Zenzele: A Letter for My Daughter features both a woman’s search for her own identity while also exploring the relationship between mother and daughter. In the form of a letter, the mother endeavors to teach her daughter a few more lessons before they will be apart from one another for years or longer. Each lesson illuminates her sense of self as well as her view of her in relationship to her daughter, in whom she has great pride. Throughout the letter, Amai Zenzele compares herself to others including her daughter, her sister, her husband, and others she grew up around. She communicates a sense of falling short of others at times. There are questions that Zenzele asks that would have never occurred to Amai Zenzele to ask let alone answer. Her husband and Zenzele debate these kinds of issues while Amai Zenzele enjoys watching from the side, avoiding being asked to contribute. Initially, Zenzele brings up the concept to voice her disapproval of the idea. Much of her concern comes out of a modern and Western view of such practices. Zenzele sees it as a man buying his wife as if she were property. Amai Zenzele, on the other hand, though she can understand her daughter’s concerns, can still see it in the customary way it was meant. Through this she is even able to get her daughter to relent with Zenzele saying, “I find it encouraging that our culture actually places great value on an educated, smart woman who has a career” and further, “I guess if submission was the goal, then they would certainly go for the rural, illiterate girls” (Maraire 33). Zenzele may debate in a heated manner, especially with her father, and touch upon subjects beyond Amai Zenzele’s reach, but she can still always be influenced and persuaded gently by her mother’s experience. Although, a mother’s determination in the short story “I Stand Here Ironing” mother face with an intense internal conflict involving her oldest daughter Emily. This was evident throughout various regions such as the Middle East, Africa, Americas, and Europe. The time period from 1750-1914 was also an era of industrialization, in places especially like Europe. New machinery and a grand-scale labor force was required to allow the country to prosper as much as possible. From 1750 to 1914, the status of women in Western Euope changed through an increase in employment opportunities and through the earning of women’s rights, however, female labor in designated households was invariably evident.

For instance, a conversation occurs between the narrator and her mother when the mother criticizing a girl who seems similar to the author on TV which reveals dissimilar understanding for both of them to each other’s behavior. At first, the daughter speaks out for the girl by questioning her mother by saying “why picking on her […] She’s pretty good. Maybe she’s not the best, but she’s trying hard.” The daughter actually is defending for herself and reflecting that she feels uncomfortable with her mother’s disregard of her hard work. She wants to get her mother’s compliments instead of her criticisms. However, her mother response of, “just like you,” and, “not the best. Because you not trying.” Here, her mother doesn’t really answer her question, instead wants her put more effort on trying, neglecting how much she has tried before. However, in her mother’s perspective, she has never tried hard enough. By narratively stating the conversations she has encountered, readers perceive a strong implication of the reason for a future conflict between her and her mother.
I chose to write about Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros because I am the only daughter of three children. Therefore, I can relate to this essay because I constantly strive to make my father proud in everything that I do, along with feeling as though I am alone and not understood by my family. My father is constantly in the back of my mind so whatever I do revolves around how I know he would feel about it. Due to this I am more studious when it comes to my education because I know that he will be more supportive the better that I do. To further support her acceptance of arrange marriages, the person that she will marry will not necessarily be a stranger because her parents examine her potential suitor’s and his family’s background. She readily trusts her parent’s judgement so she has no concerns about whether or not the man she will marry is “good”. The rifts between mothers and daughters continue to separate them, but as the daughters get older they become more tolerant of their mothers. They learn they do not know everything about their mothers, and the courage their mothers showed during their lives is astounding. As they get older they learn they do not know everything, and that their mothers can still teach them much about life. They grow closer to their mothers and learn to be proud of their heritage and their culture. They acquire the wisdom of understanding, and that is the finest feeling to have in the world.
