Stephen Covey is the author of several books that have dominated the business world, and everyone for that matter. In fact, according to Martin’s (2012) article, Covey’s book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People has sold over 25 million copies and over a million audiobooks. There is a large percentage of Fortune 500 companies that turn to this book for its advice that Covey points out as were the reasons behind efficacy of good behavior; he often is found stating that he believed everything in this book was knowledge everyone already knew, but just did not practice. I personally chose to cover this book due to my undergraduate degree being related to business; I wished to share it with others and hope to spread the impact it can make by pointing out the obvious. I also was given this book upon graduation, but never paid much attention to it, it has been ignored for far too long and I am working on incorporating these habits into my daily life.
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is written in a way that, if it is acted out in everyday life, will improve not only the original reader, but everyone who is to come in contact with that individual. It clearly relates each habit to one another, and gives plenty of examples to ensure the reader fully understands the concept, instead of gaining an idea of what the point is. Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.

A Few Keys to All Success by Jim Muncy, published in 2002 explains that there are 7 universal keys to success that we can relate to everyday life. Discernment, Optimism, Responsibility, Initiative, Perseverance, Purpose, Sacrifice. Each one represents how we grow and teaches us how to have a high quality of life. From reading this book I am confident because I know being normal means being average and what we do can change how we act significantly. Also we can’t let the world hold us back from greatness. There will be negativity, there will be those who lack enthusiasm but you can’t let them interfere in what you have in store. And these keys will help you get to that point in your life. Habitudes has taught very important lessons to new leaders and leaders that need a little help. Also habitudes help leaders influence others in positive ways, helps minimize bullying, helps people understand their character, and develop critical thinking skills. Some chapter lessons that stood out are The Iceberg, The Starving Baker, The Funhouse Mirror, The Oversized Gift, and The Personal Laptop. All of these habitudes show how to be a good leader and how to act when you are a leader.

I will use what I have learned from this book in the future by creating more urgency in myself when I know that something needs to be changed. Also, if I ever find myself in a position of leadership, I will be sure that every employee working for me understands why we need the change, supports it, and has a sense of urgency to get it done. Next, it will help me be more careful about my communication, and making sure that everything I do, verbally and nonverbally, should be showing that I am incredibly dedicated to the change that I am trying to introduce. Although some individuals seem to exhibit leadership skills naturally, most of us will have to work at developing and refining our leadership skills through classes, experience, and introspection. This paper will examine my responses to the Seven Habits Profile (Covey, n.d.) as they relate to my leadership strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement. I know I must make these habits and the principles listed in my mission statement a part of my life and the only way to do that is to live them.
