The movie I chose for this assignment was called The Pistol: The Birth of a Legend. This movie was about a young boy by the name of Pete Maravich who had a dream to become a great basketball player like his father Press Maravich. However, during this process he was faced with adversity of being too short and too flashy but he overcame the adversity he faced and became a hall of fame basketball player. Pete was dedicated to the game and no matter the weather outside he was out working on his skills even in a thunderstorm. During this moment when Pete is out working on his game in the thunderstorm his father pulls up in his car and gets out to play one-on-one with him. Despite it being a thunderstorm outside and his son is out in the thunderstorm …show more content…
Also, Pete father would say, “A good basketball player can make up for a lot if he has hands as fast as a gun fire” then he would get Pete to do a drill where held a basketball at the bottom of his neck and Pistol has to clap his hands in front of him then catch the ball when his father drops the basketball (Schroeder, 1991). Pete was not very successful when first trying this drill and so Pete’s mother told Pet’s father Press that it’s impossible and so the father completed this drill just to show his son that it was possible. Pete father just stayed on his son about confidence and the difference between thinking you can do something and knowing you could do something. Press Maravich believed that if you knew you could do something then most likely you would succeed at the task at …show more content…
Pete’s parents were always at his games whether he was playing or not to let him know that they were there to support him through the tough and good times. When Pete finally got his opportunity to play he went in the game and threw a no look pass but his teammate was not ready and the ball bounced off his head and out of bounds which led to Pete’s team losing the game. Later that night Pete was in the gym shooting and his father walks in the gym and tells his son that he didn’t lose the game for his team and that the pass he threw to his team mate was a perfect pass. Pete’s father trusted him and would encourage him through his mistakes to let him know that he has a gift and he’s on the way to achieve great achievements if he would keep practicing and dedicating himself to the game. Also, his parents were truthful to let him know that they didn’t have the money to pay for college for him but they knew he had the talent to earn a basketball scholarship that would pay for his
In the nonfiction book My Losing Season by Pat Conroy, he mainly expresses all the trials and tribulations he goes through as a child and in his current livelihood as senior at Citadel college. Conroy never had a good relationship with his father, no matter what he did the constant banter and hurtful play from his father always lingered. Conroy had a military family which meant that they were constantly moving every year to two years, this never gave him the chance to really settle in with the community and create steady friendships. This also made it hard for him to adjust to the way that certain area played basketball and how well he fit in with the teams. Basketball made him happy and having such an all-star basketball player as a father
“Pistol” Pete Maravich is the highest scorer in College basketball history he had 3,667 points in his four year career at LSU. In the middle portion of the book it started talking about Pete’s middle school and high school basketball memories and his great achievements. The next portion of the book spoke about Pete’s college offers and his tough decision to choose which one to attend. Another part of the book really got into the life of Pete’s brother Ronnie. Finally the last part of the book I read spoke about Pete’s legendary College basketball career. After going over this portion of the book it was easy to connect with Pete’s
Pete Maravich was one of the greatest basketball players of all time. His spectacular moves and awesome footwork helped him to get better everyday. His incredible passes and being able to control the court caused his teammates to like him even more. “His playground moves, circus shots, and hotdog passes were considered outrageous during his era” (NBA Encyclopedia Playoff Edition). His love for basketball was instilled by his father Peter “Press” Maravich.
The film that interested me for this assignment was “Boyz n the Hood”. The movie was about a Los Angeles neighborhood expanding of drug and gang culture, with increasingly tragic results. It was about how one teen had family support to guide him on the right path in life regarding the social problems around him. The other two teens in the film wasn’t as fortunate and fell into the social problems of drugs, violence, and gangs; where one ended up dead.
A genre is a type or category of film (or other work of art) that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. (Goodykoontz, 2014) The gangster film is a sub-genre of the broader genre of crime film. A genre main objective is to classify the depiction of entertainment. The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma. An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. (Scarface, 1983a)
Stoddard and his struggle with morality and justice. The film opens with Stoddard and his wife Hallie returning to Shinbone, a small town in the west, for Tom Doniphon’s funeral. In a flashback that spans most of the film, Stoddard recounts how Doniphon, a relatively unknown man, became so important to him, a famous, well respected senator. 25 years ago, Stoddard was beaten up and left by the road by Liberty Valance, leader of a notorious gang. Doniphon found Stoddard and brought him back to Shinbone, explaining that Stoddard’s position as a lawyer meant nothing if he couldn’t handle a gun. Throughout the film, Stoddard struggled with this Western lifestyle, and
Full Metal Jacket is written and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film was released in 1987 and it is starring Matthew Modine (Joker), Vincent D’Onofrio (Pyle), Adam Baldwin (Animal), and R. Lee Ermey ( Guy.Segr. Hartman).
With more and more children participating in some sort of organized sport than ever before, there is a constant concern regarding the pressures kids are brought into to excel. Emotionally over-involved parents often think that it is their responsibility to persuade, push, or support the children's fantasies or sporting objectives, even if the kids themselves do not share the same aspirations as his/her parents. Part of growing up is learning what interests you the most. It's how one becomes familiar with who they really are and what they enjoy doing in life. Unfortunately, for many young children, his/her parents seem to take his/her own lives into their own hands. Most parents want their kids to grow up to be "superstars", make it big after the college scenario, and perhaps go on to play professionally or succeed in the Olympics. We all know that there are the few that make it professionally, and having your parent paint a picture for you as you're barely going into grade school is unethical. Yet for the unfortunate, these kids are helpless to the pressure that is put on them at such a young age. Take Todd Marinovich, for example. For the child's entire life he was exercised, fed, schooled, and drilled with his fathers' one g...

In this movie the main character Tyler seems to be a disturbed angry unhappy young man. Not because he is a bad person, no it is because he is a kind and sensitive boy who hoped for a better more connected life for himself and his family. The death of his elder brother by suicide and the separation of his family caused him to lose hope in life and succeeding.
Many movies out there are based on a lot of things such as true stories. Some are about the paranormal, history, or even sports. Sports bring people together the most because they are almost always about overcoming a greater force. The film that I am writing about is one that is very good and touches the heart of many. When the Game Stands Tall was directed by a Thomas Carter. The film is about a high school football team with the best winning streak in the history of sports, a 151 consecutive games and the team members had to face the challenges of defeat and death. The thing that hurt them the most was overcoming the mental challenges.
Hoop Dream is a documentary about two African American kids named William Gates and Arthur Agee, and they are both from the ghetto hoods in Chicago. It was a place often making a lot of good basketball players into the NBA. But have the most realistic, brutal, competition into the film. The two main characters we find in the film turned into outstanding basketball players in their high school. It speaks of the daily life of their families. The theme of the film was about the American family; there was a strong desire coming up with someone’s hope and love. In the selection of the greatest film of the 1990s, Roger Ebert thought this movie was the best documentary of Oscar Award in the meantime. Even they have crashed on the Oscar, and the reason was the movie taken almost 3 hours long. Because of his insistence, the movie still can get the consistently high rate for such a quality objective evaluation.
I remember thinking "This wasn't happening; this couldn't be happening. My best friend, gone. Why her? Why not me? I'm of no use to this planet" I remember feeling a pinch in my arm. Probably a dart, because I couldn't move. something grabbed both of my arms. What was it? It dragged me to the place from which I heard the gun being shot. I couldn't hear anything... I felt something deep inside of me... I still feel it. I felt something shrivel up and die in the place where my heart is supposed to be.... I wish I could die and see her again. At least I'll be able to see her. I wish I could hear her beautiful voice again... She didn't do anything wrong, she was too pure for this world; too pure to leave it! It's
Just like we had learned about in the Parent Presentation Video, Peter’s parents fought for everything. They fought for his education, his future, and, most of all, his happiness. Peter’s happiness was of utmost importance to his parents and all those around him. This demonstrated to me that Peter’s parents know what if really important in life and are worried about teaching their child life skills. They have accepted that Peter will never be like other people and needs to be taught skills to make his unique future as bright as
