Recommended: Essays On Role Of Humor
Humor is an instinct that evolved to serve a distinct purpose in everyone’s lives especially to stay healthy emotionally. The passage, What Makes Us Laugh by Leon Rappoport thoroughly analyzes the different theories in people’s reactions of humor. Rappoport discusses how certain jokes succeed and fail, why we laugh when we don’t think we should, and why sometimes we might not react to humor. Humor can range depending on the person listening and their perspective or beliefs. Following that, there can be a number of responses whether it is laughable, not laughable, or a bad/good joke. I chose to analyze a section of a stand up comedy piece by John Mulaney entitled “Real Estate”, in which it states “Craig and Stacey are looking for a two-story …show more content…
There are many theories that Rappoport describes that pertain to this piece. The first utterance in which states, “Craig and Stacey are looking for a two-story A frame that’s near Craig’s job in the downtown, but also satisfies Stacey’s need to be near a beach which is nowhere near Craig’s job” is contradicting because they want one that is convenient to Craig’s job in the downtown area, but also near a beach for Stacey, which you can’t have both of them (Real Estate). The fact that they could not have the best of both worlds is what makes this funny. This punchline also applies to the incongruity theory that is where things that do not normally go together replace logic, making that humor arise. Mulaney utilizes this in the way that you were not expecting John Mulaney to mimic the voice of a real estate agent on HGTV and be so exaggerated about it. It is so blatantly not in line with each other and not a realistic situation. In this case, the incongruity theory overlaps with the surprise theory with the focuses on sudden and unexpected events. Rappoport noted that French philosopher René Descartes described the surprise theory as “a mixture of joy and shock at the occurrence of a happy surprise that provoked laughter, and both Hobbes and Darwin also mentioned surprise as an important basis of humor” (Rappaport 17). Lastly, this …show more content…
In which, the parts of the jokes he is splitting up are the utterances that are broken up with pauses, which allows it be more funny. The joke is organized in a way that is funny because if it was all said all at once and there were no pauses or distinct utterances, it would not have as much humor. The whole of the utterance includes semantic content, style, and compositional structure, with them all being linked while speaking. Mulaney consistently implies that he is finished throughout his skit, but actually keeps going, adding to the
Laughing is resorted to in times where we need to laugh. It’s an escape from reality, its comfort, its fear. Laughing subdues any emotion that is too high strung in our system. It lets it vapor out in a melancholy form that helps us cope with problems that no one else can really understand and help us with. In One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest it allowed emotional tension escape from the patients and made nurse Ratched lose her ward.
Humour allows other's to understand a difficult situation without feeling the need to feel uncomfortable about it.
• Incongruity Theory posits that comedy is derived from the perception of something incongruous violating our mental patterns and expectations. Sunny Prestatyn initially constructs an idyllic image of femininity only to undermine it through coarse sexual innuendo, offensive language, and violent imagery to comedic effect.
Humor helps a person to dissolve stressful emotions, it’s a creative way to mentally solve a problem without being depress about the circumstances. Humor encourages a person to realize that there is a problem and something needs to be done about the situation, than a person is not in serious or stressful mode. Sharing your problems with other people helps to ease the pain and with humor added into the problem, helps a person to talk about their feelings and the person who is listening can relax too, because there is somewhat of sense of humor in the problem that does not put the listener in a discomfort position. With this humor mechanism a person can actually realize they have problem and that they have to solve it, instead being depress about the
Psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists study humor because it is a fundamental culture value, but they still can’t determine why certain things make some people laugh and others not. There are “humor quotient” tests that are designed to measure an individual’s sense of humor, but these tests are questionable. These tests aren’t accurate because almost all humor depends on cultural background knowledge and language skills. Not every person in the whole world, or even in one country share the same background knowledge and skills, therefore they cannot have the same type of humor. “The fact remains that individuals vary in their appreciation of humor” (Rappoport 9). Since humor varies from individual to individual, humor lies in the individual. How successful or funny a joke is depends on how the person receives the joke, humor cannot be measured by a statistical
Steve Almond’s “Funny is the New Deep” talks of the role that comedy has in our current society, and most certainly, it plays a huge role here. Namely, through what Almond [Aristotle?] calls the “comic impulse”, we as a people can speak of topics that would otherwise make many of uncomfortable. Almond deems the comic impulse as the most surefire way to keep heavy situations from becoming too foreboding. The comic impulse itself stems from our ability and unconscious need to defend and thus contend with the feeling of tragedy. As such, instead of rather forcing out humor, he implies that humor is something that is not consciously forced out from an author, but instead is more of a subconscious entity, coming out on its own. Almond emphasizes

For this reason, humor holds the capability to bring people together and lead to something, like change. Mary O’Hara writes “[comedy provides] a counterbalance to bigotry and prejudice” (O’Hara 106) to prove that humor can do more than make someone laugh, but to reinforce the truth. Humor is a natural human behavior that allows people to escape the mundane, laugh at themselves and also the world around them. O’Hara also writes that “comedy can have a profound impact on how we feel, and even how we act” (O’Hara 110). If humor can change the way we think and act, then it consequently has the ability to bring forth social
Humor: Tactic that plays on social group bias. When we laugh at something, we join with people who are of like minds to laugh at the other—the distorted, the unusual, or the exaggerated.
“’Oh, I guess they’re not very dangerous things the ladies have picked out,’” says the county attorney. The men just assume that the women are harmless and do not even look at any of the items. Mrs. Peters gets the box and tries to put it in her purse, but it does not fit. The women can hear the door knob turn as the men head back into the kitchen. Mrs. Hale grabs the box from Mrs. Peters and stuffs it into the pocket of her big coat, just as the men reenter the kitchen.
On the other hand, the Chief, in “The Laughing Man”, experiences a situation in which his hopes slowly died and, in turn, changed into a never-ending path of despair, much like Seymour and Sergeant X. His hopes, in this case, are set within his girlfriend, Mary Hudson (95). Despite having a god-like effect on the children, the Chief is nothing more than a skinny law-student, and must create a fictional in order to compensate for his love-less life. This is exemplified when the narrator states, “his hair-line extremely low, his nose was large and fleshy, and his torso was just about as long as his legs were”, implying that he was less than fortunate when it came to girls (85). However, once Mary Hudson is introduced, she changes the Chief by
Why do we laugh? The question has perplexed philosophers for centuries—prompting countless essays, discourses, and speeches. Quintilian, a first century Roman rhetoric instructor, theorized in his Institutio Oratorio that humor is “independent of art [and] depends on nature and opportunity,” which explains the witty and subtleties of humor in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (358). Humor in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, in accordance with Quintilian's philosophy, results from a delicate balance of personality, or nature, and circumstance but not craft, or a change in personality. The cause of the humor can be attributed to nature and circumstance because in most cases the character does not change their personality; if the character in question does
Never forget to laugh. "If you can laugh at it, you can survive it" (Cosby). Life is difficult for everyone. It is how people deal with these strives and struggle is what matters. Sometimes, the best way to get a break from the hardships of life is to simply laugh with friends and family. It’s a Balance process. Some people can be caught up in life’s problems and forget to laugh. Laughter is the mental medicine for life. Laughter supports the health of the body. Laughter can break up the quietness in a room. Laughter can change the room from black and white to a rainbow of colors. Laughter is a result of looking at something in a positive light. Is the glass half empty or half full? Whatever the circumstance, never underestimate the power of a good giggle. Never forget to laugh.
If there is one way to bring a smile to someone’s face, it is laughter. Funny jokes, comical stunts, sarcasm- Every person is different when it comes to what makes them laugh. Some find dry humor comical. Others think sarcasm or joke-filled ranting are the best. ‘Comedy’ is such a broad term, broad enough to allow everyone to find something they find comical. In fact, ‘comedy’ includes a specific type of drama, one where the protagonist is joyful and happy endings are expected. Comedy is like a drug; it allows you to escape reality. However, in its broadest sense, comedy has only one purpose: comedy makes people smile and
