College students are getting many different educations between countries, and some countries focus on their imagination, and others focus on their solid knowledge. There is no doubt that America has one of the top education systems in the world, otherwise, wouldn’t attract so many international students. From the article, “We Should Cherish Our Children 's Freedom to Think” by Kie Ho, he shows what he thinks about American education. He mainly states that American education is the most top in the world and is a country of innovation, because its system is more about let students “think” and less focus on “actual knowledge.” Although I agree with Ho’s idea about student’s freedom to think, however, I disagree with Ho’s minding about students …show more content…
114). Ho knows although American education does not have strict and high standards in basic skills that students should learn, like Japan or other countries that are not America. Ho believes America has the best education in the world, and that was base on what he educated and what his son been to educate. Ho wrote that “my son had studied creative geography…he draws a map of the route that he traveled to get to school…” and “When I was 12 in Indonesia…I had to memorize the names of all the world’s major cities” (p.113). Ho states that his son’s school was teaching map skills by letting him draw a map and traveled base on that map, and his school in his country just made him remember all the major cities. He believes that helped a lot to his son’s creative in understanding geography. Ho felt he did not have any chance to study freedom, and that may indirectly affect his imagination. But his son who studied in America, his school taught him freedom and creativity. He believes that is what education should teach students. Based on his examples, I think that is a personal story and may only happen to him. Based on his examples, I believe that is a personal story and may only happen to him. Ho should have some evidence that 's been proof that occurred in many others, and not just use the evidence based on his experience. All in all, Ho shows readers that American education is the best in the world according to his personal
My mom would always say, “American born Chinese students have it easy in America.” One key difference between the American education system and Chinese education system is the way they are taught. Being raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I went to school to understand the idea of analyzing and understanding concepts. After reading Only Hope, I realized that their education is based on more memorizations. To Chinese students, understand the concept and apply it is not the most important, you must just memorize it for the exam. Many parents in China would say that going on vacation and relaxing is a waste of time because they need to focus on learning. In Greenspan’s article, it mentions that a student in China is the top of her class and is fluent in English, yet she cannot go on vacation because her mother wants her to spend time learning, many students in China
...t a damper on academic growth. The United States should view the academic success of other countries, question the reasons for their success, and use that information to our advantage.
Education is one of the cornerstones and pillars to the establishment and preservation of democracy. In history, countless scores of philosophers and political thinkers believed that only an educated citizenry can take on the quintessential task of upholding democracy. Thomas Jefferson, the primary writer of the Declaration of Independence, stated that “an informed citizenry is the only true repository of the public will.” A renowned defender of public education, Jefferson proposed plans for an education system that included grammar schools in his presidency. As a result of these relentless policies for education, the United States expanded on the concept of public instruction through the establishment and upkeep of a practical education system. The United States continued this tradition and established a reputation as one of the best education in the world. Currently, this is no longer valid as other countries such as Finland, China, and South Korea are competing for the dominant position through rigorous reforms that aim to boost student performances (“Best Education”). Meanwhile, the American system is inefficient, inhibited by political obstacles and gridlock while Finland, the top ranked country in terms of schooling, is continuing to improve. According to the PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) examinations that tested pupils across a variety of subjects such as reading, mathematics, and science of 2009, Finland’s students were ranked among the top (“PISA 2009”). The American students were ranked below average for industrialized countries in the world, revealing the reality of the educational crisis in the country. Finland’s education system, compared to the Americans, offers major differences that greatly ...
Schooling has a lot of problems that need a lot of solutions. Many of these problems stem from the fact that the American school system is notorious for wasting the time of students and teachers. Students rarely get the chances to learn and experience topics that not only interest them but are also topics that have the potential for being important in their future careers. Time is also wasted during standardized tests that do not give American students an accurate representation of their intelligence compared to the intelligence of others worldwide.
If we compare a college student to a high school student we will see the difference between them in the knowledge and life quality. For instance, now that I’m a college student I know more about many different subject than before. I took a computer science class even that it is not my major. Now I know different kind of programming languages such as python and java. Moreover, I learned how to makes online games. I’m also taking economy class which is helping me learn how to manage the available resources that I have. Sense I’m an international student I got to learn a new language and actually use that language in not only speaking, but also in writing. According to Cronon, “Educated people can appreciate not only the front page of the New York Times but also the arts section, the business section, the science section, and the editorials”(p. 3). That shows us how higher education can improve our skills in different things. college education gives a much better chance in future for students who are serious about it.Therefore, all high school students should continue their education and obtain a four year college
Compared to most countries in the world, the United States of America is privileged. Americans are entitled to freedoms other countries do not have: freedoms of speech, press, religion, assembly, petition, and the right to bear arms. Every American has the right to a basic education, regardless of race, gender, or income; all Americans could have at least a high school diploma. Although this is wonderful, the quality of the education people receive in the United States does not reach its full potential. With the resources available, the American education system should be better.
America the greatest country earth is sadly just an “Idiot Nation”. Americas standards of education compared to other countries in the world is very low. It is not our governments fault for our poor standards of education, it is our fault for our pitiful motivation and poor standards of what we think a good education is. Here in America, many of the students can not do the simplest of problems because it is just too “hard”, then they give up and won’t ever try it again.
The principles relating to children’s rights as found in The Early Childhood Australia Code of Ethics, The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and Equal Opportunity legislation will direct the service in determining diversity and cultural competence in a centre. The education and care service believes each and every child has the right to have their culture acknowledged, respected and recognises the significance of valuing the diversity of expectations, perspectives, experience, knowledge and skills that any people of the community will have to encompass, and will support the inclusion of all children together with those with extra needs.
This welcome great opportunity that enables individual to achieve their dream to be successful in life. In J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur letter “What is America?” he wrote “ The American is a new man, who acts upon new principles; he must therefore entertain new ideas, and form new opinions” (Crèvecoeur par. 3). Which means that Americans needs knowledge to be able to support their opinions whether they agree or disagree with the new principles. Education is the basis of developing Americans by providing knowledge considering humanity the world over. Americans in the society obtain toward in life that builds opinions among the community. Education helps the society to have a better of understanding the world around them rightly, changing to new ways and means that improve the
American students have a different lifestyle, a way of looking at things and they are selfish in some way.
A few of the physical changes I have noticed in the children are many. Some of those include cooing, standing, and walking. The first incident was when the first child arrived in the morning. After mom left O, the caregiver placed her on the floor and was talking to her, the child cooed back and was laughing. I never heard O laugh before, also when the caregiver placed her on the floor O was reaching for toys and bending her body almost in half as she reached for the farthest toys away from her, then she sat up effortlessly. O was not doing this at the beginning of my practicum, she could not bend and reach for the toys. The next child I observed was standing holding on. B was using one hand to hold onto the furniture and then he would let go with one hand and bend and
He favors the American style of education because in his country teachers make student memorize unnecessary information, while his son is learning how to be creative, and how to think freely. As he tries to justify his reasons for advocating the American educational system he says “Would We, however, prefer to stuff the developing little heads of our children with hundreds of geometry problems, the names of rivers in Brazil and 50 lines from The Canterbury Tales?” (Ho p.
Every country in the world places considerable value on education, for education occupies an important place in the country. However, school education in the United States is far too optimistic. The reason why the American education starts to lose its grip is that the current education systems cannot meet the needs of excellent education for cultivating the qualified students. Students from middle and primary school concern about their study in school when they show their limitations in mastering the basic knowledge. 1[Traditional way of teaching puts many emphases on the practical function and at most time, teaching serves for the particular purpose of school education].2[In addition, a highly relaxed education environment provided by the
Children are naturally curious about the world we live in and are eager to ask questions to develop their understanding. Children should be given the opportunity to explore and discover new ideas for themselves. (Beckley et al, 2009, p. 196) The National Curriculum states that science should be taught in a way that develops the skills, attitudes and ways of working that express their scientific values by be curious, using their imagination, raising questions, working collaborate and performing practical investigations. Colleges regularly houses future innovators, inventors, leaders, and pioneers of discovery. This is because institutions of higher education attract intellectuals, people who are willing to spend years and thousands of dollars to learn and utilize their acquired knowledge in the real world. If colleges cease being havens of free thought, free expression, and the free exchange of ideas, then the graduates they churn out will simply be robotic individuals shackled by a restricted and suppressed mind. There can’t be change in the world without people who want to do so. C. Van Woodward says it best. "The history of intellectual growth and discovery clearly demonstrates the need for unfettered freedom, the right to think the unthinkable, discuss the unmentionable, and challenge the unchallengeable.”
