In E.E. Cummings poem “dying is fine) but Death”, the poet talks about the the ever discussed topic about dying and Death itself. Cummings talks about how dying is something to look forward to and how it is inevitable, from the moment we are born, to the fateful day it occurs. I agree with this analysis and the author’s analysis of the poem. Cummings uses his legendary shape style to form “dying is fine) but Death” to show how life begins. He may have wanted to symbolize the start of life with “o baby” which if you look at the paper version of the book, “o baby” is split up and very small compared to other sentences in the poem, signifying the start of someone’s life. In the poem, if you don’t stop and think over what you are reading, you will miss the big picture and not enjoy it as much. In Life, if you keep thinking about the big goal in your mind, then you forget to stop and cherish the little things, making Life that much harder to get through. I found in my own analysis that the poem switches from a sort of sweetness to dying, but to Death the tone is completely bitter and makes Death seem evil, because in the poem it is. Death is seen as many things to different people. To E.E. Cummings, Death is the bad guy, the black sheep. Dying is the good guy, the normal family member. Addie is actually the perfect character to try and describe the lack or void of words and meanings. The very fact that she is dead and is talking about this void from the dead is important. In a way she is speaking from a void between life and death. Emily Dickinson likes to use many different forms of poetic devices and Emily's use of irony in poems is one of the reasons they stand out in American poetry. In her poem 'Because I could not stop for Death,' she refers to 'Death' in a good way. Dickinson states in the poem that 'He kindly stopped for me --' (1103, 2). Death is not commonly known as being 'kind', which leads us to believe that Dickinson used this line to hint that death was a good thing. In the entire poem, she does not refer to death in a negative way. This shows more irony since death is often feared by many, either regarding themselves or other. In the first stanza we can see that all the words fit together and they express the same feeling. We can clearly see that the beginning of each line is not capitalized and that some thoughts are stopped, such as “to” and “attention” from line to line. When looking at the second stanza there is assonance. In the phrase “and kisses are a better fate” (Cummings, 1931, L.8) the “e” sound is the same in these words. We can see assonance again in the line “wholly to be a fool while spring is in the world” (Cummings, 1931, L.5-6) the “o” sounds in the words “to” and “fool” are the same. Cummings wrote the stanzas like this to show that the poem is meant to be tied together. Personification is also used in the third stanza "my blood approves"(Cummings, 1931, L7) giving human characteristics to something non-human.
