Deepwater Horizon (2016) directed by Peter Berg is based on a true event of the worst oil disaster in United States of America’s history when the offshore drilling rig named the Deepwater Horizon exploded. On the night of 20th April 2010, eleven offshore workers died aboard the Deepwater Horizon and the blowout lasted for 87 days, spilling an estimated of 210 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
There were numerous hazards involved and identified in the movie Deepwater Horizon. Firstly, Physical hazards. The team from Schlumberger were sent home by the BP managers, Mr Vidrine and Mr Kaluza before they could run a cement bond log test. If a similar case occurs in Malaysia, section 32 (1) of Occupational Health and Safety 1994 (Act 514) stated an employer shall notify the nearest occupational safety and health office of any accident or dangerous occurrence which has occurred at the workplace. Moreover, Occupational Safety And Health (Control Of Industrial Major Accident Hazards) Regulations 1996, Regulation 23 (Notification of major accident) indicated that a manufacturer (employer) shall notify the nearest occupational safety and health office of the accident by the quickest means available when a major accident occurs on a site and the manufacturer who makes the notification shall provide the circumstances of the accident, the hazardous substances involved, the date available for assessing the effects of the accident on persons and the environment, the emergency measures taken and a statement of the steps envisaged to alleviate medium or long term effects of the accidents, if any, and prevent the recurrence of such an accident. A manufacturer who commits an offence against any of the provisions of these Regulations provided by the Act is liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or to a term of imprisonment not exceeding 2 years or
