Summary In his article “No, You Shouldn’t Fear GMO Corn” published at Slate.com in 2012, Jon Entine argues that genetically engineered crops pose no harm to health or environment, and the conclusion Caitlin Shetterly made is absurd and holds no water. Though every major scientific regulatory oversight body in the world has concluded that GMO foods are harmless, the public remains deeply suspicious, fearing that such food may cause cancer or allergies. Caitlin Shetterly, one of the worried public, wrote an article in Elle magazine, claiming that genetically modified foods could cause allergic reactions, and that consumers face unknown and unacceptable risks from new, yet-to-be-identified allergens that our government’s monitoring program, compromised by industry, is not designed to pick up. Genetically modified? That alone should be a cause for alarm, and have you wondering, what exactly is in this that I am eating? Yet every day millions of American’s choose to load up on food filled with GMO’s, and not even know it. First we must understand what GMO’s are. GMO’s are any organism whose genetics has been altered using genetic engineering. We should not be tampering with nature, and should try to grow organically as much as possible. There has not been enough research on GMO’s to know the potential long term effects it can have on us, so this is why GMO’s should be banned.
Undoubtedly, critics have raised counterarguments to most if not all the arguments presented by the proponents of GMOs. These counterarguments range from religious to empirical. However the most critical counterarguments stem from the visible negative effects of GMOs. A study published in Nature magazine concluded that the transgenic modification which resulted in corn stock being resistant to pests such as corn borers, additionally caused the pollen to harm monarch butterflies.

First, I would like to clarify my point of view on the statement made by Mr. Henry I. Miller and Gregory Conko, from “Scar Food,” policy Review (June/July 2006). The statement by Mr. Henry I. Miller and Gregory Conko of the Hoover Institution argue that genetically modified (GM) crops are safer for the consumer and better for the environment than non- GM crops. And also they discusses about topics such as Americans take food safety very seriously, Do not trust Mother Nature and also about property damage and personal Injury from the naturally produced foods. In addition to this Mr. Henry & Mr. Gregory is trying to say that genetically produced food are much safer than naturally produced food. As I went through this article I understood that it is about the advantages of introducing genetically modified foods are safer to consume than naturally produced food. So this part of the argument can be considered as the opinion of a one side of a coin.

On a Saturday morning in Long Island, New York, parents gathered to confer about the latest topic, genetically modified (GM) foods. Amongst the parents, there was a mother of three children named Sarah and a father of two children named Ted. Sarah rejected the idea of her children consuming GM fruits, vegetables, and grains calling them “Frankenfood.” As the discussion continued, Ted shared his concurring view of GM foods. He was indifferent about not knowing what GM products he purchased and fed his children. These conflicting viewpoints attribute to their children being part of the first generation of genetically modified kids, and the genetically modified foods were introduced into the food industry of the United States (Hillstrom). As the controversy continues, more studies have been conducted since the beginning of genetically modified foods showing the effects of these products. GM foods have negative or harmful effects on humans and animals as well as threaten the environment and farms. When GM products are consumed, humans and animals are at risk for many health problems. Genetically modified organisms have been the talk of the town for quite some time. People go on strikes and write letters to Congress about them; but are they really that bad. Should they be illegal? Research has shown that GMOs are found in almost every aisle of any American grocery store. The average American would not be able to see that the food they buy contains GMOs because they are not labeled as such. GMOs non-labeled state allow many companies to use dangerous amounts of them in their product in order to keep the price of the product cheap and gain more profit. GMO food should be illegal because its appearance has broken social and political systems by not being properly monitored by higher authorities like the USDA.
The term GM foods or GMO (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques (Whitman, 2000). These plants have been modified in the laboratory to offer desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Also, genetic engineering techniques have been applied to create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly and accurately. For example, this is done by the geneticist isolating the gene responsible for drought tolerance and inserts it into another plant. The new genetically-modified plant will now have gained drought tolerance as well.
This has created a large amount of debate on local, national, and international levels about the safety of genetically modified foods to human health. There are many angles that have been taken from different groups on this issue. Some believe it is harmful to our health, with one source stating that, “mice eating GMO corn had fewer and smaller babies (Jagelio 2013).” Without testing on humans how are we to know these harmful effects aren’t impacting our health and reproduction. Other groups see GMOs as being both beneficial and having no impact on human health.
An English doctor, named Arpad Pusztai, did a study on rats being fed genetically modified foods. His study found out that rats that ate genetically modified potatoes had pre-cancerous cells, smaller brains, smaller livers, smaller testicles, and damaged immune systems. After finding this out, he then changed the eating habits of the rats by interchanging between feeding them organic potatoes and genetically modified potatoes for two weeks at a time. He concluded that whenever the rats ate the organic potatoes, their symptoms disappeared, but when the rats ate the GMO potatoes again, the symptoms reappeared. Pusztai study isn’t the only that proves that GMOs are harmful. Other studies have also shown that GMOs are linked to reproductive problems, immune system problems, accelerated aging, gastrointestinal distress, and dysfunctional regulation.
