The film whiplash, present an idea on what teens face during college, who are looking to give up after being thrown in directions they never been before. Having the opportunities that people have to offer to achieve their goals during college is helpful, and motivating even if it seems like it’s so hard to reach. Andrew a young teenager who had the love of the music in his blood since he was a kid, becoming a percussion player was not something his parents really wanted him to do, unlike his brother who would play football, get trophies they wanted Andrew to do something entertaining like his brother. Going to the University of Shaffer top rank music school, who started in the lowest part of the band group wasn’t stopping Andrew from achieving his goals. One major goal was to be known as the best drummer, and be playing in the JVC jazz musical, and getting spotted by Fletcher the teacher who was also a great musician himself. Andrew would practice on the daily basis in his dorm were he would make sure he would hit every note as it read. Sweat, tears would go into the drum during his practices just to be notice by Fletcher, who finally notices him playing well on the drums. Fletcher tells Andrew to show him how to play a couple swings, so he can know what his about. After teasing Andrew, fletcher goes to the lower band class to give the students a chance to move up to his jazz band, which he shows his ego. Andrew gets invited to go to practice next morning at 6am when class usually at a later time, he waited to show his skills on the drums, Andrew waited for the class to begin for more than 6 hours to have the opportunity to show his skills on the drums. Fletcher would test Andrews skills by yelling at him seeing if he was patient enough to take responsibilities, and see how he can handle being yelled at while playing drums testing his focus. This would make Andrew cry, only push himself more to learn all the songs, memorize all the songs so he wouldn’t have to look at the music notes. After days of breaking sweats in the dorm, skin on his fingers, and almost giving up he manages to learn every song. After showing up to practice they had a performance and fletcher was very hard on never to lose your music folder, because you will never play and you would be disrespecting him. In the article “The Case against College,” Linda Lee argues that upper-level education should only be for those who intend to go into jobs where a degree is essential such as medicine, law, and education. Lee dismantles the hope for higher education for those who are unsure of what they want to do or simply see it as the next step in life. Lee’s case is not specifically about why not to go to college; it is more about who belongs there and who does not. Receiving a degree, especially in the creative department of the music industry, may not be as important as society makes it out to be. Creativity is natural, and people are born with ingenuity; it cannot be taught. Lee’s argument is very fitting to those in the field of music. As a music business major, pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter, it is common knowledge that success in the music industry depends upon whom you know and how talented you are, not whether or not you have a degree.
In the essay “Achievement of Desire”, author Richard Rodriguez, describes the story of our common experience such as growing up, leaving home, receiving an education, and joining the world. As a child, Rodriguez lived the life of an average teenager raised in the stereotypical student coming from a working class family. With the exception, Rodriguez was always top of his class, and he always spent time reading books or studying rather than spending time with his family or friends. This approach makes Rodriguez stand out as an exceptional student, but with time he becomes an outsider at home and in school. Rodriguez describes himself as a “scholarship boy” meaning that because of the scholarships and grants that he was receiving to attend school; there was much more of an expectation for him to acquire the best grades and the highest scores. As a fan of cinema, I was excited to do this project on what I had remembered as a touching portrait on racism in our modern society. Writer/Director Paul Haggis deliberately depicts his characters in Crash within the context of many typical ethnic stereotypes that exist in our world today -- a "gangbanger" Latino with a shaved head and tattoos, an upper-class white woman who is discomforted by the sight of two young Black kids, and so on -- and causes them to rethink their own prejudices during their "crash moment" when they realize the racism that exists within themselves.

In the Oscar award winning movie Crash, directed by Paul Haggis, a network of characters portray the lifestyles of different races in Los Angeles. In the movie, characters “crash” into one another, similar to pinballs, to spur new emotions and explain their actions. A main character Anthony, an African American male, steadily tries to prove why he does not and will not fall into the black male thug stereotype. He was slightly close minded and repeatedly had a negative outlook towards his environment. Anthony created contradictions between what he said and what his actual intentions were. His actions were guided by his environment and further analysis of them will prove his motivation.
People flock to horror movies each year. Usually to be scared. Another is to solve the question of Who done it? Unfortunately, a lot of these horror movies fail to scare people or make the killer so obvious the audience gets bored. Occasionally, there are a few horror movies that stick out. Scream, directed by Wes Craven, is one of them. Wes Craven is always toying with the viewer's fears. Always finding ways to scare the audience at every turn. In Paul Toughmay’s “Who Gets to Graduate,” he follows a young first year college student, Vanessa Brewer, explaining her doubts, fears, and emotions while starting her college journey. As a student, at the University of Texas Brewer feels small and as if she doesn’t belong. Seeking advice from her family she calls her mom but after their conversation Brewer feels even more discouraged. Similar to Brewer I have had extreme emotions, doubts, and fears my freshman year in college.

To satisfy my interest in learning about music and how to play musical instruments, I had to find a source of education other than school; a great depiction in agreement with Graff’s claim that students are being limited by not considering their interests when creating curricula (Graff 197). In conclusion, education is broader than just falling into what the contemporary school system has to offer. Both Gatto and Graff proved this by explaining how conforming students to certain perspectives of education limits their potential in other educational branches that interest the students.
For this assignment, the movie “The Help” was chosen to review and analyze because it presents a story of fighting injustice through diverse ways. The three main characters of the movie are Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, a young white woman, Aibileen Clark, and Minny Jackson, two colored maids. Throughout the story, we follow these three women as they are brought together to record colored maids’ stories about their experiences working for the white families of Jackson. The movie explores the social inequalities such as racism and segregation between African Americans and whites during the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi.
