For this paper I chose to write about one of my most recent favorite movies, The Heat. The Heat is staring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. I chose this film because every time I watch this movie I feel a sense of “girl power” and also its one of the first movies that came to mind after reviewing what the Bechdel Test was. In this paper I will go over how this movie The Heat passes the Bachdel test and will show you the constant battles that women face when they are working in a male dominated workplace. In this movie Sandra Bullock plays the part of Sarah Ashburn FBI Special who is very highly skilled investigator that is not well liked by fellow investigators because of her conceitedness and arrogance. Ashburn lives alone in New York City and is very much a …show more content…
At the beginning when the two first meet you might guess they are not going to get along because of their complete opposite personalities. Ashburn comes in to the situation very focused and ready to get down to business knowing that if she does well on this case she will get a big promotion. Mullins is not taking team work well and has no desire to work with Ashburn on this drug case even though she knows she has to. This is a huge case they are working on and they both want the respect but they don’t think they need each other to track down this drug kingpin. Ashburn can’t stand Mullins foul mouth or the way she does her work because to her it’s very unorganized. Mullins doesn’t care much for Ashburn either because of the snooty way she comes off and she especially hates the way she dresses and even makes fun of her by calling telling her she looked like a bank teller and Mullins took the scissors to her clothes to make her look not so professional in hopes that she doesn’t blow the case. Soon after Ashburn and Mullins start working with each other and they get over their egos they become very great partners that have a lot of
Led by Laura Mulvey, feminist film critics have discussed the difficulty presented to female spectators by the controlling male gaze and narrative generally found in mainstream film, creating for female spectators a position that forces them into limited choices: "bisexual" identification with active male characters; identification with the passive, often victimized, female characters; or on occasion, identification with a "masculinized" active female character, who is generally punished for her unhealthy behavior. Before discussing recent improvements, it is important to note that a group of Classic Hollywood films regularly offered female spectators positive, female characters who were active in controlling narrative, gazing and desiring: the screwball comedy.
Ken Kesey's award-winning novel, "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", was adapted into a film in 1975 written and directed by New York City native Bo Goldman and Czech director Milos Forman. Towards the end of the novel and film, Chief Bromden escapes from the ward. This scene is conveyed differently in the novel and film; however, there are evident similarities between each form of media. This scene is important to the plot because it wraps up the entire storyline. In the film and novel, similarities within Chief Bromden’s escape from the ward include the way Chief escaped, how he couldn't hear anyone in the ward due to being deaf, and how McMurphy assisted Bromden with gaining his confidence to lift the panel and throw it through the window. McMurphy essentially changed Bromden to help him break out of the asylum and back into the real world.
Sex, love, depression, guilt, trust, all are topics presented in this remarkably well written and performed drama. The Flick, a 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Annie Baker, serves to provide a social commentary which will leave the audience deep in thought well after the curtain closes. Emporia State Universities Production of this masterpiece was a masterpiece in itself, from the stunningly genuine portrayal of the characters of Avery and Rose, to the realism found within the set, every aspect of the production was superb.
The bunch of law-breaking teenagers from 70’s in Brooklyn were presented as a fearsomely resilient and incredulous who brings their own dose of happiness fever every Saturday night.
Silence of the Lambs, is commonly said to be one of the most famous thrillers made. After watching the film for the first time, I noticed the director had many interesting themes and concepts. Some of these themes included, good vs. evil, the search for peace, judging a book by its cover, and gender and sexuality in the workplace. The theme I found most interesting, and what I found the director made most apparent, was gender and sexuality in the workplace. The director showed that gender and sexuality in the workplace was the most noticeable theme because of the constant contrasts set between Clarice and her male co- workers, her continuous denial about her femininity, and the amount of danger Clarice runs into because as a women, she is always having to do things on her own.
When you watch a trailer for a movie you usually notice an actor or two that you have seen before in another movie. An example of this is the movie, The Heat. The two main actresses are, Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, who do a phenomenal job in the bad-cop-good-cop role, but with a twist. Instead of the good-cop-bad-cop role being two male actors, it is done in this movie with two female cops who, in my opinion, do a better job than some of the male role films. The movie starts off with Sandra Bullock meeting Melissa McCarthy on a detective mission to stop a dangerous drug lord named Larkin. Sandra Bullock does an outstanding job of creating her character, Sarah Ashburn. She seems very innocent and sweet at the beginning, but throughout the movie she transforms into an outgoing and methodical detective. Another example of great acting is in the movie, White House Down. The movie stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.
Whether you have heard of the film, Some Like it Hot, or not, it is one of the greatest comedies in movie history. One of the most frequently asked questions about this film is, why? Why is this film one of the best comedies ever made. According to Film.com, Some Like it Hot earned a variety of different Oscar nominations. The only winning nomination was costume design, but even just being nominated for that many Oscars is incredible. ‘Our interest in the parallels between the adaptation inter-texts is further enhanced by consideration of their marked differences in textual form,’
The films message to viewers about gender and power is that women are meant to take care of the home and play the supportive role, while men go out to their jobs and provide. Men are strong and burly and women are naïve and domesticated. Women need men and men always come to the rescue to save women and give them a happy ending. Power is portrayed in the film both visually and through the film’s script and dialogue. The common idea that women are inferior to men is placed subtly in this movie throughout the plot and how these charac...
Also, the film revealed women empowerment and how superior they can be compared to men. While demonstrating sexual objectification, empowerment, there was also sexual exploitation of the women, shown through the film. Throughout this essay, gender based issues that were associated with the film character will be demonstrated while connecting to the real world and popular culture.

A number of popular television shows and films filling mainstream media today have taken a spin to promote women to main character roles of power and command. The traits of these female characters, however, become illusionary as plots thicken to reveal their status to be subordinate to leading male character roles; of which are typically controlling or manipulative over gender stereotypic female traits within the script. While media is being blindly applauded for their newfound glorification of women in power, there remains an underlying message of male supremacy in more than many broadcasted portrayals. Today’s mainstream television media delivers a notion that only a man can pave way for the merit of a woman.
