Victoria secrets is an American designer and marketer of women’s premium lingerie, swimwear, accessories and beauty products. Victoria secret was founded by Roy Raymond, and his wife Gaye Raymond in san Francisco, California, on June Twelfth, 1977. Eight years before founding Victoria Secret, Roy was extremely embarrassed when going to purchase lingerie for his wife at a department store in San Francisco. He said that he was faced with racks of terry-cloth robes and ugly floral nylon nightgowns. After this horrible experience was when he decided to open his own high end lingerie company. You could say that all the casting is pretty much strategically, by choosing a certain model to play in the ad it displays a specific type of image depending on what they were going for. All of the Victoria secret models are called “Angels” and they all have social media pages with an immense fan base that steams from generally young females. The way that these “Angels” look exemplifies today’s standard of beauty that most teenage girls strive to be like, and the people at Victoria Secret know this, and use it to their advantage. However, even though this helps make profits for this multi million-dollar company, it is unfortunate that, society has plugged in to young girl’s minds that being tall and skinny with perfectly defined cheekbones and long luscious hair is what it takes to be “pretty”. In all the ads that I analyzed, the main model that is showcased is Candace Swanepol. She is an extremely attractive tall blond woman with a perfectly sculpted body. She is the face of Victoria Secret; she is what the young teenage girl mind thinks they must look like to be “pretty” or “cool”. Candace uses her looks and fame to bring engrossment to the brand name. Color can be one of the most important elements in a businesses advertisements campaign. Consumers notice color before words and even the fresh faced model that was hired to stand next to the company’s products. Different types of colors display different types of moods in the advertisements. I looked at two ads that displayed color and one that was displayed in black and white. It is common for companies to use both color and black and white in their different ads. Both options are used to set a different theme for the audience “Black-and-white images can lead consumers to focus on the abstract, essential, and defining components of a product. In contrast, color images can draw attention to the concrete, sometimes unimportant and idiosyncratic features of the product,” (“Does Black-and-White Advertising Help Consumers Make Better Decisions?”) Black and white also gives off a classier look. Also the colors black and white are currently very high in popularity due to all the fashion that has emerged in the past few years. So using black and white for this ad shows the audience many things such as; they are keeping up to date with all the highest fashions and that when you wear their clothing you will give off a classy vibe. Their advertisement’s color did not go well together and did not seem to fit. Also, the Fancy Feast advertisement had good texture, which helped catch the eye of consumers. The Sheba advertisement did not have much texture and was very bland.
This commercial appeals to are Ethos the way the author creates points that prove what is presented is something worth seeing and listening to the viewer since it comes from a quality source. This is a stereotype, which has been engraved into heads of men, women, and children. By plastering the world with models who seem to have it the genetic jackpot, Dove set out to discredit this cultural cast created by our society. Body image, to some people, is the first part of a person they notice. A study conducted by Janowsky and Pruis compared body image between younger and older women. They found that although older women “may not feel the same societal pressure as younger women to be thin and beautiful…some feel that they need to make themselves look as young as possible” (225). Since women are being faced with pressure to conform in ways that seem almost impossible, Jeffers came to the conclusion “they should create advertising that challenges conventional stereotypes of beauty” (34) after conducting various interviews with feminist scholars. The advertising involved targets young teenage women and features models that portray desirable items, and the “norm” is for these women to be slender and beautiful (Vonderen & Kinnally, 2012). Research has been done to prove that the media’s pressure on being thin causes women to be depressive and have negative feelings about themselves. Women’s views are skewed and perceived incorrectly of what the typical female body should be (Haas, Pawlow, Pettibone & Segrist, 2012). Body image for women has always been stressed for them to look a certain way and to try to obtain “physical perfection.” But due to the pressure on women to be this certain way, it is common for the mass media to be destructive to the young, impressionable girl.
The ideal image that the media has created is to be exceptionally thin and tall. This is what the media considers to be beautiful. This ideal image can be seen on a daily basis just about everywhere on advertisements, which promote this unattainable image constantly. Research has proven that women tend to feel more insecure about themselves when they look at a magazine or television, which makes them feel self conscious(Mackler 25). The irony in this is that not even the women in the advertisements are as flawless as they appear to be. In order for a woman to appear in the mass media her image must be enhanced in several ways. A women is often airbrushed to conceal their actual skin but it does not end there. Through various computerized programs a woman's actual features are distorted until a false unrealistic image is reached.
