When Science meets religion by Ian Barbour, in chapter one Barbour introduces four main typologies describing them as the “Four views of Science and Religion” (Barbour 7) summarized as: Conflict, Independence, Dialogue, and Integration. These views are then explained featuring different viewpoints changing them drastically. Conflict in chapter 1 is the viewpoint that I identified with the most due to Barbour’s explanation through Scientific materialism. Scientific materialism made the point that the scientific method is the only true path disproving most of religions foot hold on society such as church and state. Scientific materialism shows that everything can be related to physics meaning that everything can be reasonably and accurately explained in this world meaning that nature could replace God if and only if we evolve as a society. In the book Barbour reacts to Edward O. Wilson writings that states “religious practices were a useful survival mechanism in humanity earlier history because they contributed to group cohesion. But he says that the power of religion will be gone forever when religion is explained as a product of evolution.” (Barbour 13) This analysis by Barbour is the one I feel connected to the most because I am also locked within a struggle between religion and science and as the thought of it feel that because of the internal and external conflict between the both topics believe is that when religion is explained we could focus on more sensitive matters like stem cell …show more content…
