“Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty. When you are lost, you are not alone.” —Father Flynn. On October 2, 2015 at 7:30 P.M. in the Trahern Theatre, I went to see the play Doubt: A Parable. It was very successful at how the elements of the play brought it to life. It made you feel like you were actually a part of the whole play and not just an audience member. All the actors, scenery, costumes, lights, and sounds were very effective how it brought the play to life. The actor who portrayed Father Flynn was Zachery Schaflein; the way he represented that role was exactly the way I imagined the priest would perform. He played the role effectively in how he portrayed his character in each scene. In act one, scene one and six Zachery was giving a sermon to the church; he made the audience believe they were actually in a catholic church listening to the priest give his sermon for the week. He did not just stand behind the podium stiff as a board using the same old soothing voice; he would walk around, use hand gestures, and raise his voice during the scenes. Then, in act one, scene three he was coaching the boys on how to …show more content…
Her acting was spot on; she used different tones in her voice while having conversations with the other actors and she made her personality very lively. For example in act one, scene five Allison made her voice sound like she was super nervous, when Sister Aloysius was confronting Father Flynn about Donald Muller, by making her voice become shaky and rasp. When she kept asking Father Flynn if he wanted more tea she would be jumpy in her seat; she would not sit still during this scene. Another illustration on how Allison convinced the audience on how well she can act, was in act one scene seven when she opened up to Father Flynn about her brother and how she cannot sleep anymore; it actually seemed like she was having a hard time by the way she let the audience see
As far as acting, the performers were able to convey the feelings they needed to. However, some characters such as Ol' Cap'n played by Dick Lambert and Luttibelle played by April Curry, seemed more committed and engaging in their roles than others. A crucial factor in April Curry portraying her role so well was her vocal talent far exceeded that of any of the other major performers. She had an amazing voice that I was dazzled by from curtain up to down and left me craving for more. This almost compensated for my disappointment when it came to the ensemble singing to the soundtrack. Many performers were dependent on the cd and were not confident as to when to begin or stop singing, which dampered many moments of the performers. Another element of acting that I enjoyed was the exaggerated use of cooning throughout the duration of the performance that brought characters to life, and enabled certain moments to seem real.
The play “Doubt” by John Patrick Shanley began with a sermon by Father Brendan Flynn, a well liked and enlightened neighborhood priest, who says, "Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty". (Shanley 6) Sister Aloysius Beauvier is a strict traditional nun, who was declared to protect and secure St. Nicholas Church School. Father Flynn seems to be the protagonist in the play and Sister Aloysius is the antagonist. The whole play, sister Aloysius Beauvier suspected Father Flynn of molesting a 12-year-old boy named Donald Muller, who is the first African-American student in the St. Nicholas Church School. I think that Sister Aloysius’s overreacting, because Father Flynn is innocent. In the middle of these two characters, Sister James is a young and innocent teacher who wants to be neutral between the conflict of Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn.
The differences between the movie doubt and the play have significant differences that would influence ones opinion about certain characters and situations in the story. Though the differences are few one would agree that at least one of these differences are game changers or at the very least they get you thinking and having doubts of your own.
... Nonetheless, the signs also point to Father Flynn hurting him, because he was violating him. People’s assumptions are based upon personal experience and gut feeling, also on their upbringing; nature and nurture. Shanley uses inference in this play to create doubt in the audience’s minds'. The verdict is never in, on Flynn; guilty or not guilty. Shanley’s audience is left to be the jury.
In this world rumors and dishonesty happen to be everywhere, no matter where you are. Nowaday people start rumors just to hurt and insult people’s feelings that later on lead to dramatic events. In the story “Much Ado about Nothing”, we encounter different scenes that lead to rumors and deception. One scene that we encounter is when Don John, the bastard brother spreads rumors about Hero being disloyal to Claudio and Don Pedro to corrupt Claudio’s and Hero’s relationship. Another scene that we run into is when Ursula and Hero have a talk in the garden about how Benedick has love affection towards Beatrice. Later on, these two scenes play a huge role and become dramatic elements of the story. We will encounter on how rumors and dishonesty can destroy and corrupt not just one person, but many.
The Tragedy of Macbeth is a fictional play written by English poet William Shakespeare. The play is set in eleventh century Scotland, during the reign of King James the first. Shakespeare evidently writes in this time period to describe the link between leaders and their supreme or ultimate power. The play was first performed in the year 1606, at the world famous Globe Theatre, and is considered one of the most profound and compelling tragedies ever told. The Tragedy of Macbeth tells the tale of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth and his ambitious desire to become king of Scotland. While he and another commander named Banquo return home from war they stumble into three hagged looking witches. The witches offer the men an enticing prophecy that leads to a more pivotal role found later in the play. Throughout the play Macbeth is seen confronting his own moral ambiguity to the heinous acts he must perform to get the position he most desires. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, [s]hakes so my single state of man” (Shakespeare 1.3.152-53). This uncertainty, present in the scenes of Duncan’s murder, the feast, and the witch’s final predictions each unfold the ambiguity needed to understand the basis of the work as a whole.
The most successful aspect of the performance for me were the scene changes. I found that the rotation of the blackboard, center stage, where the actors were able to stoop beneath it in order to enter and exit the stage, was an effective touch to this non naturalistic performance. When this was first used, at the end of the first scene, when the characters Ruth and Al left the stage, I thought it didn't quite fit as at the beginning the style was leaning towards realism. But as the play progressed and the acting style became more and more non naturalistic, and this rotation of the black board technique was used more frequently it fitted in really well and became really effective.
Shakespeare’s Hamlet is widely regarded as one of the greatest tragedies in English literature. Written near the turn of the 17th century, there were new branches of Christianity appearing and the traditional Roman Catholic hold on power was waning, throwing the whole of Europe was in religious chaos. Nonetheless, the existence of a supreme being known as God was recognized in any branches, and strict adherence to religion was necessary for all the people of that age. It is important to examine the historical setting to fully understand some of the play’s subtler connotations. The protagonist of the play, Hamlet, is one of the most famous tragic heroes in existence, but the character’s fatal flaw is that he does not believe in God sufficiently.
The movie leaves little to viewers' imaginations. In order to be entertained by literature or art, the viewer needs to feel that they can use their imagination and not be confined to a plot that reveals all. In the parable Doubt, the controversial topics presented by John Patrick Shanley sparked differing views that the reader was torn between. It introduced a storyline revolved around a nun accusing a pastor of partaking in inappropriate engagement amongst the alter boys. Since the plot was open-ended and there were no pulmonary guidelines, the reader resolved to using their imagination to deem what direction, and whom they would agree with.... ...

In scene three the witches approach Banquo and Macbeth when they were on their way to Forres. The witches inform Macbeth and Banquo about what had happened in the kings court and they tell him he is the Thane of Cawdor and Glamis and that Macbeth will eventually become king. Written in 1962-3, Play depicts three characters, a man (M), and two women (W1 and W2) trapped in urns with only their heads showing. These characters each present their own version of a love triangle, which once occurred between them. It becomes clear during the play that the characters, once tortured by each other, are now tortured by their situation. A spotlight acts as a "unique inquisitor," compelling each to speak when it shines on them, and to stop when it goes out. As this assault continues, the characters become increasingly maddened by the light, and increasingly desperate to make it stop. The play repeats itself, providing the audience with a sense that these characters have been saying the same words for an eternity, and will continue to do so until the light decides they can stop. Beckett demonstrates how "A style of living, theatrically communicable, is used to express a state of mind."
The introduction is the part that has been used to explain the situation that is taking place. In this, Macbeth has the first two scenes. In the first scene, the audience is introduced to a mystical atmosphere which is to be prevalent in the whole play. The second scene is a description of the brave deeds of Macbeth, who is made a man who is to yield supernatural soliciting (Shakespeare, 55). This is shown when the king makes an attribute to Macbeth by saying
In drama Hamlet, Shakespeare showed Hamlet in " war " for women. In the family, the son is " Hamlet " whose wish is suppressed both by his spiritual father (Superego) and by his corporeal father and whose Ego is torn between two fathers as between his good angel and his bad angel. Hamlet whose conscious mind, is in the conflict with his unconscious mind, while his intellect seems healthily above and his positions of real ego as a madman below, attracted by Gertrud , that is displaced occasionally by Ophelia, and suppressed by his parents. This way, the play is “ the strange eruption of Hamlet, ” that he gets torn between the attraction and the repression and he leaves the various expression on the mind of his reader. His “disposition of prank” (I, v, 180) has been disconcerting to the people about him. His speech and his behavior often seem inscrutable.
The play Macbeth was wrote by William Shakespeare in 1606. The play Macbeth was a myth though in the time of Shakespeare there was a king Duncan and his successor was a Scottish noble man by the name of Macbeth but people are positive that nothing else was true.
William Shakespere 's tragedy of Hamlet is a story of revenge and distress involving Hamlet Jr, the prince of Denmark. The plot of the play focuses on Hamlet 's quest to avenge his father 's death. Hamlet learns that his father did not die accidentally, as the public believed, and that his Uncle Claudius is the one who murdered his father. Claudius then hastily married Hamlet 's mother and became king. Hamlet is an archetypical example of a tragic hero. He starts out as a noble and virtuous character and then confronts challenges that expose his tragic flaws which lead to his downfall. Hamlet 's tragic flaws are making rash decisions as well as being overly contemplative.
