Season Kirk Cherry Honors Economics 20 November 2017 Think Like A Freak “We’d like to bury the idea that there’s a right way and a wrong way, smart way and foolish way, a red way and a blue way”(Levitt & Dubner). There is not always just one correct answer to find a solution or one right way to think about a problem. In Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J Dubner’s Think Like A Freak, shows different ways to problem solve through different situations and issues. Think Like A Freak offers opportunity and insight on how to problem solve, it also takes you out of your normal mindset and Think Like A Freak. Who would think that thinking like a child, or knowing the three hardest words in the english language or even thinking there is an upside to quitting could help you problem …show more content…
The three hardest words in the english language are “I don't know”. It’s easier to make up an answer, then it is just to say “I do not know”. The moral compass that most people have, that makes them think they know exactly what's best in most given situations should be turned off. It’s okay to not know all the answers. “In most cases, the cost of saying “I dont know” is higher than the cost of being wrong at least for the individual”(29). It’s okay to say you don’t know an answer because that motivates you to research it, and find the correct answer. The only way to find a correct answer is by knowing, exactly what the question is asking. If the question that is being asked is wrong, or poorly worded, then the answer that is given will also be wrong. Also, you have to look deeper into the question. For example, if the question asked is about the rise in crime rate you would have to research on what is causing it to rise. Collecting data such as, tighter gun laws, a surging economy, more capital punishment, more police officers, more people sent to prison and the decline of the cocaine market can help you figure out factors

Chapter four of Freakonomics starts off by giving background information of the dictator in Romania. Nicolae Ceausescu was the dictator of Romania that made abortion illegal. With this new abortion law Ceausescu wanted to strengthen Romania’s population. Before the abortion law, there were four abortions to every live birth (Levitt and Dubner, 2009). However, women who already had four children and were apart of the communist party were exempt from this law. Within one year of this act the population had doubled. Studies had shown that people who were born after the abortion law would do worse in school, in work, and would sometimes be more likely to become
This fictional story, Lusus Laturae, is written by Margaret Atwood. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the origin of the Lusus Naturae is from Latin and the meaning is “freak of nature.” That is direct enough to assume the story is about a monster figure that will be a symbol of the story. According to the book “Freak of Nature,” the history of freak of nature to scientists and philosophers is an unfortunate, grotesque creature because it is odd or abnormal such as a conjoined twin which has two heads and shared a body (Blumberg 5). The criterion of being odd or abnormal starts from the visual difference seen by people. In the story, through the narration and point of view, character, symbol and figurative language, plot, and setting, it is revealed that the society and even the family ostracizes the protagonist who is defined as a monster due to her different appearance from others.
This chapter's main idea is that the study of economics is the study of incentives. We find a differentiation between economic incentives, social incentives and moral incentives. Incentives are described in a funny way as "means of urging people to do more of a good thing or less of a bad thing", and in this chapter we find some examples public school teachers in Chicago, sumo wrestling in Japan, take care center in Israel and Paul Feldman's bagel business of how incentives drive people and most of the time the conventional wisdom turns to be "wrong" when incentives are in place.
If you had a fear only you could understand would you tell people? Would you think other people would find it silly? Fear is something everyone has, Mary Seymour writes about her fears of sharing personal information in her story “Call Me Crazy But I Have To Be Myself.”I also have fears that have stopped me from being myself. It takes a long road to recovery from fears to get where you want to be.
Quitting for me would lead to anxiety and even more frustration. Then I had an epiphany and realized that all my selections were about a mindset. A mindset consisting of an active mental state of transcending—refining and redefining processes or surrendering—a
"Anybody living in the United States in the early 1990s and paying even a whisper of attention to the nightly news or a daily paper could be forgiven for having been scared out of his skin... The culprit was crime. It had been rising relentlessly - a graph plotting the crime rate in any American city over recent decades looked like a ski slope in profile... Death by gunfire, intentional and otherwise, had become commonplace, So too had carjacking and crack dealing, robbery, and rape. Violent crime was a gruesome and constant companion...
Being able to determine the difference between normal and abnormal behavior is crucial in psychology, but how can someone judge someone’s sanity? It is difficult to put boundaries on such a “soft” area, but there are certain criteria to help in diagnosis. One factor is Bizarreness of the Behavior, which depends greatly on the context in which the behavior occurs. Another is Persistence of Behavior. People can show abnormal behavior without having a mental health problem. However when that abnormal behavior is exhibited on a regular basis, a mental health problem may be present. Another criterion is Subjective Distress, when people are aware of their own psychological difficulties and the distress it brings them. Psychological Handicap is the term used when the subject finds it impossible to be content with life because of their psychological troubles. These are all guidelines to help depict normal and abnormal behavior in psychology.
The movie Freaky Friday explores the extent to which a parent and a child understands each other while maintaining a healthy relationship. The movie begins with the mother-daughter relationship between fifteen year old, Anna and her mother Tess who seem to have a rough time understanding each other’s differences. However, after a harsh argument in a Chinese restaurant, they receive strange fortunes that causes an illusion of an earthquake. As a result of these fortunes, when they wake up the next morning, it appears that Anna and Tess have switched bodies. Unable to switch back, they are forced to act as one another until they can accomplish what their fortune read which leads them to better understand each other’s lives. Overall, Freaky Friday focused on parenting styles, types of families and socialization through the process of Anna and Tess trying to comprehend one another.
In order to develop a fixed negative reinforcement schedule, I divided my cigarettes into groups allowing myself only three cigarettes a day. I placed my daily ration of cigarettes into envelopes and labeled them for each day of the week. I smoked one cigarette after lunch, one after dinner, and one later at night. I would reward myself with a cigarette after attending classes and eating lunch. I would then reward myself with another cigarette after homework and dinner. Through the course of my week, I violated my regimen only twice. On Wednesday and Friday, I “bummed’ a cigarette from one of my friends. After feeling guilty about violating my regimen, I repented for hours, and swore to myself that I was going to beat my addiction. Primary negative reinforcers also helped me stick with the plan such as improved stamina during physical exercise and more money in my pocket.
When one is asked with a question with deep thought some may ponder upon the answer, whereas others may answer in haste and appear foolish even though they believe they have come to the correct conclusion. A situation where this happens is in Socrates dialogue of Hipparchus, in this dialogue a citizen of Athens and Socrates, a philosopher have contradicting views of what a lover of gain is. Socrates asks a citizen of Athens, “So what is the love of gain?”(225a) and who are those lovers of gain. The comrade, what the citizen is called by in the text, replies saying the lovers of gain are someone who think they should gain from worthless things. However, Socrates knows that does not seem logical, it does make sense for a person to think they

Like Rose I was also placed into classes that didn 't help me out in any other way. Classes like ELL (English language learning) and some require course like art, and some repeat classes from middle school like us history. I like history, but I don 't like classes that teaches the same subject over again. I don 't dislike ELL, but feel like it limited student ability to be creative. Having to be taught boring diction and punctuation over and over again from one ELL class to another. The classes I was put in didn 't engaged me. up till high school where I could partially take any class I want, but still was forced into an art class for two school years. I decide to write about Mike Rose piece because I had similar experience in my education.
Ways people quit smoking are by mental and note form reminders of why they are quitting, rewarding themselves, distraction, using gum or healthy snacks e.g celery and carrots, exercise, drinking cool water and nicotine patches or supplements.
