In Wang Anyi's novel Song of Everlasting Sorrow women's friendship is a major theme; however, many of the friendships fail. Wang Qiyao's struggles with figuring out who she took an enormous toll on her relationships with both Wu Peizhen and Jiang Lili. If Wang Qiyao could not understand herself, how could Qiyao's friends genuinely sympathize with her? While Wang Qiyao was already struggling with her identity after Qiyao failed the screen test the release of her pictures from the photo-shoot Mr.Cheng forced Wang Qiyao to re-evaluate herself, "She was now confused as to who she really was, and this drove her desperation. Although Wang Qiyao thought of herself as a poised, dignified, refined woman, who can think for herself, thus her …show more content…
One illustration that occurred with both Wu Peizhen and Jiang Lili was how Wang Qiyao viewed the relationship as if her friends should be grateful that she is even hanging out with them in the first place. "Before long, it was more like Wang Qiyao was doing her a favor by going with her"(28). While with Jiang Lili Wang Qiyao initiated their friendship with the hopes of maybe gaining a little bit of attention from Jiang Lili's saying that "Maybe the others would end up giving their excitement over to her"(48). Although it is true that the friendship between Wang Qiyao and Wu Peizhen was more genuine, the friendship between Wang Qiyao and Jiang Lili was not without ulterior motives for either party. Both Wang Qiyao and Jiang Lili could gain something other than company from their friendship. For Wang Qiyao the main benefit of being Jiang Lili's friend was purely for monetary and material gains "Staying with the Jiang family had hundreds of benefits, but not a single one rightfully belonged to her"(85). In contrast, Jiang Lili's reason for having Wang Qiyao around was for social gains. Jiang Lili desired to flaunt Wang Qiyao's beauty to gain recognition and divert her insecurities. In both cases, the friendships were

Confucius believed that proper behavior within all types of relationships was dictated by a hierarchy that should be honored and preserved in order to maintain harmony within oneself and the rest of society (Bulliet 86). Zhao respected and supported these ideas in her own writings as she regularly makes reference to the notion that relationships between married men and women should be guided by the principles of yin and yang. According to Zhao, “as Yin and Yang are not of the same nature, so man and woman have different characteristics”, hence while the yang is firm and strong, the yin must be flexible and gentle (Zhao). Her advice to her daughters and the rest of her female audience was meant to help them avoid the shame that came with breaking the rules of society and promote a happy, harmonious lifestyle. To Zhao and most others, the inequality that existed between men and women was an inherent and necessary quality of traditional Chinese life. The historical context in which Zhao lived gives sufficient information to understand her position and motivations in Lessons for a Woman, nonetheless, her views on education add a unique dimension to her

It solidified the truth unacknowledged to them earlier--their friendships among each other were valued above their less than satisfactory marriages in their minds, something that if uncovered by their husbands would have surely placed them under detrimental suspicion. Throughout the story, after surviving the odds and preserving a dangerously unsteady life, the female characters proved that their devotion to each other could conquer the power struggle against the forced commitments they lived in. Society deemed their marriages to be untouchable and unable to be disputed in any way, but with the sturdy connections among them, wives found a way to tamper with the stereotypes and secure a better future for their fellow struggling
In the stories “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin both women suffer through expectations brought on by society and the ideas of marriage. Emily loses her sanity trying to obtain love and live up to the expectations of society. Emily kills the man she loved so that he would never leave, and so that she could maintain her reputation. She was put on a pedestal, and that pedestal would end up being her destruction. Louise is a woman afflicted by heart problems, which could relate her unhappiness. After losing her husband she starts to feel free; however when her husband walks through the door she dies. Louise was a prisoner of societies making, she was never given a voice. She could never explain her unhappiness because women were expected to love and obey their husband’s without complaints. Marriage to these women meant different things, although the idea of marriage damaged both women. Louise and Emily were women damaged by the pressures of who they are expected to be.
Throughout the poem, Brooks uses wealth imagery to show how when exposed to the unpleasant reality of poverty, the affluent, although well-intentioned, will refuse to help those in need. In the beginning of the poem, Brooks descriptively describes the wealthy women in Ladies’ Betterment League. While creating an image of these women, Brooks states that the women “are full,/ Sleek, tender-clad, fit, fiftyish, [and] a-glow..." (14-15) These well-off women who make up the Ladies’ Betterment League use their money to keep themselves well-fed, clean, and healthy. In fact, these fortunate women possess an excess of money to spend on themselves. The use of the words “full” and “tender-clad” create an image of comfortable, wealthy women who use their immense amount of wealth to
In life, friendship is something that everybody needs. It allows people to function better and be more successful. Some people think that all friendships are the same and do not differ from the next. However, I believe that each friendship has its own quality that makes it different from all of the other friendships while still retaining all of the characteristics that make the relationship a friendship. Today, this essay will highlight the qualities that are the same in the friendship of Maurice and Laura from An Invisible Thread and the friendship of Lennie and George from Of Mice and Men while also identifying the differences between them as well as illustrating the very attributes that define a friendship.
During the Romantic Era, there was reaction against the Enlightenment 's privileging of Reason. The Romantics valued emotion and imagination alongside reason but made an attempt to maintain a balance between them. It was a commonly held belief by Romantics that logic had its boundaries. Therefore, they preferred to search for meaning through nature, the sublime, longing and philosophical idealism, more than logic. Mary Wollstonecraft in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman emphasises the importance of educated females to allow them be capable of expressing themselves as individuals. Similarly, Felicia Hemans in her poem, Indian Woman’s Death Song, stresses the importance of understanding societal pressures and not allowing these pressures to
In the beginning of the story, Jing-mei complies with her mother’s tests of prodigiousness which shows her naive nature. At first, Jing-mei is immensely enthusiastic to be a prodigy in many different types of fields. Jing-mei’s mother is extremely animated and electrified by the ideas of fame, but Jing-mei “[is] just as excited as [her] mother, maybe even more so” (1). Jing-mei supports her mother’s dreams for her. Jing-mei sees the fame as “exciting” and is willing to go through her mother’s
Wu Zhou’s childhood was educated but short as she became a junior concubine at a short age. “Wu was given a good education [and] was taught to read, write, and to play music” (“Empress Wu Zetian”). In that time, it was not common for women to gain an education. Her father urged her to gain an education, and living in a wealthy family, Wu could become well educated. “Wu Zhou entered he palace of the Tang Emperor Taizong, at the age of 14, as a junior concubine” (FitzGerald). Being very beautiful in her youth, Wu caught the eye Emperor
All mother- daughters relationships go through a series of hardships and obstacles. Relationships between mothers and daughters can be seen through care and compassion or anger and frustration depending on how they are viewed. The memoir, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mom by Amy Chua and the novel, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan both set examples of different mother-daughter relationships during music lessons. Amy Chua’s excerpt portrays a tense tone, while Amy Tan’s excerpt depicts a hostile and belligerent tone.
"A laotong relationship is made by choice for the purpose of emotional companionship and eternal fidelity" (See 56). A friendship comes with many challenges, but with a strong bond between one another, friends can overcome the obstacles they are faced with together. In the book Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See, Lily and Snow Flower are laotongs who face obstacles throughout their lives. Throughout the novel, the two girls have to follow the strict cultural practices to please Chinese Society. They are faced with the pain of foot binding, and the everyday chores women have to do. Together, the girls face big and small obstacles that make the theme of the novel about the bond between women.
Gail Godwin's short story "A Sorrowful Woman" revolves around a wife and mother who becomes overwhelmed with her husband and child and withdraws from them, gradually shutting them completely out of her life. Unsatisfied with her role as dutiful mother and wife, she tries on other roles, but finds that none of them satisfy her either. She is accustomed to a specific role, and has a difficult time coping when a more extensive array of choices is presented to her. This is made clear in this section of the story.
The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, is about two migrant workers, Lennie and George, who go to work on a ranch in California and learn how special and important their friendship is. Migrant workers are workers that move from place to place leaving their friends behind. They are not able to maintain friendships and often don’t want to even try and start a friendship. At the ranch, Lennie and George meet many people that help them decide their future and help them realize that friendship is a very unique exclusive thing. Throughout the novel, many characters experience loneliness longing for a friend or someone to talk to while others, with friends, learn the importance of having a friend at your side.
As we begin a look at this effect on western culture consider the following observation, “Man friendships during the 19th century were marked by an intense bond and filled with deeply held feeling and sentimentality. Man friendships in many instances had a similar intensity as romantic relationships between men and women. Essentially, it was a continuation of the heroic friendship of the ancient world, coupled ...
