People can also be manipulated to act a certain way or believe in something. When a person is manipulated by someone, he or she hide their intent or real purpose (Sutiu 102). Manipulation is the more devious method of influencing someone. Unlike persuasion, the manipulator 's intentions are not known, and definitely are not good (Sutiu 105). As mentioned above, both are forms of communication with the goal to influence a person 's behavior one way or another. However, they differ because with persuasion, an individual is able to exercise his or her free will (Sutiu 106).
There are multiple types of persuasion and compliance gaining techniques that we utilize everyday in order to influence others, whether we do so consciously or sub-consciously. One of the most popular means of persuading others is the Door-In-The-Face method. This method consists of making a large request that will most likely be turned down. After the initial appeal is turned down, the persuader will offer a smaller request to the respondent, or the person who is being persuaded. The smaller request must precede the larger request in order to be effective. This method has been proven to be a very successful compliance method. According to Tusing and Dillard, “Door-In-The-Face has been found to increase compliance with the target request, compared to control conditions where only the target request is made,” (Tusing & Dillard, 2000, p. 5). The respondents are more willing to comply after being offered the smaller request, because in contrast to the large, initial request, the second request seems much more smaller and manageable. If the second request was offered alone, it would not produce the same effect.
Persuasion is a commonly used communication technique that allows us to socially influence a certain topic positively or negatively. Its purpose is to help affirm or nullify an idea, belief or attitude. Sometimes the exact topic is very detectable in communication such as during debates but other times it displayed a little more subtly. Persuasion is more than just verbally speaking. Non-verbal communication such as body language, tone and pitch of the voice can also add to the affirmation of the topic. The setting and location also help encourage the acceptance of what is being persuaded.
Cialdini’s mentions throughout his text on how the six weapons of influence are present throughout the world. These six weapons of influence all play a part in our lives in some shape or form. Throughout my essay, I will present examples for each weapon, how they take place and offer a critical analysis of the website OkCupid, and how it uses liking as one of the weapons of influence.
In Oceania, the youths are the controlled most, because they are most impressionable and easily controlled. The Nazis also decided to use youths and shaped their minds into blindly following, and this created the Hitler Youths. An article from the Holocaust Encyclopedia states, “Schools played an important role in spreading Nazi ideas to German youth. While censors removed some books from the classroom, German educators introduced new textbooks that taught students love for Hitler, obedience to state authority, militarism, racism, and antisemitism” (“Indoctrinating Youth”). Orwell in 1984 wrote about how “the children were terrible” and “adored the Party” (24). The Party and Nazis had their youths brainwashed. The children trained to hate and be suspicious of everything. Winston contemplates about Oceania’s youth, “He wondered vaguely how many others like her there might be in the younger generation—people who had grown up in the world of the Revolution, knowing nothing else, accepting the Party as something unalterable, like the sky, not rebelling against its authority but simply evading it” (Orwell 131). The children growing up in the Oceania did not realize that the Party had control on them. The Party succeeded in eliminating the past and reestablishing a clean slate for the future. Newer generations had no chance in revolting, because they had no real history of a revolution to look back on and want to change. The Party controlled the children and the future by making the children spying on their families. The children did not develop morals to know they did something wrong.

Persuasion is an important aspect of communication, certainly a significant business activity. Regardless of whether this comes in the form of a sender influencing a party or the receiver itself is being influenced. Typically, this could come in the form of a salesman or, even a manager communicating with key stakeholders, such as potential investors.
	The pounding of shells, the mines, the death traps, the massive, blind destruction, the acrid stench of rotting flesh, the communal graves, the charred bodies, and the fear. These are the images of war. War has changed over the centuries from battles of legions of ironclad soldiers enveloped in glimmering armor fighting for what they believe to senseless acts of guerrilla warfare against those too coward to be draft-dodgers. Those who were there, who experienced the terror first hand were deeply effected and changed forever. In their retinas, images of blood and gore are burned for the rest of their life.
