keep his temper and follow his personality and qualities, although the racism finally bothered him to a maximum point that Edmund change. Edmund has experienced a journey by altering environments drastically from predominantly black neighborhood to a predominantly white school that might have strength his personality. At Exeter, Eddie was the strong student that he showed to be in Junior High. Edmund tells us a testimony of Herney, “He was, said those who had taught and coached him, matured for his age, serious, studious, determined and not at all in awe of the strange new world that was Phillips Exeter.”(114) I maintain the same qualities that his teachers and coaches saw him as. I also see a similarity in the way we use these qualities, to excel in education as Edmund did. After a situation at Exeter, explained in the book, Edmund says that “Eddie didn 't let any group or clique tie him down, which is kind of amazing… He could be with black people, and he could be with white people and he could be with himself.” (165) I connect strongly to this feeling or way of life. I feel as though, I do not need to have a certain group or clique to be with, all I need is myself. I am not racist nor judgemental so can be with and enjoy myself with any group nor clique. Recently, I have entered an art piece into the Teen Arts annual festival. I was placed in a group that had individuals that I have never conversated. This journey has pushed me to make conversation and still enjoy myself, and I took the opportunity to get to know them and create a sort of friendship. When it comes to friendship, personality type, race, and age are trivial matters; Brent’s strong bonds with Emil, the African American children, and the painter prove this. However, the idea of looking beneath the surface applies to not only the characters of the story, but also real people in our world. Humans need to learn how to accept everyone the way they are, for mankind is simply too judgemental. Paul Fleischman is trying to warn humanity about the many consequences that can occur if people continue to refuse to embrace one another’s flaws and faults. No one is perfect, so why judge? Just like Brent’s whirligigs’ interconnected parts, the world and all its people are linked together in a way that people should be able to feel the truth of a relationship regardless of each other’s outer appearances and characteristics.

In Sophocles ' Oedipus the King, the themes of fate and free will are very strong throughout the play. Only one, however, brought about Oedipus ' downfall and death. Both points could be argued to great effect. In ancient Greece, fate was considered to be a rudimentary part of daily life. Every aspect of life depended and was based upon fate (Nagle 100). It is common belief to assume that mankind does indeed have free will and each individual can decide the outcome of his or her life. Fate and free will both decide the fate of Oedipus the King.
The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that the events in Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, are the result of the hero’s self determination and restless attempt to escape a terrifying destiny predicted for him by the oracle of Apollo at Delphi. My intention is to prove that although the Fates play a crucial part in the story, it is Oedipus'choices and wrong doing that ultimately lead to his downfall.
The Greek tragedy Oedipus the King, by Sophocles, was written to show the common people of Greece how powerful the gods are and that your fate is pre-determined and nothing you do can change that. He does this by showing how people in this story try to escape their fate and how it is no use because in the end, what the oracles predict comes true. In Player Piano, the world is divided into three parts, “In the northwest are the managers and engineers…the northeast the machines…and in the south, the area known locally has Homestead where almost all the people live” (Vonnegut 1). The people in this world are literally divided by land mass. The individuals who live and Homestead have no connection with the individuals who live in the northwest. These two people provide two different demographics, the proletariat and the “capitalists”. The “capitalists” are those which work on and manage the machinery. These individuals are highly educated with doctoral degree’s opposed to the proletariats who have no need for higher education and spend most of their days simply existing. The “capitalists” and proletariats are divided intellectually, and often times cannot relate. More so, the commonalties feel as if they were the lesser group. When Paul enters into a bar in Homestead that is mostly frequented by the common people, a waitress says, “What are you doing here- having a good laugh at the dumb bunnies?” (Vonnegut 103). This intellectual division has led to an emotional division as well. A majority feels lesser than the minority simply because of intelligence. The waitress referring to herself and those around her as “dumb bunnies” shows that in her eyes and the eyes of the many, “capitalists” look down upon them and mock them
Every time he or another intelligent person thinks in a way that surpasses the thinking ability of an “average” person, they receive a loud, disturbing noise in their ear. This is put into place to prevent the academically gifted from taking advantage of the average people, but really it prevents any forward thinking. With this handicap, no new ideas, philosophies, or inventions can be created. This atrocious attempt at equality does not better the community, it hurts it, not allowing it to grow and flourish. Finally, this theme is developed through the main focal point of the story, Harrison Bergeron. Harrison is what Diana Moon Glampers considers highly dangerous, because he is genetically gifted in all aspects of life. While most societies would enjoy having a man such as he, this dystopian society sees him as a threat. Instead of using him to further improve their civilization, they tried to put him in line with the rest of them. If he had not been shot, he would have done brilliant things, but involuntary equality held him back. In conclusion, the ballerinas, George, and Harrison Bergeron all help develop the theme of “Equality is meant for human rights and not physical or mental attributes” because they all show how they are not able to rise above due to the handicaps forced upon them
The theme of the play is the issues within the Victorian society, which mainly focuses on the topic of marriage. This is demonstrated when Jack asked Gwendolen for marriage. Lady Bracknell responded by asking him about his social standing instead of asking do he really love Gwendolen or not. Oscar Wilde was written during the Victorian era. The statement that “A text reflects the dominant ideologies of the time in which it was written” in reference to The Importance of Being Earnest is completely untrue. The play explores the inner workings of the Victorian upper class and challenges the attitudes and ideologies which society at the time was based. In particular Wilde criticised the certain social and financial expectations to marry in an upper-class or aristocratic society. Wilde also portrays women to have greater social and moral responsibility and power than men contrary to the ideology that “a woman was inferior to a man” and thus should be powerless. Also critiqued is the immorality of upper class society through their behaviour. Contrary to this the only characters in which are moral are the working class represented by Merriman.Therefore Wilde comprehensively challenges what were dominant ideologies in Victorian England through the use of characters and themes.
His desire for knowledge along with continuously trying to find answers about himself, is something the Gods did to make him that way. I think that no matter what Oedipus chose as his path it could not be averted. He can not escape the fate that was chosen by the Gods, no matter what would have happened through out the play he would still have ended killing his father and marrying his mother. In Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex", fate truly is a huge factor in many scenes and events. According to ancient Greek belief, the word of God was fate, and fate was the word of God. Therefore, every event that ever happened was predetermined and unchangeable. Oedipus himself has been completely victimized by fate. In the beginning of the play, he was "fated" to kill his father and marry his own mother and conceive children with her. Since it was the word of Apollo, the god, to the Greeks it meant that it was unchangeable. Oedipus escaped Corinth, the supposed city of his birth, and ran far away. He happened upon an old man in the crossroads-a fated event. Though he did not know it at the time, when he killed the man, it turned out to be his own father-a prophecy he was destined by fate to fulfill (Elsom, 85).
Volunteering increases a person’s physical health. A person who volunteers is found to live a longer life. Even more so, volunteers found themselves with lower mortality rates (Dietz et al.).
