In this exquisite artwork named, “The Turning Road”, by Andre Derain, there are many elements of art shows many different type of lines, shape, texture, space, light, and color. This artwork has an automatic drawing that looks random and adventurous. I can see that the two-dimensional of the tree trunk and branches which have the outline of a cylinder and rectangle. There are vertical, horizontal, diagonal lines used to emphasize in this drawing like, the curvy tree trunk and the diagonal branches that stick out of the tree. Also the thin short lines are displayed behind the big thick tree trunk to avoid attention and let us in-version that there are many more enormous tree nearby. The lines were used in the picture to create a tonal variation and simulate texture. “The curving road, the tree trunks and branches, and the choreographed forms of villager all sway to an integrated rhythm”, that focus our attention of how the artist utilized lines to create a freeform way which add excitement to the design. He also applied different colors to shimmer in flat shapes in order to make the landscape come more alive and the expressive feeling of the villagers. The shapes of the house and road have a smooth and rounded angle that appears to be distorted. I don’t see any three-dimensional form that was use in this painting, however, the artist tend to portray a different angles that allow the viewer to see certain things like the trees and curved road to stand out and grab the viewer attention. The opposites are made to create a vibrant object to balance out the color in the painting, like the straight lines were used to make many of tree trunks, bridges, and houses; therefore curved lines were located in the top brushes of the tree, the thickness of the arc that makes the turning road simply enhanced by the thickness of it edges. Also, the use of complementary colors used in this painting gives a warm and cooling temperature to grasp the village surroundings. The thick lines in the tree trunks in the far right draw the attention to the front of the painting were most of the action seem to be taking place, which also create the shape to be smoother as the left turn on the road curve over the village.
The house is surrounded by green grass which makes the image more realistic and the trees in the background and the tree in the foreground create a sense of depth. The image is quite well spaced out, due to a vast amount of area situated between objects. There is a visual equality in the symmetrical image. There is a contrast between the colours of the image to draw attention to the house. The image looks to be taken in the dusk of the afternoon, where there is not much natural light, which creates a darker tone. The main emphasis of the image is the house, which seems to be quite different when the image is first seen by a viewer. The texture helps emphasize the main focal point seeing though it is quite smooth, the colour also creates a mood towards the image and atmosphere in the image. There are a number of Mexicans who look to cross the border to the United States because they are in trouble and they must do whatever they can in order to survive. Regardless of this, citizens of the United States immediately ask for the heads of illegal immigrants and jump to conclusions that these people are crude and selfish although they are just trying to support their families. Since the beginning of the United States the American people have been on the move. Public transportation has played a major role in the development of this nation and in bringing its citizens together. In the book “Divided Highways”, author Tom Lewis takes the reader on a journey of the building of the Interstates and the consequences(good and bad) that came from them. Lewis believes that the Interstates are a physical characteristic of America and that it shows “all our glory and our meanness; all our vision and our shortsightedness”(xiv).

Suburban life in the 1950s was ideal, but not ideal for the women. Women were continuously looked at as the typical suburban housewife. In Richard Yates’ novel, Revolutionary Road, we are given the chance to see the dynamics of the Wheeler family and of those around them. Through the use of theme, tone and major symbolism in the novel, we are shown the perspective of gender roles in the 1950s. The author shows the reader the struggles of strict gender roles and how the protagonist of the story will do just about anything to escape from it.
I have conflicting thought regarding Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road. My initial thoughts of the novel were that it was solely built on the complete devastation of two characters lives and the surrounding landscape and their constant search for survival. However after giving it further insight I discovered the underlying messages of the importance of good and bad people in my life, the beauty of the little things in life and constant greed showed by desperate individuals. I believe the novels successes comes from the messages of the significant value of human life and the importance of memories in our lives.

The painting Olive Trees, now at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, is one of a series of ten or twelve paintings of olive orchards, which Van Gogh painted in 1889 while living at the asylum of Saint-Remy. This painting is a landscape accomplished in bright, complementary colors, with Van Gogh’s characteristically brisk brushwork. The image is divided roughly into thirds, with the middle zone, the trees, being highly capricious. The brushstrokes describe the lay of the land, the movement of the wind in the trees, and the rays of the sun. The sun itself is hugely misrepresented in size, and highlighted also by an outline of orange. It dominates the picture and takes on perhaps a “supernatural” aspect, possibly representing deity or faith. The curved trees all lean, even quiver, away from the center of the painting. They cast violet shadows which shouldn’t be possible, given the placement of the sun: Realism is sacrificed for the content. The most prominent of these shadows is at the center of the foreground, and is not associated with any one tree. One could see this central shadow as the thing from which the trees are bending. The base of each tree is painted with red lines that ambiguously outline where the shadows would fall if the sun were directly overhead.
