This essay will study a passage extracted from the law code of Gortyn. It will first present briefly the law code and its provenance, before digging more deeply into the extract and especially its implications about the slavery system. The essay will make several observations, as the division of classes in Gortyn between free men and enslaved people. More specifically, it will discuss the difference that might have existed between serfs and chattel-slaves. The essay will show that slaves had obviously fewer rights than free men, but that they were also granted some protection under the law.

The studied passage indicates a clear division of classes: the free men, those excluded from political rights, the serfs and the slaves. The question of ‘serfdom’ in ancient Greece remains a disputable concept among scholars, and there is no wide consensus that serfs and slaves were clear-cut categories in Gortyn – but it quite probable that the terms were used to distinguish the ‘home-grown’ servile population from the foreign chattel-slaves. Not surprisingly, the text confirms that slaves had fewer rights than free men, but also indicates that lower-status people were granted protection under the law against the most severe abuses – in sharp contrast with slavery practices in Athens for instance. These legal provisions might be explained by the fact that the servile population was rather ‘home-grown’ than from foreign origin – and it can be argued that the development of chattel-slavery involved a progressive diminution of the rights of those who became slaves. In any case, this is a strong indication that slavery practices differ from one city-state to another, meaning that conclusions derived from the Gortyn code should not be too quickly
Throughout Aristophanes’ “Clouds” there is a constant battle between old and new. It makes itself apparent in the Just and Unjust speech as well as between father and son. Ultimately, Pheidippides, whom would be considered ‘new’, triumphs over the old Strepsiades, his father. This is analogous to the Just and Unjust speech. In this debate, Just speech represents the old traditions and mores of Greece while the contrasting Unjust speech is considered to be newfangled and cynical towards the old. While the defeat of Just speech by Unjust speech does not render Pheidippides the ability to overcome Strepsiades, it is a parallel that may be compared with many other instances in Mythology and real life.

The social structure of Sparta consisted of the Helots, Perioikoi and Spartiates. Enslaved in the wars of Messenia were the Helots, considered as the property of the state, and released on rare occasion as Neodamodeis ’new citizens’. Tyrtaeus’ compares the enslaved Helots to ’donkeys worn down by heavy loads’, a downtrodden minority group with no great power. However, Thucydides accounts for their de-facto influence in Spartan administration, with ’most of their decisions with a view to precautions against the Helots. Finley supports this assessment, identifying certain advantages Helots held over other slave groups in this era. The basic rights of the Helots included the right to their own possessions; the ability to retain a percentage of their crop; and ’in general, all the normal human institutions except their freedom’. In comparison to other slaves that are discussed over time, Olaudah Equiano truly does lead an ‘interesting’ life. While his time as a slave was very poor there are certainly other slaves that he mentions that received far more damaging treatment than he did. In turn this inspires him to fight for the abolishment of slavery. By pointing out both negative and positive events that occurred, the treatment he received from all of his masters, the impact that religion had on his life and how abolishing slavery could benefit the future of everyone as a whole; Equiano develops a compelling argument that does help aid the battle against slavery. Sonia Sabnis article, “Lucian’s Lychnopolis and the Problems of Slave Surveillance” explores the connection to slavery found in the Lychnopolis scene of Lucian’s True Histories. The article builds on Sabnis’ main points: that lamps are a symbol for slaves, that lamps and slaves are witnesses to their master’s private affairs, and that the freedom allowed to the lamps in Lychnopolis means they can express their own morals. One of the most famous works on the topic of slavery is the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Fredrick Douglass. Written in 1845, this work has not lost its relevance. In fact, many modern scholars are trying to find something new and interesting in this work, in particular with respect to modern realities. I have found a few articles, each of which is addressing a particular aspect of this work. The value of the articles is the fact that they give me a great opportunity to understand not only this work, but also the writer's position as a whole. Sometime around 750-600 B.C.E., the Greek poet Hesiod produced what is generally thought to be the oldest surviving Greek poetic works. During this time, Greece was near the middle of its Archaic period, a period of technological, social, political, and cultural innovations. This was the period in which the first true alphabet system arose, the system which allowed Hesiod and other poets like him to record permanently the oral stories and lyrics so important to Greek culture. This was also the time in which the Greek polis emerged – what is today translated as “city-state” – as a result of increases in population size. Hand in hand with the increase in population and formation of political bodies like the polis comes the colonization of foreign land which marked this period. Colonies arose all around the Aegean Sea and onto the coast of North Africa, spreading the Greek culture well beyond its homeland (Earth 128-131).
We have now examined Thucydides' strongest arguments for Athenian rule. It is clear that Athens had a stronger claim to rule than the Melians had to remain sovereign. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the ancient law codes such as the Precepts of Ptah-Hotep and Hammurabi’s code, the different gods each civilization found important, the position of power Pharaoh’s held, the differences between Athens and Sparta, and the use of murder for political matters in the Roman republic. One of my favorite topics we discussed was about the earliest humans. It was interesting to learn about the different types of early humans and what separated them from each other. I had never learned about the early humans before this history class, let alone spent an entire lesson on them. I thought it was exciting to learn so much important information.
