The British edition of Vogue is a fashion magazine that has been published since the autumn of 1916. The magazine's current editor stated that, “Vogue’s power is universally acknowledged. It’s the place everybody wants to be if they want to be in the world of fashion" and 85% of the magazine’s readers agree that “Vogue is the Fashion Bible”.[4] The magazine is considered to be one that links fashion to high society and class, teaching its readers how to ‘assume a distinctively chic and modern appearance’.[5] As a branch-off of American Vogue, British Vogue is a magazine whose success is based upon its advertising rather than its sales revenue. In 2007, it ran 2,020 pages of advertising at an average of £16,000 a page. It is deemed to be more
commercial than other editions of Vogue.[6] British Vogue is the most profitable British magazine as well as the most profitable edition of Vogue besides the US and China[7] editions.

Advertising is form of communicating and using methods into getting the buyers to purchase a product. Cosmopolitan has done a good job in determining what readers and listeners want and need. Cosmopolitan is a magazine directed toward young people who have low self- confidence and low self-esteem and also who care about health and appearance. As Fowles said, “By giving form to people’s deep-lying desires and picturing states of being that individuals privately yearn for.” (Fowles, 137). All advertisers know who and what readers wish or long for.
Cosmopolitan has many contents reviews on the cover. It is a foretaste of the magazine you are going to read. Vogue doesn’t have to reach his audience in this way, they have already their solid audience. The difference in their audiences is that the audience of Vogue is older then of Cosmopolitan. Vogue is a higher level, a next stage after Cosmopolitan. Cosmopolitan has to find new readers for these kinds of lifestyle magazines. After these people have gone through this part of life from 15 until 25 they reach a new level, where people usually have found their partners and are settling down. They are not anymore looking for parties and looking for a new partner what Cosmopolitan is trying to represent. They are now also reading other magazines such as Vogue. Vogue therefore doesn’t have to convince people anymore to buy a lifestyle magazine, they have now to convince people reading their magazine, because Vogue now representing the wishes of the audiences in this particular age. This has all to do with ideologies. The ideology is materialism represented to us, by using perfect images that people enjoy and that create an ideal of lifestyle. The ideology of Vogue is that the magazine is representing a sophisticated lifestyle. Very important is fashion, exclusivity, reaching a higher class and beauty. In Cosmopolitan the main aspects are that women have to be independent, out for fun, party, out to succeed at all costs, enjoy sex and to be successful. Using signs and symbols in the magazine represents this lifestyle. The color pink is found on every single page in Cosmopolitan. The color gold and black is mostly found in
Literature review According to Reilly (2014:22) “androgyny” is a Greek word which refers to “man and woman.” It is composed of the balance of masculine and feminine traits (Woodhill and Samuels 2004). This literature review will investigate the reasons for the androgyny in fashion and if it will continue to become a macro trend. In order to do this, the author will focus on the cultural and physiological aspects of this phenomenon both in west countries and east China.
A tall, glamorous runway model is every girl’s dream. Long beautiful legs, lean body, and beautiful shiny hair is what an average young woman views as an ideal image for a female. If you don’t resemble the images of those stunning Victoria Secret models and Fashion Week models, you suddenly become ashamed of your own body. It is a great life to have with the high pay, fame, drinking champagne on a yacht with famous celebrities and even being on the Vogue cover page. Fashion Modeling Industry has been the most influential source in our young women’s lives. Young girls and young women are seen eating as little as they can, even starving themselves at times to resemble those models. What they don’t realize is that they are contributing to the 2.7 percentage of 13- 18 year olds suffering from anorexia and bulimia. Susan Albers, a psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic said exposure to thin models is a great trigger in maintaining an eating disorder. When watching America’s Next Top Model or flipping through a Fashion magazine, these young women don’t apprehend that those models are either naturally slim or they are suffering from an eating disorder themselves, in other words, hostages in the dark hell hid behind those runway curtains. The growing number of young anorexia and bulimia patients, and the number of websites such as thinspiration, where girls put up pictures of their thin bodies clearly suggest that the fashion modeling industry do not at all bear any responsibility in providing healthy, realistic physical role models for young women.
Fashion is usually put into the same category as clothes and/or accessories. But it really is more than that. It is all about how it was made and the actual work that goes into it. Sometimes, the type of clothes you wear can help you express your inner beauty and personality.
With the growth of magazine popularity, both online and in print, youth around the world are exposed to the ideas of gender expression, identities, and roles. However, with society’s influence, the spread of heteronormative, cisgender, and white ideals have been placed as top priority. After examining men’s fashion magazine, Gentlemen Quarterly, I discovered that much of their magazine revolved around the typical wealthy, white, straight, and able-bodied male. Despite their attempts to branch out to other minority groups, they are unsuccessful in breaking out of their classic audience. GQ’s website is built to automatically draw their viewers into articles, flashing large pictures and headlines immediately into their audience’s face. Most photos
In middle school, senior year, I had made a huge decision that changed my life. I chose High School of Fashion Industries as my first choice, but I wasn’t prepared for what would happen in this school. In addition, if I go to this school, I would be alone since my friends all apply for specialized high school. I’m skeptical about should I choose Fashion High School or stay with my friends in the specialized high schools. After a deep conversation with my parents, I decide to apply for High School of Fashion Industries because I want to major in fashion. I’m sure I won’t regret this school since it was my dream to become a fashion designer and this school would get me the skills and experiences to bring my dream into reality. Therefore, I’m
Many people think fashion is just all about design or the clothing that you wear. In fact, the definition is “a popular way of dressing during a particular time or among a particular group of people” (Fashion). Well personally, I think that have got it wrong, and there are many more things about fashion that people do not realize. Consumerism and consumption play a huge role on what fashion is today and what goes into it, and not just about design or designers, but also socially and environmentally. Consumerism and consumption impact the social and environmental aspect of the fashion industry because of what people buy, why they buy things, what type of things they look for in terms of quality or brand, and also where they go to shop.
For around an expansive segment of a century, starting in the late '50s, a Greyhound transport overflowing with African-American models smoldered through four months consistently going to the United States, its cargo hold stacked down with countless of planner articles of clothing. Each day, the vehicle stopped in another city—from Hamden, Connecticut, to Itta Bena, Mississippi—and the models, joined by a jazz band that ran with them, put on a mind boggling style show for an, as it were, African-American gathering of spectators, strutting the catwalk in the most forefront outfits that engineers like Yves Saint Laurent, Emanuel Ungaro, and Christian Lacroix conveyed to the table. This was the Ebony Fashion Fair, and its coordinator, the late Eunice Walker Johnson, did perhaps more than some other individual to independent style's shading obstruction.
Magazine advertising is crucial to success. Advertisers are always looking for a distinct group to advertise to, and magazines have the advantage of knowing the demographics of their readers. Television and radio services have to guess at who is acquiring their content.
v The Vogue Magazine cover features Lea Michele wearing a pink tank top with a white miniskirt embroidered in colorful patterns.A celebrity is used to intrigue woman into reading the magazine by surrounding Lea Michele in bold text that suggests tips on looking younger and healthy. Behind her is the text “Women’s Health” in bold, pink elegant letters. She is wearing a gold bracelet, a necklace, and a gold ring on her fourth finger of her left hand. Her face appears to be glowing as she grins towards the camera with her wavy hair flowing around her. The text surrounding her are in pink and black text in contrast to the white background. On top of the magazine cover reads “Your Fast Track To A Flat Belly”.On its surface it could be a helpful magazine that gives woman a helpful insight on taking care of their body and giving exercising tips. However, it could be implying that women should only look a certain way and should look more youthful to become more desirable.
Magazines offer many opportunities for teenagers to consider and investigate their sexuality. In particular, sexuality advices and stories in magazines enables teenagers to understand personal sexual issues or problems that they might be having in a healthier light. Post-feminism attitudes have become very popular in teenage magazines for both male and female readers, this is partly because prior to the feminism movement women were never seen as having much sexual desire for men and women generally didn’t feel comfortable expressing their sexual attributes or sexuality. I will be examining three studies in this essay all by the same author ‘Sue Jackson’ involving textual analyses of problem pages, interviews with magazine staff and focus groups with readers of the magazine (“Dear Girlfriend” 286). Each article examines letters written to the advice pages of an Australasian teen magazine Girlfriend in relation to sexual desire and sexual health problems. This essay will argue how teenage magazines express the post-feminism culture and thus can contribute to safe sex messages in advice pages/letters
To begin with, I shall look at what fashion is; it is a currently popular style or practice involving clothing, footwear or accessories. It mostly refers to the current trends in looks and dressing style of a person (Cumming 234). In most cases, fashion is confusedly related to costumes; when a person talks of fashion they are seen to mean fashion in terms of textile. Fashion is seen to originate from the Western world and it is copied by other places. In this paper, we shall look at how fashion affects lifestyles and the group of people who are affected most. The paper further investigates how media is used to transmit fashion from one region to the other. Although it has been seen to affect people’s lives many people have different perspectives on fashion and dressing.
I personally think that fashion is important for most people. In this 20th century, fashion is one thing which is very needed by most people not only in Indonesia but also in abroad.
