Analysis Of The Song Chasing Cars By Snow Patrol

Dear Germanna English Professors, The song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol is a piece of art that I have grown up to love over the years of listening to it. When I first heard this song, I was young and didn’t understand the concept of love and relationships. I just liked the tune and listened to it often. My first interpretation of this song was that Gary Lightbody (the singer of Snow Patrol) lost someone and was missing them, especially when they played the song many times on Grey’s Anatomy for whenever someone important to the show died. When I listened to it again without thinking of my previous interpretation, I started to believe that it is a love song, and he just wants to sit down and enjoy the little things with someone he loves. After I changed my interpretation of the song, I analyzed the context and the tone of Lightbody’s words.

One of the lines in the song is “…show me a garden bursting into life…” With the technology we have today, between fast cars and the internet, I believe he is just trying to escape the busyness of the world and enjoy something that few people take the time to stop and enjoy, such as a garden or a beautiful view from the top of a mountain.

Another line of the song is "...those three words are said too much, they're not enough..." To me, Lightbody said this because the three words he was referring to, I love you, are not enough to express his love for this person. These words are used so much today that the true meaning of them has become somewhat meaningless at times. It has become an automatic response to certain situations when one doesn't know what to say. As silly as it sounds, this song resonates with me because in the past two years I have come to know one of the greatest people in my

life. He’s there for me when I need him, and he supports me in the things I do. I love doing the little things and taking a break from the big world of technology. Something as simple as walking through the neighborhood or even doing homework together is just as enjoyable as sitting down and watching a movie. I don’t care what we are doing just as long as I can do it with him. We as people don’t need to always be attached and connected to one another through the web. To enjoy quality time with someone, you have to get together with them and go do something other than look at a screen. Go on a walk. Watch a sunset or even watch the clouds roll by. Do something other than having a phone or other device in your face. The true beauty of a relationship, not just a romantic one, is the time spent with that person. In the future, you’re not going to remember that one text they sent you, but you’re going to remember the day you took a hike and watched the sun set behind the trees. Another friend of mine showed me that the little things in life make a big difference. She doesn’t have to do something specific to enjoy time with you, she just cares that she’s there spending time with you.
